Designer Bag Bingo To Benefit DHSE Post Prom

A designer bag bingo to help finance the cost of the Downingtown High School East (DHSE) post prom event will be held on Sunday, March 8, in the cafeteria at DHSE, located at 50 Devon Drive, Exton.

Doors will open at noon; bingo will start at 1 p.m. There will be 12 games, as well as a special 13th round to play.

There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets, and door prizes will be awarded after each game.

Beverages and snacks, including baked goods, will be for sale; attendees may also bring their own refreshments.

All proceeds will benefit the Downingtown East Post Prom Party.

Hephzibah Baptist Church is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year with a variety of special events, including musical concerts and church tours.

Activities will also be featured during the church’s traditional May Meeting event, set for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is looking for volunteer coaches for the spring session of Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE programs. The spring session will begin on Monday, March 9, and culminate with a 5K on Saturday, May 30.

GOTR focuses on building selfesteem and promoting emotional and physical health in young girls. STRIDE, which stands for Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character, was developed for boys in response to the successful GOTR program.

The 10-week programs teach youngsters healthy habits through running, games and lessons. Participants practice twice a week, generally after school, but coaches have an input on scheduling. The YMCA also provides training and a manual to help coaches with the curriculum.

Joy Fox was a first-time coach for Avon Grove Intermediate School’s GOTR program this past fall. She had no coaching experience and running was not her exercise of choice, but she participated at her nieces’ insistence. She enjoyed the experience so much she is returning for the spring.

“I feel the Girls on the Run program fills a huge need among elementary school-age girls,” Fox stated. “There are many coping and fitness programs for middle and high school girls, but elementary school is where it all starts these days. This program gives them confidence and has them thinking about their health at a critical time in their lives.”

In addition to connecting with the girls and watching them grow in confidence and help each other, Fox said she found they were helping her as well. They would challenge her to a race, and while coaches do not have to run, she did occasionally and found that her health was improving. And on a day when she was feeling overly stressed, a girl gave her a note that said, “Coach Joy, you are doing great!”

-volunteer-form. All YMCA coaches, both volunteers and employees, are required to have child abuse clearances.

GOTR and STRIDE are open to students in grades three to five.

There are also middle school programs for students in grades six to eight, with Heart and Sole for girls and STRIDE TOO for boys.

Among the schools participating in the programs this spring are Rainbow Elementary School in the Coatesville Area School District; Brandywine Wallace, Lionville, Pickering Valley, Shamona Creek and Springtown Manor elementary schools and the Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center in the Downingtown Area School District; Exton Elementary School in the West Chester Area School District; and Twin Valley Elementary Center in the Twin Valley School District.

Other program sites will include the Hearts in Hands Community Center in Honey Brook and the Lionville Community YMCA. Students who attend nonparticipating schools may register to participate at another school in their district where there is an opening.

The Chester County Girls on the Run 5K and Chester County YMCA STRIDE 5K Challenge will take place on May 30, beginning at 9 a.m. at the New Garden Airport in Toughkenamon.

Habitat Executive Director Resigns Habitat for Humanity of Chester County (HfHCC) and Charles L. Huston IV, executive director, have announced that Huston stepped down effective Dec. 31, 2019, after serving the organization for over 17 years. Huston joined the organization in 2002 and is one of the longest-serving executive directors of the Habitat International affiliates.

During his 17 years as executive director, Huston’s leadership and advocacy in the community helped increase the impact of HfHCC on the need for affordable housing in Chester County. During his tenure, Habitat volunteers and donors built more than 90 homes in partnership with families in need. HfHCC also opened a thrift shop in Caln Township called the

Habitat ReStore, which supports homebuilding efforts through its sales of new or gently used donated items. Huston also initiated a land bank by purchasing land as it became available for future home construction while the land was both available and affordable.

Outside of Chester County, Huston and his team led two trips to Louisiana to build three homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He also has worked with former President Jimmy Carter on his annual Carter Work Project in Los Angeles.

Dance Classes Slated At Museum

People will learn an assortment of formation dances at a series of Civil War Dance Classes, to be offered on Sundays, Feb. 23 and March 15, at the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.

Civil War Dance Classes will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 23 and March 15, at the National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg.

The classes will be conducted by members of the Victorian Dance Ensemble, the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation (CWDF).

The CWDF is a nonprofit organization that entertains and educates through demonstrations, balls, and other activities.

All proceeds from CWDF events are donated to historic preservation projects.

Participants will learn an assortment of formation dances from the very simple to more complex dances. CWDF members will be on hand to help with dance instruction and to answer questions about the civilian side of the Civil War and the Victorian era. This spring’s dance classes are scheduled to

prepare dancers for the 17th annual Civil War Preservation Ball, to be held in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg on Saturday, March 28. Classes are ideal for re-enactors, historic site docents, teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone interested in vintage dancing.

