OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors. “Most of the need is for ESL (English as a Second Language) students, who want to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills,”
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training with the Pennsylvania Department of Education,” Rikess pointed out. “(Volunteers) can take (the course) within a month of starting tutoring.
