CCWS Holds Diaper Giveaway By Francine Fulton
Chester County Women’s Services held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. During the event, staff members distributed more than 6,800 diapers.
Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a pregnancy care medical center, held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. The giveaway was open to anyone in the community in need of diapers and wipes for their children due to the effects of COVID-19. Those who were interested in receiving the free diapers were asked to call CCWS in advance during normal business hours to reserve the size diapers that they needed. The event was promoted on CCWS social media sites, and information was distributed through flyers that were given out by partner organizations, such as the Community, Youth, and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Gaudenzia; and The Bridge Academy. In previous years, The Arc of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that supports people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families, held a walking and running event that took place at West Goshen Community Park in West Chester. During the fundraiser, adults and youths alike walked through bubble stations along a 1-mile course or ran a 5K through adjacent neighborhoods. This year, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event went virtual. After registering online, participants were invited to walk in their own neighborhood, in parks,

In partnership with the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Association, SALT Performing Arts will present “SALT Beyond the Walls,” a drive-in live concert-style weekend summer series that will be presented at the Ludwig’s Corner Show Grounds, 5 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore, located near the intersection of routes 100 and 401. “SALT Beyond the Walls” began on June 12 with the presentation of “Broadway Showstoppers.” In support of securing the equity of rights and elimination of race-based discrimination, SALT donated 20% of the proceeds from the opening weekend performances to the NAACP. That Friday, (March 20), we made the decision not to have the event publicly,” said Becki Patterson, HfHCC marketing and communications manager, noting that the event regularly draws approximately 350 people and more than 150 entries. “We had the sponsorships lined up and the programs printed. We knew all the participants had been working on their entries, and we reached out to them letting them know we would figure something out. We had to come up with a Plan B.” This year, 28 students submitted their dream home designs for the virtual contest, which took place on May 2. To view the entries, readers may visit www.YouTube.com and search for “Virtual Build a House Build a Dream Event.” A highlight of this year’s submissions included “green” designs with features such as rooftop gardens and areas for composting and recycling. One entry included a bioethanol fireplace. Other houses had helipads and ball pits, and one entry was a greenhouse. “The (students) are so clever,” Patterson stated. “Many of them thought of ecofriendly aspects, which is great.” The YouTube video also features a statement from NBC10’s Bill Henley, a supporter of the event who was set to be master of ceremonies for the third year. “He made an in-home video congratulating the students on their accomplishments,” Patterson noted. In a typical year, students are present along with their projects while judges, who are local architects, engineers and HfHCC volunteers, view the houses and ask questions. Prizes are then awarded. “The judges base their decision on how articulate the
students are while talking, the overall design, how much effort went into the home and what their inspiration looks like,” Patterson said, There is no cost for students to participate, but the event is a fundraiser for HfHCC. Local businesses sponsor the design competition, including presenting sponsor Fox & Roach/ Trident Charities, and they are listed in the event program. This year, the students’ work was recognized on the video, but no prizes were awarded. “Typically, we have three winners, but we did not want to limit anyone based on technology. Some submitted photos and some videos,” said Patterson. “(Instead), we celebrated the creativity and all the hard work people put in. “ She added that HfHCC was also able give away prizes to student participants, who each received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Prizes included passes to Palace Bowling & Entertainment Center and Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park. The passes will be valid once the locations reopen. Five grand prizes were also presented through a random drawing, in which participants were invited to purchase tickets. Prizes included day passes to Disney World, tickets to theme parks and additional family fun packages. “The drawing raised $890, and the event itself raised more than $17,000 to go directly to building affordable housing in Chester County,” Patterson noted, adding that HfHCC projects are currently underway in West Grove and Coatesville. Kauffman-Hapeman The marriage of Jessica Paige Hapeman and Zachary Scott Kauffman took place on Feb. 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. The Rev. Tom Hall officiated at the 4:30 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Dale and Sonya Hapeman of Salem, W.Va., and Tracy Hapeman of Pittsburgh. She graduated from Upper Saint Clair High School in 2013 and Waynesburg University in 2017. She is a special education coordinator with MHY Family Services in Mars. The groom is the son of Tad and Rose Kauffman of Shrewsbury. He graduated from Susquehannock High School in 2011 and the University of Pittsburgh in 2015. He is currently attending school to earn a master’s degree. He is employed by Curtiss Wright Corporation in Pittsburgh. The maid of honor was Jordan Skowron. Bridesmaids were Jamie Denniston, Maggie Merow, and Paige Lane. Serving as best man was Kevin McHugh. Groomsmen were Kevin Halpin, Roman Perdziola,

