Annual Event To Drive Out Hunger Car Show To Support Chester County Food Bank

The Top Dead Center (TDC) Motor Club will host its annual Drive Out Hunger Car Show and Food Drive to benefit the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Downingtown High School

East, 50 Devon Drive, Exton. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 15.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the show, which is being held for the first time on a Sunday. Another change this year is the event’s hours. Previously held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the show adjusted its hours to extend into the afternoon.

Emergency Services Department Brandywine Valley Ski Association To Hold Open House To Offer CERT Course

When local emergencies occur, first responders can be overwhelmed with the number of people in need of help. There is now an opportunity for community members to receive the training they need to help themselves and others during times of crisis.

The Chester County Department of Emergency Services will offer a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course this fall at the Public Safety Training Campus, 137 Modena Road, Coatesville. This class is open to anyone who wants to learn how to be better prepared before, during and after an emergency.

Shoppers will be able to choose from more than 500 fiction and nonfiction titles for adults in hardback and paperback versions, as well as more than 100 books children’s books. Books, which are nominally priced, will be replenished each Sunday.

Visitors are welcome to attend the church’s Sunday service, which begins at 10 a.m., and then browse through the books during the church’s coffee hour from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.

Man to Man, the men’s ministry group at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC), 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown, will host its annual Car Show and Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Car show registration and admission for spectators will be free.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to preregister by visiting www.hopewellumc .org/2019-car-show-sign-up. Same-day registration will open at 9 a.m. The rain date for the event is Saturday, Sept. 14.

This is the 11th annual car show at the church but the second year that the Community Day was added as part of an effort to attract car enthusiasts as well as local families. Free activities for children will include a climbing wall and a bounce house. A disc jockey will play ’50s, ’60s and ’70s music.

There will also be a dunk tank on-site.

“We have people lined up for the dunk tank, including most of the pastors, myself included,” said Dan Hepner, Hopewell UMC pastor of Discipleship Ministries.

A Rita’s Italian Ice truck will offer treats for sale, and Hopewell UMC will offer nominally priced food, including barbecue chicken. All proceeds will benefit youth scholarships that are awarded to high school seniors who attend Hopewell UMC as they make their transition into higher education.

Also on display will be fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles. People will be able to visit with the firefighters, police officers and other first responders

million children by promoting literacy in developing countries since 2000 by building libraries, publishing children’s books in local languages and building schools. The funds raised by St. Peter’s have supported Room to Read’s projects, including the building of a library in Nepal in 2009.

Room to Read also established a Girls’ Education Program, which provides girls of secondary age with formal education, teaches life skills and helps prepare the girls for adulthood. The church’s book sale will directly benefit the Girls’ Education Program.

It costs $300 a year to send a girl to secondary school in the 10 countries where Room to Read is located. Last year, the church sponsored 18 girls. The church’s goal this year is to send at least 19 girls to school.

“We expect to have 75 to 100 vehicles this year,” Hepner noted.

Six trophies will be awarded in various categories, such as Best Car Overall, Best Work in Progress and Best in Show voted on by the vehicle owners. “Judges’ Choice” will be the top prize trophy. “The men’s ministry votes on the best car,” Hepner said.

Hepner explained that the event is designed to give the community an opportunity to get acquainted with Hopewell UMC, which has been part of the community since 1783. This includes the church’s 900-seat outdoor amphitheater where the Hopewell Drama Ministry presents performances throughout the year. “We will have a lot of displays and tables (detailing) church programs,” said Hepner. “We want to (showcase) the church campus to the community. “ Worship services at Hopewell UMC include a Saturday contemporary service at 5:25 p.m. in the main sanctuary. Sunday traditional worship services are held at 8 a.m. in Bower Chapel, located on the church campus, and at 9:30 a.m. in the outdoor amphitheater. A Sunday contemporary worship service is held at 10:55 a.m. in the main sanctuary.

CERT Course from pg 1 The course will take place on Mondays, Sept. 16 to Nov. 4, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Attendees must attend all of the class sessions in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Youths between 16 and 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

“We’re not training you to jump on a fire truck or follow an ambulance. CERT is all about when first responders are overwhelmed,” explained Joe Sciandra, lead instructor. “For example, in flooding, (sometimes first responders cannot) get to the area to help people that are affected.

