Three Casts To Stage Musical At SALT Theater

Three separate casts, including a children’s group, teenagers and adults, will perform “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised)” at SALT Performing Arts. Performances will take place at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs.

The children’s cast performances will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 4, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The teenage cast will perform on Friday, Aug. 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The adult cast will stage the play on Friday, Aug. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 17, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

“This show is so sweet, joyful and playful, with funny dialogue and catchy orchestrations, that we decided it would be a great opportunity to showcase SALT talent from different age groups. So we are giving each cast a weekend to perform the show,” explained Lauren McComas, SALT president and artistic director. “Although it’s the same script for all three casts, each gang displays a slightly different take of (the play).”

She pointed out that two siblings and a father/daughter team are playing the same character in different shows.

Snoopy is being played in the children’s cast by Addison Kunsch, and her father, Kurt Kunsch, is playing Snoopy in the adult cast. Also, two brothers are playing Schroeder - Dylan Zangwill in the teenage cast and Zane Zangwill in the children’s cast.

The Bovine Social Club (BSC) will perform its unique brand of folk music on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at Honey Brook Borough Park, 73 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey

In lieu of paying an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

Sometimes, a pet rescue organization does more than find forever homes for dogs and cats that have been homeless or unwanted.

In the case of Vietnam veteran David Tillman, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue was able to provide care for his dog, Dakota, until the pair could be reunited.

Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg, explained that she was contacted in January by a social worker at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center about a homeless veteran and his dog, which needed help.

to stay for several months,” Bauer explained. “I formed a relationship of trust with David, and I told him that we would help house his dog so that he could go into a program with the VA for several months and get back on his feet.”

Tillman, who served in the United States Navy, said that even though he was living in hotels and sometimes in his car, he was determined to keep Dakota, a 6year-old Labrador pit bull mix. “I got him when he was nine months old from a friend of mine,” said Tillman. “I would never have given him away.”

Tillman was able to qualify for the Housing and Urban Development Veterans Affairs Support Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which was formed to help veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living.

Lucky Dawg started a GoFundMe campaign in January to fund the cost of a hotel room where Tillman could stay and to finance veterinary care for Dakota while

According to BSC lead singer and guitarist Samuel Saint Thomas, the band’s show will feature originals, as well as selections from its five-state spring tour featuring the music and poetry of Tom Waits.

“We are an original band for sure,” he said. “We do some songs by other early country and old-time writers though, and we have a special thing for the songs of Tom Waits. We just came off of a very successful tour of nothing but his songs.”

In addition to Saint Thomas, BSC includes Casey McGinty on violin and vocals, Ronald Baumann on upright bass and vocals, Shawn McCarty on mandolin and Drew Siciliano on drums. Saint Thomas noted that the band’s name was chosen completely at random “and is quite meaningless.”

Saint Thomas explained that he comes from a musical background, citing some of his favorite musical influences as Bill Monroe, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. His father, who was a minister, also had a radio show that he recorded in his church.

“He sat up there with his recorders, his microphones and I sat next to him. Of course I couldn’t make a sound,” Saint

In May, Tillman moved into the Whitehall Apartments in Spring City. Opened in 2017, the facility was constructed to provide permanent supportive housing for atrisk veterans in Chester County. The facility includes the newly renovated historic Whitehall Inn, as well as 48 affordable apartments for veterans. Residents of the apartments have access to support services provided by the Coatesville VA and a fulltime resident services coordinator.

Tillman and Dakota are now living together permanently in the Spring City apartment. The rescue will continue to support Dakota’s needs of food and veterinary

Tillman was completing a program at the Coatesville VA before a housing spot opened up for him through the HUD-VASH program.

Since Lucky Dawg does not have a physical building, it relies on volunteer foster families to care for dogs and cats until permanent housing can be found. “One of my amazing foster families stepped up and fostered Dakota for a month,” Bauer reported.

In addition, the rescue arranged for Dakota to be boarded with a local trainer.

“I saw that David was having trouble walking Dakota, not only from Dakota pulling, but from the neuropathy in his legs, so I reached out to Patrick Fitzgerald at Keystone K9 for training,” Bauer explained.

“We got together a plan, and through money raised from the rescue and Patrick giving a discount for his training, Dakota went through six weeks of training.”

She noted that the trainer will now work with Tillman on the commands that Dakota has learned so that he can walk him with ease. Dakota will eventually become a certified service dog.

“I was able to go and visit him in foster care and when he was in training,”

Youth members of Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program based in Chester County will exhibit dairy, family living, horse, livestock and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) projects during the annual Chester County 4-H Fair, to be held from Monday, Aug. 5, through Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook.

This year’s showcase will kick off on Aug. 5 with the judging of 4-H projects and displays in the general classroom; the public speaking and demonstration contest; and the goat, sheep and beef cattle shows.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, youths will exhibit their pigs. Then on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 4-Hers will compete in the inaugural Farm and Livestock Quiz Bowl contest, as well as the annual livestock sale beginning at 5:30 p.m., which will include the presentation of this year’s Chester County 4-H Spirit Award.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, youths with compete in the dairy goat show and exhibit pet goats. The dairy cattle show will follow on Friday, Aug. 9, and the fair week will wrap up with the horse show on Aug. 10.

New this year, the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce will host the “Taste of the Farm” event in partnership with the Romano 4-H Center and Penn State Extension on Aug. 6. This event will bring together local agricultural businesses and the community to celebrate the impact agriculture has on the western region of Chester County. Joseph has earned 42 merit badges and four Eagle Palms. He was elected by his fellow Scouts into the Order of the Arrow. He also participated in and graduated from the National Youth Leadership Training program. Awards he has earned in Boy Scouts include the World Conservation Award, National Outdoor Award, Gettysburg Heritage Trails Award and BSA Historical Trails Award.