People may attend one class or both. They may attend alone or bring a partner. Families are welcome. Everyday attire and comfortable shoes are suggested.

“This is a momentous year,” said Haag. “Most years we mark the anniversary on the third weekend in May during our May Meeting. This year, we decided to spread (the celebration) over a whole year.”

As part of the yearlong observance, the old church building, built in 1900, will be open on the first Saturday of each month, beginning on March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Tours will run through November. The original stone building is located next to the current church, which was built in 1987.

Visitors will have an opportunity to view the church’s colorful stained-glass windows, original curved wooden pews and pipe organ. “I will be there, and people can ask questions about the history,” said Haag, noting that the tours are free and open to the public.

The old church is no longer in use, but Haag would like to see that change. “A lot of people have come through the years and said it is a beautiful old chapel,” he stated. “Even though (the building is not heated), we had a wedding there in November, because the groom’s parents got married there.”

Additionally, a series of

concerts have been planned. A handbell choir from Cairn University will perform on Sunday, March 29; the Lincoln University Gospel Choir will perform on Sunday, April 26; and singer Kevin Pierce will perform on Sunday, June 21. The handbell choir will perform at 6:30 p.m.

The other concerts will begin at 7 p.m. The events are open to the public; a freewill offering will be received.

During the May Meeting weekend, additional events have been planned along with the traditional covered dish lunch.

“A former pastor who was on hand at the 250th anniversary Arthur McCauley - who is close to 80 now, will preach on that Sunday morning,” Haag noted.

“He was the pastor here from 1966 to 1974.”

The May Meeting generally revolves around the theme “God and Country.” “On May Meeting weekend, we always have a graveside service,” Haag pointed out. “We select someone who is a member of the church who died while serving in the military and we have a little service in the cemetery. We make note of the fact that we practice our faith because of our freedom.”

According to Haag, Hephzibah Baptist Church was founded in 1720 and the first meetinghouse

Mock Trial Competition Underway was dedicated in 1793. “Down Strasburg Road about 3 miles from here after you cross over the Brandywine, you are in Newlin Township in a place called Laurel. That is where the original church was. They were there from 1720 to 1792,” Haag explained. “The meetinghouse is not there, but there is a cemetery there, which we still own.”

At that time, he added, Hephzibah was chosen as the new name of the church. The name, which means “My Delight is in Thee,” comes from the Book of Isaiah.

Upcoming anniversary plans also include a history tour, which would include stops at other churches that had their roots at Hephzibah, including Brandywine Baptist Church in Chadds Ford. “Hephzibah, as a mother church, helped to start other churches (including) Beulah Baptist in Russellville, which is still in existence, and Glen Run Church on Route 41; all that’s left is a cemetery,” Haag said.

A total of 285 teams from 235 high schools across Pennsylvania are competing in district and regional levels of the Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 37th year.

During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for the competition. Lawyers and

community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.

The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. Then, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Harrisburg. The winning team will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals, which are scheduled for Wednesday to Saturday, May 6 to 9, in Evansville, Ind.

The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the PBA, is providing funding support for the statewide competition. Serving as cochairs of the Mock Trial Executive Committee are Young Lawyers Division chair Jennifer Menichini of Pittston and former Young Lawyers Division chair Jonathan D. Koltash of Harrisburg.

Winter Safety Tips Posted Winter brings snow, ice and freezing rain, so readers are encouraged to heed the following winter safety tips.

First, icy patches can be difficult to see. The slips and falls caused by ice can be serious. If one comes across an area believed to be icy, he or she should tap the edge of the area with a foot. People should wear shoes with gripping soles to provide traction. Also, they should keep hands out of their pockets when walking in order to keep balance on a slippery surface. They should avoid carrying heavy

items like shopping bags, which can change one’s center of balance, making it easier to slip and fall.

Also, shoveling snow can pose a health risk for many people. Snow shoveling is a strenuous activity. It can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Individuals with a history of heart disease, high blood pressure or strokes should not shovel snow. If people must shovel snow, they should shovel as early as possible, as snow is heavier after it has been on the ground for a few days, often melting and refreezing, creating a solid

chunk of snow rather than powdery, just-fallen snow.

In addition, individuals should stay hydrated. Dehydration is common during the winter months. Winter activities are just as strenuous as summer activities, and people also tend to wear layers of warm clothing during the winter, meaning that the body works harder by sweating to cool down. Not staying hydrated can lead to exhaustion, muscle fatigue, cramps, loss of coordination or even stroke. Dehydration also makes one an easy target for colds and flu.

they are in the eyes of God, they can then go out and serve the world and use their feet - symbolically speaking - to step into their purpose in serving the world in the name of Christ.”

