Downingtown Family Opens Little Free Library By Francine Fulton

Hoping to share their love of reading with people young and old, members of the Spidel family of Downingtown recently opened a Little Free Library in their front yard to offer books to neighbors, friends and the community. According to www.littlefree library.org, the Little Free Library program is a free book exchange that invites readers to “take a book or return a book.” Each Little Free Library is a book-sharing box that is weatherproof and contains shelves to hold the books. Those who construct the boxes and register them, called stewards, receive an official charter sign, which is placed on the box. Locations of registered free libraries nationwide can be found on a map at the website. Meredith Spidel explained that her

family became familiar with Little Free Libraries while on vacation at the New Jersey shore. “We took to the idea the first week of summer vacation when visiting a Little Free Library at the beach in Cape May. There is one there that we always visit,” she said. “We then got a game plan in order and worked hard at making it happen. “It was truly a family effort,” she continued. “My husband built the library, the kids held a lemonade stand to raise funds for the materials and the registration fee and we all gathered books from our stash and from friends.” Family members, along with neighbors and friends, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 1 to officially open the library, which is fastened onto a large tree in front of their home. Spidel said that the library contains See Little Free Library pg 2
