Library Hosts Science In The Summer By Francine Fulton

Reading Incentive Program To Continue

How food is digested, what makes the heart work and how DNA makes everyone unique are some of principles that students are learning as part of the Science in the Summer program being offered in July and August at local libraries. The theme of this year’s session is “The Science of Me.” Locally, the program was held at the Chester Spring Library on July 1 and 2 as part of a new two-day, twohour format. In past years, the session was held for one hour on four days. Instructor Tim O’Leary, an eighthgrade science teacher in the Avon Grove School District, explained that he is piloting the new two-day program for Chester County. “Sometimes there was too much to do in that one hour,” O’Leary said. “The two hours give us time to extend (the learning).” See Science In The Summer pg 12

It is not too late for patrons of all ages to take part in the Summer Reading Program at the Chester Springs Library. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” Participants will be asked to keep track of their reading activities in order to earn chances for an end-of-summer prize drawing. For children, prizes will include a snow cone machine, a Magic Rocks crystal growing kit and a Marvel comics trading card set. Prizes for teenagers will include a sketch book and colored pencil set and bath bombs. Adult prizes will include a pass for four to Longwood Gardens and two complimentary tickets to a show at SALT Performing Arts. Young children up to age 5, as well as school-age students ages 6 to 11, will be asked to fill out a summer reading See Reading Program pg 12

As part of the Science in the Summer program held recently at the Chester Springs Library, students, including Jeffrey Martin (left in left photo) and Graham Auchter (right in left photo), learned about the digestive system by stretching out ribbons measuring 20 feet, which is the length of the small intestine.

183 Second Ave., Phoenixville, will present Movie Night on Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. The library will screen “The Public,” a 2018 movie that is rated PG-13. The drama focuses on what happens when homeless people in Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the cold. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are required on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org or by calling 610-933-3013, ext. 132. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

The theme is “Roar: Life Is Wild ... God Is Good.” Registration is free and may be completed by visiting www.olcchurch.org, calling 610-857-0511 or emailing jdagney@olcchurch.org.
