“Musically, it’s much easier than other shows we’ve done, but visually, it’s pretty grandiose. A lot of magic has to happen onstage. We had to come up with a way to make it visually spectacular, and we’ve done that,” said Lauren McComas, president and artistic director of SALT Performing Arts, when describing the theater’s upcoming performance of Roald Dahl’s “ Willy Wonka.”

Students from Lindsay Mitman’s second-grade class at the Octorara Primary Learning Center spent the school year keeping in touch with their new pen pals from Ashbridge Manor Senior Living of Downingtown. After months of letters back and forth, it was time for the two groups to meet in person.

On May 21, the group of senior citizens traveled to the school to meet the children. As a greeting, the youngsters sang songs for the visitors, then the pen pals joined each other to work on a craft and talk before enjoying a snack together. The friends had time to talk and get to know each other in See Pen Pals pg 2

“The students started at the beginning of the year, and they really built a relationship with their pen pals,” Mitman said. “I think about how much today people text or email. Letter writing is not done so often, so it’s pretty cool to expose the children to that, and they got to know people from another generation. They might not have that type of relationship in their lives.”

The pen pal connection came from the family connection between Mitman and her mother, Veronique Hadfield, who is the activities director at Ashbridge Manor Senior Living.

“I wanted to reach out to someone (for the project), and she was the first one I thought of,” Mitman said.

Mitman selected students for the pen pal project who would be available all year.

Numbers were limited to one or two youngsters per

senior.

Hadfield herself joined in the project, corresponding with two second-grade pen pals, and was anxious to meet them. “We learned about each other’s hobbies; we learned a lot about each other,” she said.

“It’s been fun working with the students. This is a great time to get together and meet the person we’ve just read about in our letters.”

As the seniors and students got to know each other throughout the year, the seniors shared their wealth of experiences with the children, telling them about travel, foreign countries, their own childhood and more.

Berit Brewington is originally from Norway. She told her pen pal about her home country, and the second-graders found the country on a globe.

“He’s very well spoken, and he writes beautifully,” Brewington said of her pen pal, Christian Hepfer.

“I like to write to people, so I got to write a lot to her,”

A registration fee will be collected on the day of the show from all vehicle owners, and the vehicles will be on display in the park’s macadam parking lot.

In lieu of an admission fee, car show spectators will be asked to donate one or two canned goods or other nonperishable food items for donation to the Chester County Food Bank.

Visitors can expect to see at least 50 cars on display. Trophies will be given out for Best of Show, Ladies’ Choice and Kids’ Choice.

“Everyone that comes in will receive a ballot, and as they walk around and see the cars, they can write down the number of their favorite car,” explained Denise Stoltzfus, a member of the parks and recreation board. “At the end of the show, we will tally the votes.” Winners will be announced between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m.

Live music by The Nomads, an oldies band from southcentral Pennsylvania, will take place from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by performance

by The Roof Rockers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Roof Rockers, hailing

from Lancaster, is a nine-piece horn band that plays dance music from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, that ranges from Motown and soul music to rhythm and blues funk.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

The bands will play in the park’s amphitheater, which has also been used to host township Movie Nights. “(The park includes) ballfields, volleyball (courts), soccer fields and a play area for the children,” said Stoltzfus, noting that all the park’s amenities will be available on June 15.

Food and vendors will be onsite throughout the afternoon and evening. “Wagontown Fire Company will serve pulled pork sandwiches, and the hot dog lady will (be on hand),” Stoltzfus noted.

She emphasized that the day is open to the community, not just those who reside in the township.

“Everyone (is invited to) view the cars, (enjoy) the food and spend a leisurely afternoon and experience the concert in the West Brandywine Township amphitheater,” she said.

The Chester County commissioners recently approved a resolution calling for the county to participate in C-PACE, a clean energy financing program for commercial properties. C-PACE, which stands for Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy, is a financial tool for commercial property owners to obtain lowcost, long-term financing for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation projects. C-PACE can facilitate a loan for a project by placing a voluntary lien on the property that repays the costs of the upgrades.

Pennsylvania is one of more than 30 states that has enabled C-PACE. Audiences will be familiar with the play’s plot, which closely follows the 1971 movie that starred Gene Hackman. “They used some of the songs from the movie, but they wrote some new songs (as well),” said McComas, the show’s producer.

