CHICKEN BARBECUE

will hold its fourth annual chicken barbecue dinner fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 12. The chickens will be grilled on the new fire pit built by two of the troop’s leaders at Cornerstone Fellowship Church, the chartering organization of Troop 51. The leader-grilled dinners will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, corn, a roll and butter, and dessert for a set fee. Pickup for the takeout dinners will be at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church, 101 Kylies Road, Wagontown, between 3 and 5 p.m. To obtain tickets for the chicken barbecue, contact the Scouts at troop51wagontown@gmail.com. Customers should bring their tickets when picking up the dinners. The funds raised will be used to defray the cost of running Troop 51.

St. Francis of Assisi, who was born in Italy in the 12th century and is the founder of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church, is well-known for his love of animals and nature. Today, churches and other organizations worldwide honor his legacy by holding Blessing of the Animals events on or near the Feast of St. Francis on Oct. 4.

Locally, several churches have scheduled Blessing of the Animals events, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1105 E. Lincoln Highway, Exton. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. Each animal will receive an individual blessing and a blessing certificate. Treats will be available for all of the pets.

Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works will present its annual Hay Creek Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature traditional foods, seasonal handson activities for children, tours of the historic iron-making complex, a large flea market and more. The two-day event will open each day with an apple pancake and sausage breakfast served from 7 to 11 a.m.

A Beekeeper 101 program will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m. at Bondsville Mill Park, 1647 Bondsville Mill Road, Downingtown.

The program will give an overview of the art and science of beekeeping and what it takes to get into beekeeping and what beekeeping entails. It will help attendees to assess if they think they would like to learn more about beekeeping. The program will also present information about how people can help bees without becoming a beekeeper. Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th Ave., Coatesville, will hold a Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. Community members are invited to bring their pets to the event, which will take place in the church’s back parking lot.

After a short service, each animal will receive an individual prayer of blessing. Light refreshments for people and pets will be provided. All dogs, as well as any larger animals, must be on leashes, and cats and other small animals should be in travel carriers.

Police Organization Marks 75 Years The Chester County Fraternal community involvement and Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 11 employee representation.

The Fraternal Order of Police recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. State Sen. Andy is known as the world’s largest Dinniman was on hand at the Chester County FOP Lodge 11 picnic to present FOP president Steve Plaugher with an official Senate citation in honor of the milestone anniversary.

The Chester County FOP Lodge 11 represents more than 800 active and retired law enforcement officers from more than 50 police departments in Chester County. State Rep. Dan Williams recently announced that the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County received extended funding from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Office of Victims’ Services.

Based in Coatesville, the center will again be allocated $204,022 for the period of Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, through Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, after the Victims’ Services Advisory Committee voted recently to extend grants under Victims of Crime Act funding.

The funding will help the Domestic Violence Center provide services to survivors of domestic violence, including their children.

Victims of Crime Act funding supports local government and community-based victim services. It is financed by fines and penalties paid by convicted federal offenders and not from tax dollars. The grants are distributed in Pennsylvania through a PCCD committee.

Customers Donate Funds For Food Banks In recognition of National Hunger Action Month in September, Giant Food Stores announced that its customers raised $780,676 to support local hunger relief efforts during the biannual Bag Hunger campaign.

The company’s Bag Hunger campaign ran from Aug. 25 through Sept. 7 across all Giant and Martin’s stores.

According to Feeding America, each dollar raised helps to

provide at least 10 meals, meaning that the funds raised during Giant’s Bag Hunger campaign will fund more than 7.8 million meals. Funds raised during the campaign go to more than 100 hunger-relief partners, including food pantries across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines, 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown, will host its 29th annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. A short nondenominational service will be held at 1 p.m. in the main barn, followed by individual blessings for all animals in attendance.

Members of the community are welcome to bring their cats, dogs and other small pets to the blessing. All animals must be supervised and in crates or on a leash. While the majority of animals brought to the event are cats and dogs, other pets are welcome. “It is mostly dogs, but people bring goats, bunnies, guinea pigs, ducks, parrots and lizards,� said Joelle Temoyan, Ryerss’ administrative manager.

She noted that pastor Will Humes from Coventryville United Methodist Church will provide the blessing.

Visitors will also be able to spend time with the more than 80 horses that reside at Ryerss Farm both before and after the service. Lunch, including hot dogs and cold beverages, will be available for purchase.

Hayrides will also be offered, weather permitting.

The Ryerss gift shop will be open throughout the afternoon, offering many horse-related items. All proceeds will go directly to help with the care of the rescued and retired horses.

Zerr explained that in the early days of the Joanna Furnace community, apples were an important source of food all year long.

Many varieties could keep for months. “They preserved apples in the winter, and they also used apples to make apple butter,” said Zerr. “(Making apple butter) was a 16-hour process and when the apples were cooked, they put them into a crock and stored that in their root cellars.”

Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell recently approved a resolution calling for the formation of a countywide 2020 census Complete Count Committee (CCC) to encourage all residents’ participation in the census survey. The commissioners’ approval was given on Sept. 12.

The CCC is a group of volunteers who will, at the local level, develop and implement a 2020 census awareness campaign based upon their knowledge of the local community. The CCC consists of government and community leaders from education, business, health care and other community organizations.

According to commissioners chair Michelle Kichline, census data impacts grant programs that are federally funded and population-based, government and business planning and state and federal legislative districts, which are population-based. The county’s 2019 adopted budget includes $190.2 million in federal and state grants, which represent 40 percent of Chester County’s $476 million operating budget.

Approximately 522,000 people currently live in Chester County, according to 2018 census data.

This grew from the 2010 census count of 498,886 residents in Chester County. The county’s population is expected to increase 30 percent over the next 30 years.

Census Day is Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Every household will have the option to respond to the short survey online, by mail, or by phone. By law, the Census Bureau must keep all responses confidential and is not permitted to share answers with any other government agency. The U.S. Constitution has required a decennial census since 1790.

The funds are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits and will be used by Community Warehouse Project to continue providing its furniture “upcycle” service to county families and individuals.

Community Warehouse Project of Chester County collects and redistributes donated furniture and other household items to individuals and families in need within the area. It is a typically one-time, free service to pre-screened recipients, supported through the contributions of Chester County residents and businesses. Volunteers

help with the collection and distribution of items. Community Warehouse Project also works with local social service agencies to identify those who would greatly benefit from furniture donations.

Farrell noted that Community Warehouse Project complements Chester County’s Decade to Doorways initiative, which has a mission of ending chronic homelessness in the county.

VA is using a community-driven approach to prevent suicide and finding innovative ways to deliver support and care to all 20 million U.S. veterans whenever and wherever they need it.

Everyone can play a role by learning to recognize warning signs, showing compassion and care to veterans in need, and offering support. Community members are encouraged to reach out to those who might need some support by sending a check-in text, cooking them dinner, or simply asking, “How are you?” They may also educate themselves on the warning signs of suicide, found at www.veteranscrisisline.net/ education/signs-of-crisis. A free training video is available at https://psycharmor.org/courses/ s-a-v-e/ to equip viewers to respond with care and compassion if someone indicates they are having thoughts of suicide.