Because the nature of CERT and because it is neighborhood-based, people are literally right there.”

Since the local area has recently experienced tornadoes and flooding, Sciandra said the class is highly relevant. “The fact is that we are having more violent weather. Those are the kind of things that overwhelm the first responders,” he pointed out.

While participants in the program take part in activities such as search and rescue and extinguishing small fires, there are no physical requirements needed to take the CERT course.

“Anybody that wants to help out and be aware and help in disaster response is (invited) to attend,” said Sciandra. “There is a place in CERT for anybody. In the aftermath

of disaster, there are a lot of jobs and things that have to get done. You don’t have to be a rescuer to be part of the program.”

The CERT course includes a section on disaster psychology, which teaches people how to look out for one another, and a section on terrorism, which details the warning signs that indicate that a person may want to harm others.

In the Light Search and Rescue unit, the class is taught how to determine if it is safe to go into a structure, then properly search for and rescue survivors. “CERT members are taught how to safely transport survivors from one place to another using simple and effective methods that require common resources such as a chair or blanket. We also teach them how to safely extricate a survivor from being trapped in debris,” Sciandra explained. “The CERT members are clearly taught appropriate boundaries for these rescues. They do not start digging in a pile of rubble for survivors. That is the job of highly trained rescue teams. We try to teach CERT members the importance of their own safety first; they are not trained to take risks that would compromise their own safety.”

On the final day of the program, there will be a full-scale simulation where CERT members will put to action all the skills they have learned.

New Board Members Appointed Downingtown Area Senior Center recently announced two new appointments to its board of directors. Evelyn Petersen and Curt Schroder have agreed to serve on the board for a one-year term.

Petersen has been a resident of Chester County for more than 30 years and resides in Tredyffrin-Easttown with her family. She has supported Junior Achievement, Cradles to Crayons, The Eagles Charitable Foundation, and the Devon Horse Show through volunteer work. Petersen is a vice president, relationship manager, with Santander Bank.

Schroder is the former state representative from the 155th District who represented the Borough of Downingtown and surrounding areas for 17 years. During his time in the legislature, Schroder was a supporter of the Downingtown Senior Center, becoming familiar with the activities provided by the center as well as the challenges of serving the senior population. Schroder resides in West Bradford Township with his family.

The Downingtown Senior Center currently serves seniors at its location in the Thorndale United Methodist Church.

More than 600 older adults are provided meals, services, and classes five days per week. Unattended Veterans Service Planned

The Unattended Veterans Service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown. The service will honor the memory of nine unclaimed veterans from Chester County with full military honors.

The public is invited to the Unattended Veterans Service on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown.

The Chester County Coroner’s Office will inter the cremated remains of nine unclaimed veterans from the county with full military honors.

The veterans are Walter John Kelly, U.S. Navy seaman, Vietnam era, from Phoenixville; Stanley Joseph Wapnarski, U.S. Air Force sergeant, Vietnam era, from Phoenixville; Glennwood Redden, U.S. Marine Corps corporal, from Coatesville; Lawrence P. Burgess, U.S. Army specialist, Vietnam era, from Coatesville; Robert Stewart, U.S. Army private first class,

Vietnam era, from Parkesburg; John Paul Poehlman, U.S. Army specialist, from Parkesburg; Henry Thomas Spencer, U.S. Army private first class, Vietnam era, from West Chester; Henry J. Tea, Fashion Show A tea and fashion show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Wagontown Fire Company Social Hall, 412 W. King’s Highway (Route 340), Wagontown. Also featured will be refreshments and door prizes.

The event is being sponsored by the St. Anastasia’s Sisterhood, a women’s group from Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Coatesville. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

The event, in its ninth year, will benefit local charitable organizations. This year half of the proceeds will benefit the Chester County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired with the Sisterhood sharing the other half.

Spectators are invited to attend the car show for free, but they are asked to donate nonperishable food items for the CCFB. A truck from the food bank will be on hand to accept the donated food. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

In addition, Giant will have prefilled bags of food that people may purchase for a nominal donation and give to the food bank.

“That’s the main reason we do this - for the Chester County Food Bank,” said O’Fria, noting that the car show generally generates at least 2,500 pounds of food for the CCFB, as well as monetary donations.