Chester County Government, Courts Open During Yellow Phase Twelve weeks after moving to essential services-only, Chester County Government and courts reopened the doors again of county facilities on Market Street and Westtown Road, as well as the Magisterial District Courts throughout the county. However, officials note they are proceeding with caution and have set restrictions to ensure the safety of staff members and the public as the county continues to try to control the impact of the coronavirus. The reopenings are a result of of the county’s move to the yellow phase. All Chester County courts and court-related staff returned to work on June 2 as court functions of the Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts are being restored. Jury trials are currently planned to resume in August. All Chester County government staff members who are unable to work from home to provide county programs and services returned to work on June 5. All staff members who can work from home will continue to do so. With the county’s own Health Department and Department of
Emergency Services to guide them, county senior staff members have invested in equipment and developed procedures to start the yellow phase with necessary precautions. New procedures include screening everyone who enters a county building, wearing masks and practicing social distancing, as well as maintaining hygiene and cleaning procedures. Additional mitigation strategies are currently being reviewed and refined by county departments, including appointmentonly access by the public, secure drop boxes and transitioning to virtual interactions. Details of the limited in-person and online programs and services for Chester County residents are available at www.chesco.org. More specific information on individual department services available during the yellow phase will be posted on departmentspecific web pages on the aforementioned website. Residents needing to interact in person with county departments are encouraged to call ahead or visit the website to obtain details, including requirements they must follow

However, they can roll down their windows. “We encourage everyone to applaud by putting their windshield wipers on; that will be our applause,� McComas said. On-site concessions will be available for delivery to vehicles. Each show will last approximately 90 minutes, and there are no bathroom facilities at the fairgrounds. Judy Elliott, marketing director for SALT Performing Arts, explained that the partnership between the groups began last fall during the annual Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show. “Last year, we had both at the horse show on Labor Day weekend. We had princesses there (from SALT shows), and they gave out candy,� she said, noting McComas later reached out to the association for permission to host the outdoor concert series. Since the coronavirus pandemic began, SALT has continued to provide entertainment through virtual performances. “Partnering with Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show is a win-win since the pandemic caused both of our organizations to cancel several events,� McComas noted. “We can’t wait to perform live again after months of providing weekly virtual performances via our ‘Cooped Up Cabaret’ series.� Organizers hope the audiences will enjoy the outdoor venue. “People are ready to go out again - just in a safe way,� Elliott added. Brandywine Hospital-Tower Health has once again been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for both the hospital site in Coatesville and the hospital’s Imaging Center in Downingtown. The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. In order to receive this distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography scans and appropriate follow-up care significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults ages 55 to 80 who have a 30 pack per year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The ACR, founded in 1924, devotes its resources to making

Even though the virtual event has ended, donations are still being accepted. “We were nervous in the beginning having to go virtual, but the community really came through for us and we are still getting donations now,” said, Kelli Martino, development and marketing manager, noting that the fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set by The Arc. The agency hopes to raise that amount by fiscal year end, which is on Tuesday, June 30. Proceeds from The Arc Bubble Walk Run and Fun event will support The Arc of Chester County’s programs and services, which include advocacy, children’s early learning, family support services, employment and transportation. The Arc provides services in Chester County and the surrounding area to 3,000 individuals and families a year. During the stay-at-home order, The Arc offices and preschool have been closed.
Other services that have been temporarily suspended include Building the Basics through Learning Experiences (ABBLES) classes for children with autism and adult transportation services and recreation events. However, staff members have been working from home and the agency has continued to operate. “The Arc continues to provide services as much as possible and safely,” said Potts. “Like other businesses and nonprofits, we are unable to do as much as we want or normally (do), but we are ready to (open) as soon as we can - as soon as we get the signal. “Our core mission continues to advocate, to educate and to provide services to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to enhance their quality of life,” he added. Many walkers and runners formed fundraising teams to raise additional dollars for The Arc. AAUW Supports Decade To Doorways For 2019-20, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester - Chester County has supported four Chester County shelters through the county’s Decade to Doorways (D2D) program. Each year, the local AAUW branch selects a recipient for its annual Gateway to Equity Award, which honors an individual, group or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission to advance equity for women and girls though advocacy, education and research. D2D was the recipient this year. Through its selection of the D2D program, which aims to prevent and end homelessness in Chester County, AAUW supported county shelters that house women: Community, Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children; Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC); and Safe Harbor. At each monthly meeting of AAUW, members contributed household and personal items, monetary donations, gift cards and/or volunteer support to a different shelter throughout AAUW’s program year, September through May. Jane Schultz and Fran Pierce, liaisons to Friends Association, arranged for decorating help for the Friends Association’s December gala, in addition to donating items. Liaisons to Safe Harbor were Peggy Staarman and Kim Levan, and Mimi Jones and Elaine Burgess were liaisons to CYWA. In lieu of donated items, the DVCCC

the program year is its Teapot Fundraiser, where members decorate and fill porcelain teapots with loose change for donation. These funds will be divided between Friends, Safe Harbor, DVCCC and D2D. The funds to D2D will be used for the needs of homeless families that are living in hotels due to the lack of shelter housing. Distribution of these funds will conclude this year’s AAUW support of D2D.