The play tells the story of eccentric candy manufacturer Willy Wonka, who stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his chocolate candy bars.

Those who are lucky enough to find the golden tickets are invited to tour the Wonka factory, as well as receive a lifetime supply of candy.

Four of the five children on the tour are spoiled and not well behaved, and they suffer the consequences of their actions.

However, Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour along with his grandfather, is different from the other children. “(Charlie) becomes someone very significant even though he came from nothing, and that is the ultimate message - pureheartedness is rewarded,” McComas said.

In addition to recognizing the songs and the characters, McComas said audiences will be pleased with the performance of the Oompa Loompas. “We reimagined the Oompa Loompas,” she said.

“In the movie they were orange people with green curly wigs. (For SALT’s production), they are Cirque du Soleil (performers).

They are acrobats, and they use their bodies a lot in dance and song. They are really fun.”

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) deputy secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore recently joined local and state officials to kick off the 2019 Ice Cream Trail season at Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. The creamery is on a historic 103-acre dairy farm that has been home to four generations of the Matthews family. It is one of 10 stops on the Eastern Pennsylvania Trail.

Initiated in 2018, the trail is a partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) PA Preferred program, the DCED’s PA Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE) to highlight dairy destinations across Pennsylvania.

The program includes a passport that visitors can have stamped to earn prizes at stops along each trail. More information about creameries on the trail, including a downloadable passport, can be found at www.visitPA.com/scoops. Visitors who

share photos from the trail using #PursueYourScoops may be featured on visitPA’s website and social media channels.

The trails officially opened statewide on June 1.

Jax worked as a school horse there from 2012 to 2018, teaching mostly beginner riders. Jax was always a favorite among the young students because of his sweet personality.

Because of his sway back, however, he could no longer be ridden. “Over time, their backs weaken and dip down,� explained Joelle Temoyan, Ryerss’ administrative manager. She noted that since Jax will never wear a saddle again, his condition is no longer painful. Today, he is enjoying his retirement at Ryerss.

In addition to the horses, visitors can meet Ryerss’ standard donkey and two miniature donkeys, pet them and take photos with them.

Those who have a favorite animal may purchase a pin or a magnet with the

The Greater Valley Forge (GVF) Transportation Management Association nominated the County of Chester for the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (DVRPC) Air Quality Partnership Excellence Award.

The county’s comprehensive plan, Landscapes3, focuses on the advancement of multimodal

transportation methods for the purpose of reducing congestion, supporting a clean energy network, and focusing on climate change. The Chester County Planning Commission also developed the Phoenixville Region Multimodal Transportation Plan to offer solutions for that area. The county also offers Transportation Demand Management programs.

The Air Quality Partnership program is run through DVRPC. The

Official State Amphibian Named Gov. Tom Wolf, dressed in a blue “Hellbender Defender” T-shirt, signed a bill designating the Eastern hellbender as Pennsylvania’s official state amphibian on April 23.

Since 2016, Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s (CBF) Student Leadership Council (SLC) members have spearheaded the campaign to recognize the Eastern hellbender and create greater awareness of the need to reduce pollution in Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams.

Hellbenders are an indicator species for clean water. They survive where there is cold, clear, swift-running water.

Students studied hellbenders extensively, installed nesting boxes in several Pennsylvania streams, and wrote the first draft of a bill that was sponsored by state Sen. Gene Yaw and passed the Senate last year.

The bill did not pass the House before the session ended, however.

When the new session began in January, Yaw reintroduced the effort as Senate Bill 9, which was signed into law by Wolf.

The bill was passed by the Senate and House on Feb. 4 and April 16, respectively.

Hellbenders prefer rocky streambeds.

Their spongelike bodies allow them to squeeze into crevices, which they use for protection and for nesting. Folds of wrinkled skin provide a large surface through which they draw most of their oxygen.

A lack of streamside trees along the commonwealth waterways allows waters to warm, polluted runoff to enter rivers and streams, and silt to build up in streambeds.

As a result, habitat for hellbenders has been degraded and hellbender numbers have decreased in streams where they were plentiful as recently as 1990.

The students’ hellbender campaign garnered local, state, and national attention, making it onto the front page of the Wall

Street Journal and as the subject of the iconic Mark Trail Sunday comic strip. A radio station in Canada interviewed SLC president Emma Stone.