The getaway weekend is open not only to women who attend Calvary Fellowship, but to women from the community. Organizers include church members Angel Omoruan, Beth Dyas and Lindsay Sterious. “It’s for women who want to grow deeper with their relationship with the Lord and one another,” Rousselle said. “It’s unusual for women to spend time away from their responsibilities to renew and refresh themselves.”

This is the church’s third women’s conference, but it is the first time that the event is being held at a location other than the church. “We’re looking at holding a large conference locally at church with 400 to 500 people and doing a smaller getaway retreat where we are taking less women but going much deeper into fellowship and teaching,” Rousselle explained.

“We’re hoping to alternate years in the future.”

Attendees will be able to choose three of the nine available sessions, with the option to get all nine workshop sessions on audio file. The optional activities will include prayer walking, fitness classes, late-night conversations and one-on-one prayer times.

One of the workshops is titled “Who Am I? Loved, Validated and Trusted: God’s Promises to Me.” This workshop will focus on discovering what God has to say and why His opinion matters. Women will also learn key Bible passages to

The “Self-Care: Balance Panel” lesson will focus on simple solutions on how women can balance exercise, religion, household tasks, children, marriage and their career. Another workshop, “Love One Another,” will focus on the topic by studying several Bible passages in creative ways.

“Spiritual Gifts” will help attendees learn how to identify and then nurture their God-given spiritual gifts.

Remaining workshops will include “Discipleship 101”; “Prayer and Intercession”; “Boundaries,” which will focus on healthy boundaries in relationships; and a “Serving Panel” session, where women will learn ways to work in the community.

The final session will be a teen panel open to girls age 12 and over. Wiggenhorn and Rousselle are both attending the conference with their 15-year-old daughters. “ We have a lot of mother-daughter couples that are coming and some teenagers coming on their own,” Rousselle said.

The Aleithia Players, a group of homeschooled students from Chester, Berks and Lancaster counties, will present Pat Cook’s “Clockwork” at Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church, located at 1648 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Glenmoore.

Dessert theater performances will be held on Thursday, Feb. 27, and Friday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m.

There will also be two open admission performances on Saturday, Feb. 29. The matinee will begin at 2 p.m., and the evening performance will begin at 7 p.m.

During the dessert theater, audience members will be able to choose from items on the dessert menu, including chocolate cake, cheesecake and cookies. Hot chocolate and coffee will be among the beverage options. The desserts will be served by cast members during intermission.

“There are two casts, and the cast that is not performing that night will be the servers,” explained parent mentor Christine Jones.

In past years, high school students from Aleithia have performed “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Les Misérables,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” “Pride and Prejudice” and “An Ideal Husband,” among oth-

ers. This year, director Hannah Keeler chose a lesser-known play.

“They have done classics in years past and decided to try something fun and a little lighthearted, so they went in this direction,” said Jones.

“Clockwork” tells the story of the Dunwoody clan, a rich family with members who are picked off one by one. Their deaths are marked by the strikes of an old grandfather clock, which hasn’t worked in years. The hope is for audiences to be kept guessing until the end.

Jones said that the students have enjoyed rehearsing for the play and were challenged by some of the language. “There is a Southern dialect, so they are getting used to it,” she explained. “It was kind of new to everyone.” She noted that the students were able to watch a video of the play being performed at another high school while preparing for their roles.

The cast members auditioned for their parts and started rehearsing in January at Camp Sankanac in Spring City, where the homeschoolers meet for educational programs. “The week before the play they are at the church (rehearsing),” Jones pointed out.

WCU Earns Certification In Online Teaching Support West Chester University (WCU) has become one of only five institutions nationwide to obtain Quality Matters (QM) Program Certification for Online Teaching Support.

The institution-level QM Online Teaching Support certification requires all online faculty members to undergo training in best practices for online course delivery, provide faculty with ongoing pedagogical support, encourage faculty professional development to increase their knowledge and skill in online teaching, emphasize instructor availability and feedback to learners and collect and use feedback from learners to improve online teaching. Certification is based on these five criteria and three years of data.

Additionally, 19 WCU courses have obtained QM course certification. This certification requires the course itself to meet eight general standards and 42 specific review standards. Of WCU’s 19 total QM-certified courses, 14 are graduate level.

Rui Li, executive director of WCU’s Office of Distance Education, pointed out that some content areas are more suitable than others for online delivery and “successful online/blended teaching requires a significant course transformation.” Facilitating that transformation is Li’s Instructional Technology team, which includes four instructional designers, a learning technology specialist and two online support

specialists.

This spring, there are 130 classes offered 100% online, more than 60 classes offered in blended mode (between 30 and 79% online) and four that offer 80% or more online instruction.