The Giant Company recently announced that more than 100 businesses were recipients of funds through its emergency grant program. Announced in partnership with Team Pennsylvania, The Giant Company originally designated $250,000 for the program, but due to the overwhelming response, the company decided to double the amount of funding available to $500,000. In all, the company is awarding 110 grants to help support small businesses in Pennsylvania’s food supply chain impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. More than 500 applications were received during the twoweek application period, with more than 60 in the first 24 hours. The 110 recipients span the entire commonwealth and represent multiple areas of the food supply chain, including dairy farms; beef, pork and poultry farms; processors; orchards; produce farms; apiaries; maple syrup producers; artisan cheesemakers; craft breweries, winemakers and cider producers; specialty yogurt, snack, sauce and condiment manufacturers; and a coffee roastery and confectioner. In addition, with grants ranging from $2,500 up to $15,000, 55% of grants awarded are going to PA Preferred companies and businesses with and special designations
account for more than half of the grants awarded. These designations include veteranowned, woman-owned, minority-owned, USDA defined beginner rancher/farmer, USDA defined socially disadvantaged and limited resource farmer. CCWS from pg 1 “In total, 100 families received this free service, which equated to 6,897 diapers,” reported Michelle Maloney, CCWS development director. The community was invited to contribute to the effort by donating money that was then used by CCWS to purchase the diapers. “ We have a COVID emergency fund on our website, so people gave monetary donations through that,” Maloney explained. “ We also have an Amazon baby registry and a Walmart wish list. People could go on and select what is on the registries and have it mailed directly to CCWS. We did not take physical donations (of diapers), so people could make a donation without contact. It was a tangible way to help.” On the day of the giveaway, CCWS staff members followed social distancing guidelines. “(People) drove up and popped their trunks (and the diapers were placed inside),” said Maloney. “For walkers, we had a table set up where we would place the bag six feet away for contactless pickup.” CCWS also plans to host diaper giveaways at its West Chester
and Kennett Square locations. “It felt so good to help the community,” Maloney shared. CCWS is a nonprofit, faithbased organization that helps women and their families who are facing unplanned pregnancies to make life-affirming choices. All services are 100% free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education classes, peer counseling, a family advocacy program and community referrals. Maloney reported that CCWS has remained open through the coronavirus pandemic. “We are seeing our clients virtually via telehealth and using Zoom for educational classes,” she said. “For those with medical (needs), we are still offering in-office medical appointments. We are still out there helping.” CCWS has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester and at 203 S. Walnut St. in Kennett Square. AAUW Awards Scholarship “If there is a single word that describes the Alice Lawson Scholarship winner, Mykia Bridgett, it’s ‘determined,’” said Deb Liczwek, co-chair of the scholarship committee along with Diane Dougherty. Bridgett received a $1,500 scholarship to West Chester University (WCU) from the West Chester - Chester County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The scholarship is awarded annually by the AAUW to a nontraditional female student. It is named for the late Alice Lawson, a lifelong AAUW member who joined AAUW branches wherever she and her husband moved. Lawson had a special empathy for young women who faced financial challenges in pursuing a college degree. Lawson was offered an opportunity to enroll in college by a nun at Seton College when her family did not have money for college after educating her four older siblings and the Depression came along. Bridgett started her journey in higher education in 1993. Marriage and children interrupted her schooling, and, for a time, she fostered children in addition to raising her own children. She adopted a foster child who is now 15 years old. Still, she did not give up her dream of pursuing higher education. Bridgett enrolled in Community College of Philadelphia, earning her Associate of Arts with high honors in 2009. That fall, she enrolled at Temple University in the Bachelor of Social Work program but was unable to continue because she had reached the maximum in allowed loans. Again, she persevered, working

In 2019, Bridgett enrolled at WCU, where her academic adviser rates her as exceptional in all areas, including initiative, motivation, reliability, creativity, leadership, communications skills and intellectual abilities. Bridgett’s adviser praised her for her “extraordinary social justice and advocacy skills,” in addition to her “strong commitment to and knack for academic excellence.” Bridgett said her experience as a mother and foster mother have shaped her educational path and choice of career. Her hope is to provide a group home for teenagers who are about to age out of the foster system, but who have few plans for their futures. Bridgett’s daughter is a student at the University of Virginia on a full academic scholarship and is scheduled to graduate in 2021. “Even if my daughter beats me to the punch and graduates first, I will proceed,” said Bridgett. “After graduation, I hope to pay it forward to someone else.”

Visitors to the new website will immediately be presented with access to a Business & Org Toolkit as well as a Resident Toolkit. The Business & Org toolkit lists guidelines that span industries, including a checklist for knowing
