“We have an Easter Bunny who will stand at the intersection to generate visibility. Scouts and sometimes even parents take turns in the bunny costume,” she added, noting that signs will also guide customers to the sale.

Kendall noted that many customers shop at the sale annually, and troop alumni often stop by. “Former members and their parents come back to support the troop,” she said. “It’s a long tradition and everybody gets involved and there is a real sense of community.”

In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,” said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum.

McKean County, location of the Allegheny National Forest and the famous Kinzua Bridge, a former railroad bridge that is now a tourist attraction, will be represented, along with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Area, which covers five counties in the northern region.

Township. In addition to the candy scramble, families will be able to enjoy additional planned activities including a bounce inflatable and music provided by a disc jockey.

Admission is free, and registration is not required. While the candy scramble is for children age 12 and younger, free refreshments will be available to everyone.

The windows are original to the church, which is 145 years old. “The cornerstone was laid on July 25, 1873, and the building was dedicated on Dec. 28, 1873,�

Organsky reported.

Additionally, the windows have been dedicated in honor of or in memory of congregation members by their families.

Many of the names and dates have worn off, and the letters on those panels will also be redone. “A lot of the letters are coming off, so we brought in a company to have them touch up the memorials,� Organsky

explained. “When they did the consultation, (they pointed out) that there are cracks in the windows and some of the them are bowing and buckling, so we need to fix them so the windows do not fail and we don’t lose them.�

She said the windows will be removed and the cracked glass panels will be replaced. “They will do them a few at a time and restore them, clean them, bring them back and reseal them to protect them,� she said, noting that the cost of the work will be between $85,000 and $90,000. “We will have a thermometer fundraiser board that will tell us our (fundraising) progress.�

For example, one window features the IHS symbol, which in Latin is an acronym for “Jesus Hominum Salvator,� which translates to “Jesus, Savior of Man.� The window is dedicated “In Loving Memory of Mazy E. Butler by her daughter, B.P. Clark.� Another window dedication reads, “Presented by Mrs. Emma Stneback’s Sunday School Class.�

There is also a window dedicated “In Loving Memory of William H. Yocum by his son Alday H. Yocum.�

The community is invited to view the stained-glass windows during the church’s office hours on Mondays from noon to 4 p.m. and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. The windows can also be viewed during the Sunday service held at 10 a.m. “People can come here and take a look at the church and maybe see if they have family members that the windows are dedicated to,� Organsky said. “It is a good way (for people) to learn about their family history.�

Organsky also announced that this month the Wallace Township Historical Commission is highlighting local churches. A display featuring photographs and other artifacts is currently on exhibit at the Wallace Township Building, 1250 Creek Road, Glenmoore. The display is available for viewing during township

Volunteers Sought For Stream Cleanup The Green Valleys Watershed Association will hold an Earth Day Stream Cleanup on Saturday, April 20, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Participants will remove trash, debris and more from along the banks of the French Creek. The group will meet at the Phoenixville Foundry, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville, and follow the trail that runs along the creek.

The nine-member Chester County Agriculture Land Preservation Board (ALPB) guides the county on farmland preservation and reviews applications from farm owners.

The ALPB is now accepting applications for farmland preservation. Farms of 10 acres or more are eligible if they are adjacent to permanently preserved

land. Farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land need to be a minimum of 50 acres in size for the commonwealth program and 25 acres in size for the Challenge Grant Program. The deadline for Chester County’s Farmland Preservation application is Thursday, Aug. 1.

At its recent meeting, the Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board awarded Chester County the highest level of funding, $3.74 million, to preserve farmland on two Chester County farms. The state board announced an overall spending threshold of $38 million for the purchase of development rights from 38 farm owners state-wide - the highest spending total in more than a decade.

Chester County’s award of state funds, added to certified county funds of $5 million for farmland preservation in 2019, positions Chester County as a state leader in funding for agricultural land preservation.

Since the start of Chester County’s agricultural land preservation program 30 years ago, more than 40,100 acres of farmland have been preserved. Factoring in current agreements of sale, the number exceeds 41,200 acres. Last December, Chester County preserved its 500th farm.

According to Commissioner Kathi Cozzone, Chester County’s agriculture industry generates more than $600 million in revenue each year. Commissioner Terence Farrell noted that the

Identifying Potential Culprits Behind Thinning Grass Thick grass is often a hallmark of a healthy lawn. If grass begins to thin, homeowners may feel as though all the time and effort they spent tending to their lawns was for naught.

Thinning grass can have any number of causes. And while it might take a little effort to address, thinning grass can be treated if homeowners correctly identify that cause of the problem. Working with a landscape professional is a great way to combat such issues before they compromise the look of a lawn.

Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungus is causing the problem.

For example, Bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungus that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such

Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from Ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho, when a lawn is affected by Ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the Ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it has seemingly been cured.

The Episcopal Church of The Trinity in Coatesville held a ceremonial groundbreaking on March 24 in anticipation of its new columbarium. Ideas and plans have been in the works for several years. Committee chair Vic Shanley and co-chair Bill Terry presented their findings to the Rev. Sherry Deets, pastor, and to fellow members of Trinity’s Vestry, receiving unanimous approval to move forward with the project.

Cremation and inurnment in a columbarium is an alternative to traditional burial. Included in the purchase of a niche is the care and maintenance provided by the soon-to-be installed Columbarium Committee, which will be responsible for all ongoing matters and responsibility germane to the oversight of the facility.

In advance of construction, Trinity has made purchase of niches accessible to the congregation. The committee, Deets, and Vestry do, however, maintain responsibility and service to the broader Coatesville community as per its mission statement.

Trinity plans to reach out to neighboring congregations and funeral homes to make them aware of this addition.

Brandywine River as their primary source of drinking water, including those living in Coatesville and Downingtown and Wilmington, Del. The cleanup is also intended to aid in providing a healthier habitat for wildlife and a safer environment for recreational activities.

The Brandywine Conservancy has teamed up with East and West Brandywine townships for this year’s cleanups. The river cleanups will take place at Brandywine Meadows Preserve Trail, 1355 Downingtown Pike, Downingtown, and at Shaw’s Bridge Park, 274 S. Creek Road, West Chester.

Since the event’s inception, volunteers have removed more than 30 tons of trash from the banks of the Brandywine River between Lenape and the Delaware state line. This year, the Brandywine Conservancy will team up with East Bradford Township and West Bradford Township for a neighborhood collaboration that will encompass the banks of the Brandywine along Shaw’s Bridge Park and Brandywine Meadows Preserve Trail.

Volunteers are advised to wear hats, long pants, heavy shoes or boots, and sunscreen.

Gloves and trash bags will be provided. The conservancy will provide lunch for all volunteers following the cleanup at noon.

Musical Seeks Cast Members Arts and Athletics Club, a Coatesville theater organization, is seeking cast members for its original musical “The Playground.”
