Friends Association Receives Shoes For Children In Need By Francine Fulton

Phoenixville Public Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville, will host a special presentation, “Before the Dragon Woke: Photos From China’s Cultural Revolution and Opening to the West,” on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Nelson Kardos will be the speaker. From 1976 to 2003, Kardos, now a pharmacist, worked in China as a biochemical engineer. While there, he took many photos, often in restricted locations. Kardos will share some of these photos, which will include scenes from the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Kardos hails from Philadelphia. The event is free and open to the public. Max’s Kicks for Kids (MK4K), a new nonprofit organization that formed to provide new back-to-school shoes for children in need in Chester County, recently made its first donation of 32 pairs of shoes to the Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children. The Friends Association distributed the shoes to children whose parents are served by the association, which provides an emergency family shelter, homelessness prevention programs, outreach to homeless families and a housing stability program. MK4K was founded by Lynn and Tom Engle in July of this year in honor of their son, Max, who passed away in 2018. Max was the first male probation officer in Chester County’s WRAP (Women’s Reentry Assessment & Programming) Initiative. In this role, he See Shoes pg 3

One of ways that grieving families can find comfort after a heartbreaking loss is to focus their energies on keeping the memories of their loved one alive through positive efforts to benefit the community. Max’s Kicks for Kids (MK4K), a new organization that provides back-toschool shoes for children in need, is named for Max Engle, a Chester County probation officer who passed away in September 2018. MK4K was founded by president Tom Engle, Max’s father; vice president Lynn Engle, Max’s mother; and secretary Claire Engle, Max’s sister. People without a high school diploma pursuing their High School Equivalency credential now have two testing options to choose from. Students may take the General Educational Development (GED) exam or the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet). Locally, both exams are offered by
the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) at the OIC testing center located in the CareerLink building, 479 Thomas Jones Way, Suite 500, Exton. Charity Sets Virtual 5K Scholars’ Promise International Education Foundation, an online educational institution that provides educational opportunites to international high school students, is offering an alternative way for runners and walkers to complete in a 5K through the “5K Your Way Turkey Trot,” which will allow participants to run, walk, bike or
even row the kilometers on any day of the week from Sunday, Nov. 24, through Sunday, Dec. 1. Because the event is a virtual 5K, participants can decide whether they run or walk - indoors or outdoors - and what time of day they participate. Tel Hai Camp invites local residents to “burn calories, not your turkey” during the annual Turkey Bowl to be held on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. The event will feature a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run for children. “This is our 28th year for the race, and we are looking forward to another great year,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. The 5K (3.1-mile) cross-country race will take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths.
