WOMEN IN THE WILD

West Caln Sportsmen’s Club, 1271 Telegraph Road, Coatesville, will host its annual Women in the Wild event on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., rain or shine. Women age 18 and over may choose from 10 introductory sessions that range from kayaking and orienteering to selfdefense and situational awareness to archery and shooting. Preregistration per person will be discounted. The registration fee will include a continental breakfast, up to four sessions, and lunch. The Calico Cutters Quilt Guild will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Goshen Fire Company, 1320 Park Ave., West Chester. Cindy Grisdela will present a lecture and trunk show with examples of her work and will also give tips about color selection. Grisdela will also conduct a workshop on improvisational play with lines and curves on Tuesday, Aug. 7. As this month’s charity project, school supplies for preschoolers will be collected for the West Chester Friends Association and Head Start. The meeting is open to guests for a nominal fee. Two World War II Veterans Reunite By Francine Fulton

Two United States Army veterans who served together during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II have continued their friendship for more than 70 years. Eugene Morell, 92, was only 18 when the battle took place, and Ira Needham, 99, was 25. The pair recently met in person when Morell traveled from New York with his granddaughter and her family to meet with Needham in his home in Honey Brook. The two spent the day together sharing snacks and beverages and reminiscing about their time together in the war. “We were on a 105 Howitzer together,” said Needham, explaining that the large piece of artillery was brought into battle on the back of a truck. “We are the only two left from our outfit.” “There were five us that operated the See Veterans pg 7

As fans still celebrate the championship victory of the Philadelphia Eagles, Man to Man, the men’s ministry group at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC), in Downingtown, will present “Tailgate With Author Josh Cooley” on Monday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. Cooley is the author of “The Biggest Win,” a book that details the lives and faith of six Eagles players on the championship team, including Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Zach Ertz, Trey Burton, Jordan Hicks and Chris Maragos. In the book, Cooley, a freelance sports writer, author and full-time children’s minister, tackles the issues of faith in professional football and other sports. The book includes forwards by Wentz, Foles, Ertz and others. See Hopewell UMC pg 4

Church Offers Worshipful Wednesdays Penn State Extension Names New Educator By Francine Fulton

The Old Caln Historical Society has posted its next open house, which will take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. Guided tours of the circa 1726 Old Caln Meetinghouse, located on Route 340 in Thorndale, and the circa 1837 Hexagonal Schoolhouse, located on Municipal Drive in Thorndale, will be conducted by members of the historical society and the Caln Township Historical Commission. Logan Hall, who has been involved in 4-H since he was in elementary school, was recently named an extension educator by the Chester County 4-H Youth Development Program. Hall, who started his new job on July 9, grew up in Cumberland County, located near Harrisburg. “4-H has been a part of my life since age 9 or 10,” said Hall. “I started in Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club and then joined the Cumberland Farm Stock Club. I grew up in town, but my aunt had eight acres outside of Carlisle, which is where my agriculture and livestock experience comes from.” During his youth, Hall showed market goats, breeding goats, market hogs, breeding sheep, market sheep and poultry, among other livestock. “We also See Educator pg 8
