UPCOMING MEETING

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Chester County will meet on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at the Recovery Center, 825 Paoli Pike, West Chester. The meeting will feature the screening of an original film that aired in 2013 titled “Call Me Crazy: A Five Film.” The film highlights the challenges and triumphs of living with mental illness. The story is told through a series of five interconnected short films exploring a different facet or perspective on mental illness. Admission is free, and all are welcome. The 2019 Summer Series being presented by the Caln Township Parks and Recreation Board will begin with an event on Friday, June 21, at Caln Municipal Park, 253 Municipal Drive, Thorndale. Activities, including a bounce house and children’s games, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Food trucks will be on hand, and the park’s playground will be open. The movie “Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, and free popcorn will be provided. Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. The Black Women of Chester County In Action (BWCCA), a newly formed nonprofit organization, will hold an Aya Café and Wellness Fair on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) building, 22 N. Fifth Ave., Coatesville. The free event will feature an optional 1-mile walk, complimentary breakfast and lunch and information about ways to improve women’s health. The program is free and open to all

women age 16 and over. BWCCA member Connie Rose, one of the event organizers, explained that BWCCA has adopted the African symbol Aya as its logo. An Aya is a fern that symbolizes endurance and resourcefulness. According to “The Adinkra Dictionary,” which defines symbols of West Africa, a person who wears the Aya symbol suggests that he or she has endured adversity and outlasted many challenges. Those who regularly travel along Route 401 may not realize that the roadway was once known as the Conestoga Turnpike, complete with tollbooths, long before the Pennsylvania Turnpike came to be. That will be one of the interesting historical facts that will be presented during the Town Tours and Village Walks program that will make a stop in West Vincent Township on Thursday, June 20. “Ludwigs Corner c. 1770: A Stop on the Conestoga Turnpike” will be presented at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, See Tour pg 5

Improvements For Kayakers By Francine Fulton

Thanks to Eagle Scout Steven Egnaczyk, kayakers who use the Brandywine Creek in Downingtown will now have a safe place to store their kayaks, as well as improved access to the water. Along with these efforts, Steven also constructed an information kiosk that provides maps of the creek and information about access points and other recreation opportunities in the area. Steven Egnaczyk, a member of Troop 220 of Lionville, received his Eagle Award during a Court of Honor ceremony held on May 21. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest award offered by the Boys Scouts of America.

will host an open house on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the university’s campus, 1145 W. King Road, Immaculata. The open house is designed for high school juniors and seniors and students interested in transferring. The event will allow prospective students to tour the campus and talk with professors, coaches, current students and administrators from all areas of campus. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the rotunda of Villa Maria Hall, and a hot breakfast will be provided in the dining hall.
