The Norseman, a 40-foot Viking ship replica, will sail on Marsh Creek Lake.

While people may be accustomed to seeing fishing boats or sailboats on the lake at Marsh Creek State Park in Eagle, a different kind of vessel will take to the water on Sunday, Oct. 10 - a 40-foot Viking ship replica named the Norseman.

The ship will be launched by members of Leif Ericson Viking Ship Inc. (LEVS), a nonprofit organization whose goal is to educate people about Leif Ericson and the Viking people, as well as to re-create the experience of traveling on water as the Vikings did 1,000 years ago.

Celebrating 50 Years As A Church

BY FRANCINE FULTON In 1971, the Rev. William Sanders began searching for a plot of land where he could establish a church in Chester County. This year, Trinity Assembly of God (AG) is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Trinity AG will present a 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday, Oct. 3, from noon to 4 p.m.

Included will be food, music, children’s games and a dunk tank. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

“We will have a pig roast, and several local bakeries will make all sorts of goodies,” said pastor Jimmy Smuda. “There will be horse and buggy rides around the church property, a cornhole tournament, a rock wall and bounce houses. We want people to get to know us as a church and celebrate, and everything will be free.”

According to a written history provided by the church, members of Trinity AG first began meeting at the YMCA in West Chester. The first service was held on Feb 7, 1971, with 24 people in attendance.

Soon after, 5 acres of land was purchased on North Pottstown Pike just outside Exton, where the first chapel was constructed and dedicated in October 1971. The church grew, and a new sanctuary was added to the building in February 1975. The church officially became affiliated with the Assemblies of God in 1976 and incorporated in 1977 in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The community is also invited to attend the 10 a.m. worship service on Oct. 3 in the church sanctuary prior to the celebration. “We will have a service with pastor Steve Torville, who pastored here for 15 years,” Smuda said. “He was the pastor when our addition (was built) and saw the biggest amount of growth here in the mid-’90s.”

Smuda, who resides in Exton, was named pastor in August of 2012. Under his guidance, the church is dedicated to serving the community through various outreach programs. The chuch also currently supports more than 60 missionaries on a monthly basis both locally and abroad.

“Pastor Sanders was praying about a place (where) he knew God wanted him to open a church. He didn’t know anybody and did not have any connections,” said Smuda. “After (the church) began meeting at the YMCA, he made connections, started services and prayer meetings and a children’s ministry. (Eventually), he was able to buy the land. There have been additions, but this (property) has been our home for the last 50 years.”

Aging Gracefully

BY FRANCINE FULTON If you have reading glasses in nearly every room in the house, if you can’t make it through an entire movie on the couch without falling asleep and if you are in are in bed by 10 p.m. each night, it can mean only one thing. It means you are getting older.

A Catholic school nun once told me, “Getting old is not for the faint-hearted,” and she was right. For many of us over 50, the aches and pains of getting older are most unwelcome. While it is not true of everyone, most of us have a bum knee (or shoulder or elbow). We also can’t eat the same foods anymore or stay up to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. Sometimes we even forget why we walked into a room or why we opened a drawer or cabinet.

Other signs that a person is getting older: We pay with cash.

We mail in checks to pay our bills. We use our cellphones only to make phone calls. We talk about the “way things used to be.” Sometimes it takes us just a little bit longer to get out of a chair or off the couch.

We sometimes don’t understand what younger people are talking about, especially with all

the weird social media abbreviations. We do not tweet, and we are not on TikTok. When there are television commercials for award shows, like the MTV Music Awards, we have no idea who any of the artists are. All our favorite songs can now be heard on the oldies station.

Finding the car in a large parking lot can be quite daunting. We buy Christmas and/or birthday presents early and then can’t remember where we hid them.

We used to be able to pluck a gray hair or two that might appear on our heads, but now that has become a losing battle. On a personal note, if napping were an Olympic sport, I would have gold medal.

Plus, everyone seems to be younger than us - co-workers, the cable guy, hair stylists, mechanics and even doctors and dentists.

But growing older does have its positives as well. As the saying goes, “With age comes wisdom.”

Living does teach us many important lessons, such as cherishing every moment that we have with family and friends. Experience also teaches us not obsess over things we cannot change and not to sweat the small stuff.

We are also less impulsive, we have the ability to laugh at ourselves and life’s bad experiences have made us stronger.

Growing older also means trying to find a little piece of joy in every day, whether it be watching a silly sitcom on TV, having a hot cup of tea with sugar and extra cream or buying a candy bowl shaped like a duck for the coffee table.

Those of us who are entering the second phase of our lives have many new and exciting adventures to look forward to, including retirement, travel and welcoming new additions to the family. It will be interesting to see what life will bring us as we grow older, and we will be able to experience it all - as long as it happens before 10 p.m.
