Church To Present AngelFest Fair

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Exton will present its annual AngelFest Fair on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19.

The event will feature live and silent auctions, food and the opportunity to shop in various rooms - each with a different theme.

The event will begin with a preview party on Oct. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Guests will be able to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages, as well as a live auction.

Live auction items will include a oneweek stay at a villa in Tuscany, Italy, for 20 guests; a week’s stay at The Estates in Williamsburg, Va.; a hot air balloon ride; a stay at The General Warren Inn; a Japanese massage chair valued at $5,800; a garden plot rental at St. Paul’s Community Garden; and watercolors by artist Jane Choc, a member of St. Paul’s.

Also open to guests of the preview party will be the various shopping areas, including the Boutique, which will feature jewelry, designer handbags and accessories; the Holiday Room, which will offer seasonal decorations; and Grandma’s Attic.

Trinity AG To Host Free Family Event

Trinity Assembly of God (AG) will present a free Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center, a nonprofit community center located at 501 E. Miner St., West Chester. The event will include a rock wall and children’s games, a costume contest, inflatables, free food and candy.

This is the second year that Trinity AG has held the event at the nearby West Chester center. SALT Performing Arts will present the musical “Mamma Mia!” at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Performances will be held on Fridays, Oct. 18 and 25 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; on Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; and on Sundays, Oct. 20 and 27, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

The musical, which features more than 20 songs from the 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA, was written by playwright Catherine Johnson. The play is set on a small Greek island, and tells the story of Sophie, a bride-to-be trying to find her real father to walk her down the aisle. Since her mother, Donna, the lead singer of the 1970s group Donna and the Dynamos, will not talk about the past, Sophie reads her mother’s old diaries, learns of three men from Donna’s past who could be Sophie’s father and invites them to wedding. This results in complications that might jeopardize the wedding and brings back a lot of memories for Donna of both love and heartbreak.

Local Author To Speak About New Book Author Bruce Mowday is scheduled to be interviewed by Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) on his new book, “Stealing Wyeth.” The book will be featured on the “PA Books” show. The “Stealing Wyeth” interview is scheduled to be aired in December. PCN previously did a show on Mowday’s other true crime book, “Jailing the Johnston Gang.”

“Stealing Wyeth” was released in August by Barricade Books and already is in its third printing. The book details the theft of 15 paintings from the Chadds Ford estate of famed artist Andrew Wyeth and the law enforcement efforts to recover those paintings.

A public book reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Kennett Square Inn beginning from 6:30 p.m.

Additional talks and signings scheduled for “Stealing Wyeth” include an event on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Traditions at Longwood, Kennett Square, and several library talks, which will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Oxford, beginning at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Paoli, beginning at 6:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Oct. 24, in Tredyffrin, beginning at 7 p.m.

“We are trying to do something for the community to let them know we love them,” he added.

A highlight of the evening will be a 50-foot rock wall for children to climb.

“We will also have three inflatables - a moon bounce, an obstacle course and a giant slide,” said Dunaway. “We will have lots of carnival-style games where the kids can win tickets. We will have a prize table where they can trade in their tickets for candy and prizes.” Free beverages and snacks, including cotton candy, hot dogs and popcorn, will be provided.

The Fall Festival will include a Halloween costume contest at about 6:30 p.m. Prizes for the best overall costumes will be awarded that evening to one girl and one boy.

The event will be held outdoors. In the case of rain, activities will take place in the center’s indoor gymnasium. “We have 50 volunteers from the church (helping out at the Fall Festival), and a club from West Chester University is sending six volunteers,” Dunaway said, noting that church volunteers dressed in superhero costumes will also be on hand to greet children.

