GRIEF SEMINAR

Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, will host a grief seminar on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for persons who have experienced the loss of a spouse due to death. There will be a brief video followed by a small group discussion. Participants will receive a booklet that includes an outline for taking notes during the video, devotional materials, grief recovery exercises and more. The registration fee includes the booklet. Calico Cutters Quilt Guild will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at the Goshen Fire Company, 1320 Park Ave., West Chester. Speaker Jane Sassaman will present “Under the Influence.” Sassaman will talk about the visual and philosophical ideas that have influenced her work and herself. will present StarFest 2019 on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. During the event, visitors will be able to view the night sky through powerful telescopes. The annual event will also feature educational activities for children, guest speakers and door prizes. Providing help and information to local senior citizens was the goal of the program on July 29 at the Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC). During the day, seniors were able to sign up for the Chester County Food Bank’s Senior Food Box Program and were given a voucher to purchase fresh produce on-site. The day also included a free fan distribution and complimentary hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages provided by CASC. The event was presented by CASC, the Brandywine Health Foundation, the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) and PECO, which partnered together to distribute 100 fans to local residents. The fans were given to lowincome residents, with the primary distribution to seniors. “The priority is to keep our older folks cool,” said George Ramon, CASC

Claudia Rose-Muir, CCFB’s direct distribution program manager, was on hand to screen recipients for eligibility in the Senior Food Box Program. As part of the effort, boxes of food containing items such as cereal, pasta, canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice, tuna fish and more are distributed monthly to more than 750 seniors. Recipients can pick up their boxes at 30 community sites, including food pantries, senior centers and senior housing facilities. “(To receive the boxes,) you have to be age 60 or above and there is a certain (qualifying) income level,” explained Rose-Muir, noting boxes can be picked up at any senior center in Chester County. “The box contains about 23 different shelf-stable items. Fan Distribution And More Offered At CASC

will include a dance workshop from 7:30 to 9 p.m., during which participants will learn and then dance a few Americana-style folk dances like the heeltoe polka and the Virginia reel, which will be set to traditional and modern music. Junior National Field Hockey Team By Francine Fulton

When his sister’s field hockey team was without a goalie, Toby Peck, at the age of 9, stepped in as a substitute. After that experience, Toby has been playing the game ever since and was recently named to the United States Men’s Junior National Indoor Field Hockey Team. Although field hockey is more commonly a women’s sport in the United States, the men’s national team is currently ranked 24th in the world, according to Intentional Hockey Federation (FIH) World Rankings. Toby, 15, who will be a sophomore this fall at Downingtown High School West (DHSW), was named to the junior national team after taking part in tryouts in March at The Training Center in Pottstown, which were held by USA Field Hockey.