The upcoming show will feature cars, motorcycles and trucks ranging from antiques to modern-day vehicles. “We are expecting 250 custom cars, hot rods, trucks and bikes,” said O’Fria.

Also featured will be music, games and a chance to win door prizes. Food will be offered for sale.

The car show will also have new attractions this year, including a display of microcars. “We will also have two live demonstrations this year - how to detail your car by Jeff Reinert from JSR’s Automotive Art and metal shaping by premier metal shaper Mike Phillips from Phillips Automotive and Performance in Downingtown. He will be showing people how you can actually bend and shape metal to make a part to fit for your car. Very few people in the country do it; it’s

a lost art.”

Trophies will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place vehicles as determined by judges, and a People’s Choice Award will also be bestowed. O’Fria noted that there are also some unique car show awards giving everyone a chance to win a trophy.

These awards include Whoever Traveled the Farthest, Oldest Car/Female Owned and Oldest Car/Youngest Driver.

“Last year, we had a 19-year-old with a Ford from the 1920s,” O’Fria pointed out.

“We also (award a trophy for) Oldest Car/Oldest Owner, Coolest Street Rod, Hottest Muscle Car, Work in Progress and my favorite, Loves the Gas Pump.”

A total of 25 trophies custom made by TDC members will be awarded. The trophies are made of old car parts that are cleaned, welded together, powder-coated and then painted.

In addition to its annual car show, the club holds a monthly Cruise for the Troops car show on Saturdays from May through September. The final event of the season will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Main Street at Exton shopping center on Route 100.

Club members, who pay a yearly membership fee, typically meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room at the CCFB, 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton. Guests are welcome. Having a specialized vehicle is not a requirement, as the club is open to owners of all types of vehicles.

On display will be iron items produced

by Dowlin Forge that were excavated in 1995. A forerunner of steel mills, forges were prevalent in southeastern Pennsylvania, numbering 37 by 1791. Dowlin Forge, originally named Mary Ann Forge, was built in 1785.

Visitors will also be able to view a water wheel hub and specimens of pig iron, iron spikes, bar iron and plate iron. A timeline of the Dowlin Forge will trace its history from when it was established by Samuel Hibbard in 1785 through various

ownerships by the Dowlin family, beginning in 1801. William Dowlin was responsible for bringing the railroad to the forge in 1859. The Struble Trail currently follows the old railroad line.

Uwchlan Township is noted for the preservation of many landmarks that reflect the historical heritage of the local area. Among these landmarks, the John Cadwalader House, the Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse, and the Uwchlan Meeting House are open on the first Sunday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. from April through November. All three buildings are located on North Village Avenue in Lionville.

“There is a business meeting where the treasurer gives a report and the activities people talk about what is coming up.

We sign people up for events and welcome new people, and then there is an informational or fun (event),” explained Noonan, noting that some people arrive to the meetings early to eat dinner together. “During the holidays, we do a gift exchange. Late in the season, we’ll do a photo contest of past trips.”

Guest speakers are also featured. “(In the past) someone from Exton Bicycles talked about bike maintenance, and we had a fashion show by Wick’s Ski Shop (now Buckman’s),” he said.

Although the name of the club suggests it is primarily for skiers, members are invited to propose other outings and trip destinations. “Whatever interests people,

that’s what we offer,” Noonan added.

“There will be a relatively short presentation by the president of the club, who will talk about who we are and provide a brief history of the club and (its) affiliation with the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council,” noted Tim Noonan, a member of the activities committee. “An activities person will talk about the benefits of being a member of the club and talk about all the activities that are planned for the remainder of the fall and then the ski season.

Then, there will be a (social) time.”

The event will also include drawings for free memberships for new members only and a display of photos of past events and trips.

Upcoming outings planned by the club include full moon kayaking at Marsh Creek State Park on Saturday, Sept. 14, kayaking on the Conestoga River near Perelman Park in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 21 and a horseback ride on Sunday, Oct. 20 at a location to be determined.

The David’s Drive 831 charity recently donated an automated external defibrillator (AED), an emergency lifesaving device for use in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, to Dowingtown VFW Post 845.