During the Fall Festival there will be an opportunity for families to earn a prize as part of a “Guess How Many Candies Are in the Jar” contest. The winner of the contest will be awarded a prize on Sunday, Oct. 20, which has also been designed as Character Sunday at Trinity AG. “We will have two separate services at 10 a.m. - one for kids and one for adults,” Dunaway explained. “On Character Sunday, kids can dress up as their favorite superheroes or princesses or video game characters.” As part of the morning’s events, special activities will be offered for children, including a laser maze obstacle course.

The Fall Festival and Character Sunday are just two of the latest activities that the church is offering as part of its active community outreach program. In November, the church will hold a turkey distribution at the Melton Center in time for

Foundation Distributes Grants The Brandywine Health Foundation recently distributed 36 grants totaling $322,340. This brings the foundation’s total giving since it began awarding grants and scholarships in 2002 to more than $18 million.

Coatesville Hosts Vintage, Historic Car Race

During the Trunk or Treat event at Windsor Christian Preschool on Oct. 19, children will be able to trick-or-treat at cars that will be decorated for the occasion.

Windsor Christian Preschool will host its seventh annual Trunk or Treat event on the grounds of Windsor Baptist Church, 213 Little Conestoga Road, Downingtown, on Saturday, Oct 19. The event welcomes all children and will feature vehicle trunks decorated in various themes. Children will be able to visit each trunk to receive candy treats, including nonedible options for those with dietary restrictions.

Also featured will be a moon bounce, free hot dogs, chips and apple cider.

Trunk or Treat will take place rain or shine.

Windsor Christian Preschool sponsors the Trunk or Treat event in partnership with Windsor Christian Academy; both are ministries of Windsor Baptist

Church. The event promises to provide a safe and fun venue for children to enjoy the festivities of dressing up and trick-or-treating.

The fourth annual Coatesville Invitational Vintage Grand Prix took place on Sept. 21, drawing the largest crowd in the history of the event. Thousands of people lined the streets of Coatesville to watch 50 vintage and historic race cars and motorcycles charge through the city streets. Organizers report that

the event is one of the only remaining motor sport events in America driven directly through city streets.

Drivers and riders of vintage race cars and motorcycles dating from 1900 to 1970 competed in a staggered-start, individually timed event over a challenging 2.2-mile road course, complete with old-style hay bale chicanes. The course wound through the streets of Coatesville, including a portion that featured the start/finish line and a five-block-long stretch on the original Lincoln Highway, the oldest highway in America.

Marcia Barker of Boonton, N.J., was named overall event winner and awarded the 2019 Brian Hoskins Trophy. Barker, who drove a 1928 Ford Roadster, is the first woman to capture the overall award.

Trophies were also awarded for best overall performance in each of the timed groups: 1900 to 1950 open wheel race cars, David Jacobs Jr.; 1930 to 1970 two- to four-cylinder race cars, David Baker; 1930 to 1970 three- to sixcylinder race cars, Wayne Fleigler; 1930 to 1970 four- to eight-cylinder race cars, Brandon Badell; and 1930 to 1970 racing motorcycles, Bill Knox.

“We will have kids’ crafts and yard games like ring toss.”

Kusuma Sachs, a Svaroopa Yoga teacher/trainer, feels “grateful to be in the presence of such a remarkable teacher.” “I appreciate what she, as a guru, offers,” said Sachs. “She guides me forward, respecting my individual pace. As the Ashram celebrates its 10th birthday, I am grateful for all the gifts I have received. My life has opened to an unforeseen level of growth, awareness, self-reflection and understanding.”

In honor of SVA’s 10th birthday, a new CD, “Spiritual Hunger & Fulfillment,” has been released. The music tracks Swami Nirmalananda’s own journey, beginning with the yearning that led her to the teaching andcontinuing to the fulfillment made available by her own guru.