CBF’s Student Leadership Program is open to high school students and is designed to give them a voice and an active role in clean water efforts in Pennsylvania.

Summer Potato Salad Recipe When firing up the grill or packing picnic essentials, home chefs should consider which dishes they will serve alongside the main course. Of course, no summertime meal would be complete without a tasty potato salad in the mix.

This recipe for Potato Salad with Bacon and Parsley from Allie Lewis Clapp, Lygeia Grace, and Candy Gianetti’s “Real Simple: Easy, Delicious Home Cooking” (Time Home Entertainment) offers a tasty take on this classic dish.

Potato Salad with Bacon and Parsley (Serves 6): 1.5 pounds new potatoes, about 15 Kosher salt and black pepper 4 slices bacon 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 cup fresh, flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Directions: 1 - Place the potatoes in a pot with 1 teaspoon salt and enough water to cover and simmer until tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Drain and run under cold water to cool. Cut into quarters.

2 - Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Let cool, then crumble.

3 - In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, mustard, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the potatoes, bacon, and parsley and toss to combine.

Tip: The potatoes can be cooked and tossed with the dressing and parsley up to 1 day in advance and then placed in the refrigerator, covered. The salad should be brought to room temperature and the bacon should be added just before serving.

Putting Safety First When Driving With Pets In The Car Many people can recognize the familiar image of a car traveling down the road with the head of a seemingly happy dog hanging out from the front passenger seat.

Traveling in such a way may seem harmless, but doing so can be detrimental to both pets and their owners.

According to Paws to Click, a community that aims to inspire pet owners to travel responsibly with their pets, allowing pets to travel in cars without employing a harness poses a significant threat to everyone in the car. The group notes that an unrestrained 75pound dog will exert about 2,250 pounds of force in a crash in which the car is traveling at just 30 miles per hour. Such force can injure others in the car as well as the pet.

In addition, unrestrained pets may challenge first responders in an effort to protect their owners after an accident has taken place.

It makes sense to harness pets when taking them along in the car. After all, drivers and their passengers wear seat belts, so why not provide the same safety net to pets? But Paws to Click notes that 84 percent of dog owners drive with their dogs in the car without using restraints. This despite the fact that American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF)

advises all pet owners to properly restrain their pets before departing on a car trip, no matter how short or long that trip is expected to be.

In addition to properly restraining pets on car trips, pet owners can take several other steps to ensure the safety of their pets when riding in cars: · Don’t take pets along on car trips unless it is absolutely necessary. While it can be fun to take a pet with you, the AVMF advises pet owners to leave their pets home when possible. Pet owners whose pets are exhibiting signs of anxiety should try to address the anxiety so pets are comfortable at home alone. · Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle.

On hot days, leave pets at home.

Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Motorcycle Safety Promoted PennDOT recently held a Live Free Ride Alive Motorcycle Safety Day at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. This free community event featured a variety of activities with a focus on safety, designed to challenge riders’ skills on and off their motorcycles.

Administered by PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP) offers five motorcycle safety courses free of charge to Pennsylvania class M permit and motorcycle license holders. These courses teach and reinforce the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a motorcycle.

The Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT provided riding and braking demonstrations, as well as a demonstration of one of PAMSP’s valued training tools, the SKIDBIKETM. Riders could also observe live training as students took the Intermediate Riding Clinic.

All training clinics are conducted by certified instructors and are held at many locations throughout the state. Available training clinics include the four-hour Introduction to Riding Clinic (ITR), the 16-hour Beginner Riding Clinic (BRC), the eight-hour Intermediate Riding Clinic (IRC), the eight-hour 3-Wheel Riding Clinic (3WRC), and the oneday (nine-hour) Advanced Riding Clinic (ARC). Three of the clinics - the BRC, the IRC, and the 3WRC - offer a pathway to earning a motorcycle license.

Tips For Traveling With Pets Many pet parents choose to include their four-legged companions in their travel plans. Bringing pets along can reduce the hassle of finding a pet sitter or a boarding service. Traveling with pets in tow also can be enjoyable for the entire family, including pets. Perhaps that is why a recent study from AAA and Best Western International found that more than half of American pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel.