Through BSA programs, Joseph has served various organizations. Boy Scout from pg 1 Joseph Kokinda of Downingtown has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Joseph is a member of Troop 2 at St. Joseph Parish in Downingtown. He recently celebrated his achievement with family, friends and fellow Scouts at his Eagle Court of Honor ceremony.

Joseph’s Eagle Scout project was to research, design, create and install fitness trail signage for fitness stations at East Brandywine Community Park. In addition to installing new fitness trail signs, the project involved completing a group of improvements to each of the stations.

Joseph started his Scouting career as a Tiger Scout in Pack 2 at St. Joseph’s Parish in Downingtown. He completed the full program and earned the highest achievement in Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light Award. He also earned other awards, including the Valley Forge Historical Trail Medal, World Conservation Award, Light Of Christ Religious Award, Parvuli Dei Religious Award and SuperNova STEM Award for Cub Scouts.

After Cub Scouts, Joseph joined Troop 2.

As a Boy Scout, he has continued to serve the community and develop leadership skills, and he has participated in outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, orienteering and whitewater rafting.

The annual event will also feature educational activities for children, along with guest speakers and door prizes. Star gazing will begin at 9:30 p.m. Admission and parking will be free, but donations will be accepted. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. A food vendor will be on-site.

Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal prescription drug abuse prevention.

Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost.

Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse.

Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial,

dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription.

This spring, after a review of applications and site visits, the CAYPP members selected two organizations to receive grants totaling $15,000.

Child Guidance Resource Center (CGRC) received a $10,000 grant to support the use of preventative health care services to address mental health conversations before they affect emotions and impact someone’s behavior. It recognizes that teenagers may struggle with anxiety, depression, grief, and low self-esteem, and its goal is to help address this. It will provide groups of youths, mainly ages 12 to 16, with a safe environment to share their thoughts and connect with their peers. The sessions will focus on helping participants understand and identify their feelings.

Minding Your Mind received a $5,000

grant. Minding Your Mind’s mission is to reduce the stigma and destructive behaviors associated with mental health issues and to promote help-seeking behavior in youths through education.

Its suicide prevention programs are aimed at teachers, parents, caregivers, and administrators. The purpose of this program is for participants to better understand stigma and identify action steps to reduce stigma.

Citadel, the Marshall Reynolds Foundation, and Genuardi Family Foundation support the Coatesville Area Youth Philanthropy Program. CAYPP not only distributes grant dollars to pressing community issues, but aims to inspire youths to be philanthropists, explore careers in the nonprofit sector, and develop their leadership skills.

Make It With Wool Contest Planned SUMMER REBATE OFFER! Any person who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool is invited to enter the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool contest. The contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg.

Entry paperwork is due by Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Competition divisions are Pre-Teen, age 12 and under; Junior, ages 13 to 16; Senior, ages 17 to 24; Adult, age 25 and over; and Made for Others, in which the creator and the model will present the ensemble. Ages are as of Jan. 1.

Contestants will model the garments. In addition, the garments will be “flat-judged.” All entrants will receive a piece of wool as a prize. Winners in each division will receive additional prizes.

The Junior and Senior winners will each receive an expenses-paid trip to the national Make It With Wool contest in January 2020, which will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The contest encourages the use of wool or other animal fibers. All fabrics or yarns used for the main part of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber, such as wool, alpaca, or mohair. Trims and linings may be other fibers.

Dale Krapf Receives PSBA Award Dale N. Krapf, chairman of the board of the directors for the Krapf Group, was presented with the Pennsylvania School Bus Association (PSBA) Bus Stops Here Award at the PSBA annual Convention and Trade Show held in Gettysburg from June 23 to 25. Dale was joined by members of his family and the Krapf team in Gettysburg for the occasion.

The Krapf Group is located in West Chester and began operations in 1942.

The company now operates school buses in four states. Dale joined the company full time in 1967 and for the past 52 years has dedicated himself to the school bus profession.

Dale is one of the founding members of the PSBA and served as its president from 1984 to 1986. The Bus Stops Here Award is presented to a person the PSBA executive committee feels has made a significant contribution to the PSBA. This person is recognized for upholding the ideals of the PSBA and working to fulfill the safety, education and advocacy missions of the

association. Upon nomination, the executive committee affirms that the nominee is respected and held out as a role model by their peers, school administrators and members of the community and that the nominee has upheld the core values of the PSBA and contributed to its mission.

Bishop Shanahan Holds Commencement $35,061,137 in college scholarships. Of the scholarships, 18 were full-tuition scholarships and 68 were presidential scholarships.

The Most Rev. Timothy Christian Senior, rector of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, presided over the graduation ceremony.

Bridget O’Donnell, a resident of East Fallowfield and a National Merit Finalist, who will attend University of Notre Dame, was the valedictorian. Nicholas

Downing of Malvern, who will attend Villanova University, was the salutatorian.

Also at the commencement exercises, the Shanahan Medal was presented to Eileen Cornell. This medal is awarded annually to a person or group of persons whose service, commitment and dedication to Catholic education deserve recognition and gratitude.

Cornell has served as a volunteer

at BSHS for 30 years assisting with special events, fundraising and database management. Her three children also all graduated from Shanahan.

The 2019 Harold Martin Leadership Award honoree is Rob Nicolini of Clarke, Nicolini & Associates.

The Small Businessperson of the Year Award recognizes the owner or CEO of an ERCC small business who demonstrates original entrepreneurship and leadership, staying power and positive response to adversity in a changing business environment, and community

involvement and commitment to specific community projects.

The 2019 Small Businessperson of the Year Award honoree is Maria O’Connell of Express Employment Professionals.