The charity was founded in honor of David Turner Jr., who died of a suspected heart arrhythmia at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009. At the tiem, he worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. “(By donating the AED), David’s sister, Samantha, wanted to save other families from the heartache of a similar experience,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive 831. The charity also purchased an AED in June and placed it at Triple Fresh Market in Coatesville, where David Jr. was once employed.

Chester County Backyard Bucks will present the group’s 10th annual Freedom Dinner/Sportsmen’s Event on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Wagontown Fire Company, 412 W. Kings Highway (Route 340), Coatesville. The event, which will feature dinner, silent and live auctions, prize giveaways and more, is open to people of all ages, including hunters and non-hunters alike.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. for a social hour, and there will be hors d’oeuvres and games. The silent auction will also be open, offering items such as nature-related artwork, fishing trips, hunting trips, coolers and handmade fishing rods.

There will be a table of prizes geared toward women. “There will be a lot of Amish-made crafts and jewelry,” said Art Lyle, one of the event organizers, noting that there will also be a special prize drawing for veterans in attendance. “Veterans stand up and we recognize them and thank them for their service.”

A catered buffet dinner will start at 6 p.m. Winners of the silent auction items will be announced after dinner.

A live auction will conclude the event.

Live auction items will include artwork, home décor and collectibles.

In addition, Backyard Bucks will give out a hunting trip to Ohio to a deserving family that was chosen by the chapter members.

The name of the family will be announced

during the dinner.

Those who make a set monetary donation or bring three nonperishable food items to the event will receive a free ticket to be entered into a drawing to win a muzzleloader. The monetary and food donations will be given to local food cupboards.

Backyard Bucks is the Chester County chapter of Whitetails Unlimited (WTU), which has close to 500 chapters in the U.S. Proceeds from the Sept. 7 event will be used by the local chapter for projects such as youth programs and conservation and preservation efforts.

Every summer, the chapter sponsors a free archery program at the Chester County Conservation Camp held at Paradise Farms in Downingtown, supplying the bows, arrows and targets.

“The event this year was in July, and we had more than 40 kids attend,” Lyle said.

“We teach them archery and archery safety, and they shoot at targets. We’re not trying to make them hunters. It gives them something different to do.

“It’s a good activity for families because it’s not that expensive. You can shoot at targets, make up games and get scores.

(Archery) teaches concentration and safety.

It’s really fun. It’s a cool recreational thing to do.”

The club also sponsors youths to attend the camp each summer.

Mullin Qualifies For National Competition community service projects. Victoria serves as the vice president of the Association for Women’s Empowerment. During the summer, she has been studying Spanish abroad in Spain and taking part in community service projects.

PHARE Grant To Aid Homeless The Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) fund awarded a $75,000 grant to Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children to expand the Homeless Prevention Program (HPP).

The grant will be used to hire a case manager based in Coatesville to work with 25 additional families to maintain permanent housing through a balance of financial assistance and strength-based case management.

Funding for the PHARE program comes from three main sources. Since 2012, the program has received a portion of the impact fees collected from natural gas companies operating in the state with the goal of addressing the housing shortage caused by the impact of drilling. That is supplemented with two major new funding sources that include a portion of the realty transfer tax and money from the National Housing Trust Fund.

PHARE funding is expected to impact more than 2,500 Pennsylvania households through a variety of efforts. The efforts include funding rental/utility assistance, down payment/closing cost assistance for first-time homebuyers, blight remediation initiatives, rental housing preservation and rehabilitation, and other innovative projects and programs.

Friends Association promotes the independence of families with children by providing shelter, programs, and services that prevent and end homelessness in Chester County. In fiscal year 2019, Friends Association assisted 354 men, women, and children through four platforms of service, providing 92 families with services focused on individual need and personal capacity while offering compassion and tools to build a stable foundation for the future.

Church Dedicates Columbarium The Episcopal Church of the Trinity in Coatesville recently dedicated its newly constructed columbarium affixed to the existing church structure. The Rt. Rev. Daniel G.P. Gutierrez, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, concelebrated with the Rev. Sherry Deets, rector.

As part of the dedication ceremony, former members Lawrence and Alberta Taliaferro were the first to be officially inurned in the columbarium. The niche was opened and the two urns placed by Victor J. Shanley, chairman of the Columbarium Committee, under whose management the columbarium was built. The niche and its contents were then blessed by Bishop Gutierrez.