Traveling with pets can be fun, but it means taking some extra steps when planning a trip to ensure pets are safe and content. Before hitting the road or soaring into the sky, pet owners should consider the following tips: · Acclimate the pet to the car.

Conduct a trial run with your pet in tow to gauge how it handles a car ride. Start with shorter trips and build up. Assess how the pet reacts so you can make adjustments if necessary. · Get a wellness check. Visit the

vet prior to departing, particularly if you will be traveling far or abroad.

Pack an updated copy of health and immunization records, as well as proof of ownership of the pet. Some countries require pet passports. Investigate if the destination country requires quarantine of the animal. · Buy a quality pet carrier. Be sure to have a secure and comfortable pet carrier for your dog, cat, or small animal. This can make travel safer for the animal. If flying, you may need to purchase an airlineapproved crate. Mark the crate with identification information and contact numbers. · Pack a pet-friendly kit. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests bringing along food, a bowl, a leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow. Bring along bottled water as well. Drinking unfamiliar water can upset pets’ stomachs.

· Book direct flights. A direct flight reduces the likelihood a pet will be kept on the tarmac or spend even longer times in the baggage hold of the plane. A pets-only airline might be a good choice as well.

For example, Pet Airways offers climate-controlled cabins outfitted with individual crates, and a flight attendant checks on the animals every 15 minutes. After landing, pets are given a bathroom break. · Reserve pet-friendly lodging.

Many hotel and motel chains now offer pet accommodations, and some provide pet-friendly rooms.

There may be specific requirements, such as restricting the pet to a crate when unattended. · Make sure microchip data is current. Log into the service that coordinates with the pet’s microchip. Check to see that your address and phone number are current. Consider adding temporary travel contact data so the pet can be reunited with you if it gets lost at your destination.

National Guard Sites Available For Rent Pennsylvanians who want to host a community function can consider one of 62 Pennsylvania National Guard armories or readiness centers throughout the state, as well as the Keystone Conference Center located in Annville. Maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), the armories and readiness centers serve as local training facilities for members of the Pennsylvania National Guard. When not being used for training, many are available to be rented by the public.

The facilities are spacious with plenty of parking and handicapped-accessibility and

can host reunions, fundraisers, birthday parties, or any other community event. Also available to rent is the Keystone Conference Center at Fort Indiantown Gap. Located on a wooded site on the side of Blue Mountain, above Marquette Lake, the Keystone Conference Center is a 10,000-square-foot structure with plenty of meeting and entertaining space, along with 125 parking spaces.

Tips For Preventing Pets From Getting Lost No pet parents want their furry friends to escape the house, car, or yard and become lost. But curious pets have a way of getting out on their own, which not even the most watchful pet owners can always prevent. Animals that do not know how to find their way back home can quickly become disoriented and lost.

The number of pets that go missing can be staggering.

The American Humane Association estimates that more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States every year. One in three pets will become lost at some point during its life.

While it is impossible to prevent every situation that may lead to a lost pet, pet owners can take some simple preventative steps to keep pets from becoming lost.

1. Get a collar and identification tag. Pets should wear some form of identification, which will differ based on the animal.

For example, a dog can wear a collar and a name tag. Collars may seem “old school” in a digital world, but a dog tag is an ideal - and fast - way to identify a pet and provide contact information should it get lost.

2. Invest in microchipping.

Microchipping is an effective

Skin cancer is the world’s most common cancer. In the United States, more people are diagnosed with the disease each year than all other cancers combined. When caught and treated early, skin cancer is highly curable. When allowed to progress, however, it can cause disfigurement and even death. That is why The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that adults see a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin exam and perform monthly self-exams at home. Anything on one’s skin that is new, changing, or unusual could be cause for concern.

The three most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. An estimated 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Only in exceedingly rare cases can it spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening. It should not be taken lightly, though, because it can be just as disfiguring as other forms of skin cancer, if not treated promptly.

Melanoma, one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer, is now being diagnosed more frequently than in the past. While melanoma incidence is on the rise, the mortality rate is expected to decrease by 22 percent this year.

Businesses Invited To Apply For Disaster Loan Due to the storms that took place during the summer of 2018, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania requested and obtained a Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Declaration.

EIDL assistance is available only to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, and most private nonprofit organizations in the designated counties and after the SBA determines they are unable to obtain credit elsewhere.