Most are upper-level, but there are also introductory/first-yearlevel courses in many subjects such as art history, communication studies/disorders, meteorology, music history, political science, statistics, writing and others.

The next goal, Li said, is QM certification in Online Learner Support, which recognizes programs that provide the student and academic services needed for learner success and use learner feedback to continuously improve those services.

Other pieces included discs, spheres and conical shapes, all with elaborate designs. The pieces will be mounted to metal rods and brought together to form the final sculpture.

As a small part of the larger work, kindergartners made impressions in clay discs. Students got creative with their impressions, using found objects, including their shoes. They used words including “games,” “science lab,” “cool gadgets” and “spaceships” to describe how the sculpture made them feel.

Kahler is a ceramic artist with a studio in West Chester. Her work has been featured internationally, nationally and regionally in magazines, newspapers and television, including on the Home and Garden Television network (HGTV) and in Crave Magazine. Kahler exhibits in galleries, and her large-scale handmade tile murals and sculptures appear in public and private collections. Notable commissions include the Delaware Art Museum, West Chester University and the Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival. Kahler conducts workshops nationally and participates in a wide range of artist residencies, some of which are the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Inglis House. West Bradford Elementary kindergarten students have collaborated with local artist Rhoda Kahler to create a new art installment at the school. Since the start of the 2019-20 school year, Kahler has served as the artistin-residence in Mary Frances Giunta’s art room at West Bradford. She has taught students from across the district about the artistic process, and together, they have worked to build the new sculpture.

Giunta and Downingtown High School West art teacher Anne Russell were looking for opportunities to bring students from the high school and elementary school together. They brought in Kahler to help facilitate, and they applied for and won a Downingtown Community Education Foundation (DCEF) grant.

DCEF was founded to identify, promote and support innovative educational initiatives for the students in Downingtown Area School District (DASD) and to expand and enrich public education. Its grants support programs, projects, services and other activities that emphasize new approaches to teaching. As of September 2019, DCEF had awarded more than $135,000 in DASD teacher grants.

Recently, the James Lee and Annanette Harper Family Foundation gifted DCEF with funds dedicated to support the arts, culture and humanities.

The DCEF grant supports the work of Kahler, a resident of West Bradford who is her time to support the project. Kahler hopes that the piece will remind the students of the special experiences they had and the topics they learned about in school.

Located in the corridor beside the Main Exhibit Hall, the display consists of 108 wooden quilt blocks that were created by Pennsylvania Grange members to showcase the heritage of quilting through design and patterns.

A scavenger hunt was available during the annual Farm Show. Members of the public may try the scavenger hunt any time the building is open, and materials are available at www.pagrange.org.

The Pennsylvania State Grange Heritage Quilt Trail’s mission is to celebrate and promote the culture, heritage, and viability of the Pennsylvania State Grange by placing quilt blocks on Grange Halls and other suitable buildings throughout the commonwealth. The Grange Heritage Quilt Trail committee is working on expansion across Pennsylvania by partnering with organizations, businesses, and others in being part of the trail.

Women are invited to register for “Launch Your Career Comeback,” a 10-week workshop that will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 25 through April 28, at Delaware County Community College’s Marple Campus, 901 S. Participants will receive support, personal attention and a structured approach to career planning and decision-making.

The workshop will be facilitated by Susan Miller, a counselor in the college’s Career and Counseling Center, and Peggy Schils, a licensed professional counselor in the Career and Counseling Center. For the third consecutive year, students from Bishop Shanahan High School (BSHS) in Downingtown won the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Regional Competition, held at the Chester County Intermediate Unit - Brandywine Campus.

The annual STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) competition challenges teams to answer needs of Pennsylvanians while also exploring STEM careers and developing communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills. This year’s theme was “Improving Pennsylvania Through STEM.” The winning team’s device will now advance to the state championship in Harrisburg.

The BSHS team developed Emergency Location Indexing Application System (ELIAS), a device that will decrease the response time for emergency personnel to locate vulnerable individuals during emergencies.

HCA Receives Grant Award Health Care Access (HCA) was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Milton Apfelbaum Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation. The grant enables HCA to allot additional staff and resources to its Immigration Services Program (ISP), which assists residents with immigration questions and provides advice and counsel.

HCA is recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Executive Office of Immigration Review to provide low-cost legal assistance by an accredited staff member. To be recognized, an organization must establish that it charges only nominal fees, and the accredited staff member must have adequate knowledge and experience in immigration law and procedure, and complete many hours of intensive training.

The ISP assists with immigration applications and petitions that will be filed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. It also provides additional resources if the case goes beyond its expertise or requires representation in an immigration court.