Library Holds Appreciation Event pg 10

In 2017, Woodcrest Retreat added a Kids Camp Bonanza, complete with camp-style activities for children, during its annual benefit auction. The activities, which feature a variety of stations, such as crafts, a nature lesson, and camp games, proved so popular, Woodcrest made them a regular part of the event. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bonanza will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include regularly scheduled activities from 9 to 11 a.m. and carnival games for a nominal fee from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auction, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, will begin at 9 a.m. with an assortment of donated items going up for bids. Among these will be household items, home dĂŠcor, fall plants, tools, and gift certificates. Large items and specialty items

will be sold at 10:30 a.m. Homemade bread will be sold at 10:30 a.m. as well.

Baked goods made by children who attend the fair may be entered to win a cash prize. Children may enter a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. to be judged and then auctioned at 11:30 a.m. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry.

Gift certificates will be auctioned at 2 p.m., and remaining food will be auctioned at 3 p.m.

Kids Camp Bonanza activities will include a chance to try a sling shot, archery, wood burning, rocket launching, and more. A doughnut-eating contest will be held at 11 a.m. A nominal fee will be charged to ride the barrel train. A bounce house will be on-site throughout the event.

Church Supports Pantry Backpack Program Honey Brook Presbyterian Church (HBPC) recently showed its support of the Honey Brook Food Pantryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backpack Program, which provides backpacks full of nonperishable food items to students in need during the school year.

The potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shop was reorganized this year, and Bob stocked the shelves with examples from his collection.

There are shelves of crocks, jugs, vases, and inkwells, and there are even two shelves full of bundt pans and similar ring-shaped baking dishes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the way everybody solved their problems a different way,â&#x20AC;? Bob said, commenting on the variations in design.

In contrast to the practical items, Bob also has a shelf of ring vases that are adaptations of designs spotted in places like the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve turned them into story pots,â&#x20AC;? Bob said. Pointing to a cheerful songbird, he added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This bird is a 3-D interpretation of (one from) a fraktur.â&#x20AC;?

Redware production was relatively low-tech, and a farmer could work part time to produce the necessary vessels.

Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is moving into a new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, and executive director Stacy Emminger said with a smile, â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my mind, I see us already outgrowing this place, too.â&#x20AC;?

That is the kind of big vision that Emminger has for DSAA. Emmingerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 2014.

She and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities.

A broad range of Pennsylvania German textiles, including quilts, samplers, hand towels, bed linens, clothing, pincushions, and more, will be discussed at an upcoming lecture titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cloth Is My Field, Needle Is My Plow: Pennsylvania German Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Work.â&#x20AC;? This talk will be presented by Lisa Minardi, executive director of the Speakerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House and the new Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in Trappe, Pa. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. at the Steinman College Center at Franklin & Marshall College.

Minardiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation will be followed by a behind-the-scenes look at show towels and samplers from the Phillips Museum of Artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection.

Attendees will have a unique opportunity to see textiles that are rarely on display and pulled from storage just for this special program.

This talk coincides with the current exhibit, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stitched Stories: Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Narratives in Regional Textiles,â&#x20AC;? running through Friday, Dec. 6, in Gibson Gallery at F&Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Phillips Museum of Art. Keep your eyes on the night sky, and you just might catch a glimpse of a friendly, flying witch making her way to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center to attend the Witches Fly North Antique and Artisan Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Lebanon, Pa. For 13 years, this event has showcased the best in early antiques, vintage wares, primitives, industrial, salvage and artistically created jewelry, clothing and more.

It gets better with each passing year, and Witches Fly North 2019 is sure to please all attendees again.

This fall show is hosted by Miss Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Milkweed Antiques.

Owners Diane Gibble and Troy Tranquillo have watched this event grow from a small backyard casual event to a bustling, busy venue full of vendors and shoppers sporting witch hats and capes. But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the hat fool you, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all in fun and a great way to bring both vendors and shoppers together for a busy two days of selling and picking.

The show has grown in leaps and bounds each year, creating the need for bigger and better venues.

If you thought last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event held at the Tulpehocken Manor couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be better, think again. The Lebanon Valley Expo Center wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappoint, with plenty of climate-controlled space indoors, as well as covered, open air space outside.

