Students Plant Tulips During Red Ribbon Week By Francine Fulton

BENEFIT RACE

As part of the Plant the Promise initiative, students and adult volunteers at Downingtown High School West (DHSW) recently planted red tulip bulbs in front of the school building. The bulbs, which will bloom this spring, will serve as a reminder of the importance of living a drug-free life. Plant the Promise, held for the first time in the Downingtown Area School District (DASD), was part of DHSW’s observance of Red Ribbon Week, a national drug and violence prevention awareness campaign that was recognized from Oct. 23 to 31 this year. In addition to DHSW, tulip bulbs were scheduled to be planted at Downingtown High School East (DHSE), the Downingtown STEM Academy and the DASD administration building. The Plant the Promise program was

spearheaded locally by Downingtown Communities That Care (CTC), which was responsible for ordering the tulip bulbs and making them available to local churches, schools and community organizations. According to www.redribbon.org, the Red Ribbon campaign started in 1985 when Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a DEA agent, lost his life while working to uncover the identities of members of an illegal drug cartel. In 1986, the Red Ribbon celebration was created in honor of Camarena and people were encouraged to wear a red ribbon to show their commitment to fight illegal drug use. Today, it is estimated that more than 80 million youths and adults participate in Red Ribbon Week each year. At DHSW, the volunteers planted 400 red tulip bulbs in a flower bed located in front of the school building near a sign that reads “Drunk Drivers See Tulips pg 7
