American Legion Celebrates 100th Anniversary By Francine Fulton
Ensuring that veterans receive their benefits, promoting patriotism and respect of the United States flag, and creating programs for youths are just some of the accomplishments of the American Legion, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The American Legion, formed by a group of World War I veterans, was chartered as a patriotic veterans organization in 1919. Locally, members of the American Legion Charles F. meeting and luncheon, attendees enjoyed a 100th anniversary cake that was served during the event. Following opening ceremonies, which included a prayer by chaplain Andrea Crudden and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, Glenn Gilbert, post commander, provided the keynote speech, titled “To Strengthen a Nation: The American Legion at 100.” In his speech, Gilbert explained that the American Legion founders had the idea for the organization while returning to the United States after serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris. “They had time to think about what they would do after discharge from service in support of their wounded comrades, to honor the fallen, to See American Legion pg 7