Since the show must go on, rain or shine, this venue will keep vendors and customers comfortable and provide plenty of parking.

Although every talented vendor contributes to the spirited atmosphere of the show, hosts Gibble and Tranquillo are excited to introduce several new vendors this year.

DHSE To Stage “Almost, Maine”

Downingtown East Theatre will present “Almost, Maine” in the Downingtown High School East (DHSE) auditorium, 50 Devon Drive, Exton, on Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 17 to 19, at 7 p.m.

The show, composed of nine short vignettes, explores love and loss in a remote, mythical town Almost, Maine, which the playwright, John Cariani, stated, “doesn’t quite exist.” The action takes place on one cold midwinter night.

instructor Zach Brown, show producer, said that the play is popular among high school theater departments. “‘Almost, Maine,’ according to NPR’s and the Educational Theatre Association’s polling, is the most popular fulllength play to be produced by the nation’s high schools for the last 11 years,” he stated. “High schools and community theater love it because of its low-tech nature and ability to be produced by casts of flexible sizes. It was actually written to be performed only with four people, but the playwright has granted permission to bump that size up to as many as 20

people. Our production has 10 actors.”

Downingtown East Theatre performs two plays each school year: the fall show and a spring production. Brown said the upcoming performance showcases the students’ theatrical talents.

“We wanted to perform a piece that focused on the students’ acting abilities in its collection of nine vignettes that make up the show,” Brown explained. “The piece is very funny and equally sentimental, so it allows our students to have a good variety to their performing experiences this school year.”

Brown said that the cast had to master playing different roles in the play. “The challenges come in the fact that a number of the actors play multiple roles, sometimes even with the same ‘scene partner’ on stage,” he explained.

“They’re really pressed to create distinct, yet real, characters so that the audience doesn’t feel like they’re watching the same actor or character on the stage more than once. We also had to find a way to present the dense woods of northern Maine on our stage with a limited budget; it’s amazing what can be accomplished with a thoughtful lighting design.

Still, this show is all about the actors.”

Brown announced that the spring 2020 show at DHSE will be “Chicago,” which is a sharp contract to the fall play. “With the spectacle of ‘Chicago’ coming up for us in April, we wanted to strip away all of that glitz and glamour and tell a story that’s a little quieter and a little more hu-

Instead of using chemicals to control weeds, there are number of outfits in Chester County that will provide goats. They can eat poison sumac and poison ivy and it doesn’t affect them. All of the electric cars will be outside, too.”

Attendees will be able to visit the booths and get free samples and giveaways. “We will have local producers of honey and a landscaping firm that comes out and they will teach (homeowners how to) work with native plants versus foreign invasive (species),” Bazil noted. “You wander around freely and check them out and network with other people. Bartlett gives away saplings, and PECO comes out and gives away LED lightbulbs (and other free items).”

The Arc Sets Trunk Or Treat Event The Arc of Chester County will host its second annual Trunk or Treat event on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the West Chester facility, located at 900 Lawrence Drive.

The free event will transform The Arc’s campus into a Halloween destination. Costumes are encouraged.

Cars will be decorated for the occasion, and children may make the rounds, collecting complimentary goodies from the trunks. “This area of Chester County is very green,” Bazil remarked. “A lot of people have solar panels on their houses, and they are into recycling and repurposing. We promote the event in local schools, so we get a lot of families. “(The fair is) educational,” he added. “There are a lot of ways to minimize our impact on the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.”

This year, the Sustainability Fair will be included as a stop on the 2019 National Solar Tour/Chester County Clean Energy Tour. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 19, tourgoers are invited to tour participating homes, businesses, nonprofit organizations, municipal buildings, places of worship, schools and other sites that utilize green technology such as solar, wind and geothermal power. “This year, (the tour) happened to coincide with the day of our event,” Bazil noted.
