Artist Adrian Martinez To Present Lecture At HYS

Internationally known artist Adrian Martinez will present a lecture, titled “Adrian Martinez - From the White House to Historic Yellow Springs - An Artistic Journey,” on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of the Lincoln Building in Historic Yellow Springs (HYS), 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs.

The program will be the first in a new art lecture series being planned at HYS. Martinez explained that when he was first invited to present the l e c ture, he agreed to discuss his artwork, including how he created art for the White House, working with President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. After meeting with HYS executive director Karen Walter and the board of directors, however, he

decided to tailor his traditional lecture to show parallels between the phases of his life and the history of HYS. “ We just mutually saw how this would become a much more specific-tothe-situation kind of lecture,” he said.

“They were inspiring to me.”

Martinez said that his life experiences have been diverse, noting that the village of HYS also has been utilized for different purposes throughout history. HYS was once a spa village where people bathed in the yellow springs. During the American R e v o l u tion, George Washington commissioned a hospital to be built in the village. HYS was also home to the Chester Springs Soldiers’ Orphan School, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Country School and Good News Productions, a film studio.

The Chester County Board of Commissioners, through the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, will offer free Certified Master Composting Classes on Thursdays, March 7, 14, and 21. Classes will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. in the second-floor Struble Room at the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. Classes will end at 8:30 p.m. Attendance all three weeks is required to become certified.

The next session of GriefShare, a support group for those who have lost a loved one, will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg. Meetings will be held every Tuesday through May 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. The meetings are facilitated by Paul and Twila Ranck.

GriefShare is a nondenominational group that features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Session topics include “Challenges of Grief,” “What Do I Live for Now?” and “Heaven.”

The topic for the opening meeting will be “Is This Normal?”

Each session, which is held in The Venue meeting area in the church, begins with light snacks and beverages, including coffee and tea. Attendees then watch a DVD that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss.

“We view a video that’s about 35 to 40 minutes long, and then we gather into small groups and discuss what we have seen on the video,” Paul explained. “We talk about some of our (challenges) and some of our blessings.” He noted that a special breakout session will be offered for teenagers age 14 and over.

“The videos are very instructional as well,” he added. “There

are people (featured on the video) who have been through a loss, and there are counselors and pastors as well who may not have lost someone but have some input.”

Each participant receives a workbook that features a section for taking notes on each video as well as daily Scripture readings.

Following the breakout sessions, the group comes together for closing comments and a prayer before the meeting ends.

GriefShare is to those who have experienced a recent loss, as well as those who have been grieving for years. “It can be a recent (death) or someone who has lost a loved one 20 years ago. There is no limit,” Paul noted, adding that participants have ranged in age from their 20s to their 60s.

People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained; participants do not have to attend in sequence.

Some people repeat the entire course or just the sessions that deal with a particular topic.

Also, people grieving a recent loss are welcome to attend the program again after some time has passed.

“There is lots of encouragement,” Paul said. “Someone may be struggling with something

and someone else has something that works for them, so it is very helpful. We know it is difficult to make that step to come in because they are already struggling. What we hear a lot is that when they do come in, it is a place to share and be one with everyone else and a place to find a friend. It won’t be exactly the same (grief experience that others have) but similar.”

Paul pointed out that at times, friendship groups that form during the sessions continue outside of GriefShare. “It’s (about) people helping each other and finding that support,” he said. “It really becomes a family. When the 13 weeks are done, it’s exciting to see smiles on people’s faces and the friends they’ve made. You really bond in those small groups.”

“Spring Frog Songs” will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Green Valleys Watershed Association at Welkinweir, 1368 Prizer Road, Pottstown, in the Education Barn. Attendees will learn the basics of identifying frogs and toads by sight and by their calls.

Then they will practice their identification skills on a walk around Welkinweir’s ponds. Participants will also create a toad abode to take home and place in their yards.

This program is designed for participants age 6 to adult. No experience is necessary. Attendees should dress for the season, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight.

Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell, who first brought the idea of the Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge to Chester County, cited various benefits of walking, such as improving mental health, reducing chronic disease risks and burning calories.

One of the key components of the WalkWorks ChesCo! program is the specially designed website that tallies all steps taken by residents who register to participate. The website, www.chesco.org/walkworks, syncs with most devices and mobile apps that already track steps, and it also allows users to convert other physical exercise into steps to be manually added.

According to Commissioner Michelle Kichline, more physical activities have been added to the website so that everyone registered can convert more activities into steps. These include swimming, weight lifting, yoga, aerobics

fitness classes, circuit training, dancing, and horseback riding.

Casner hopes that participants reach 5 billion steps by April, when the next phase of the challenge will be launched.

In planning for the next phase of the challenge, participants in WalkWorks ChesCo! are encouraged to give feedback through a short survey that can be found on the WalkWorks web page. SALT Performing Arts will present “Les Misérables School Edition” on Thursdays through Sundays, from Feb. 14 to 24 The musical features a cast of performers under the age of 18.

At their recent Sunshine Meeting public work session, the Chester County commissioners received an update from Chester County Health Department director Jeanne Casner announcing a milestone in the WalkWorks ChesCo! challenge. Since the launch of WalkWorks in April 2017, Chester County residents have registered more than 4 billion steps in the program.

WalkWorks ChesCo! is a program that aims to promote, educate and empower county residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle one step at a time by creating more places for walking, supporting and promoting walking groups, coordinating walking challenges and creating a website that allows everyone to track and tally their steps. What began as the county’s response to the national Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge has grown into a program that engages county residents of all ages and that has been replicated by communities in other states.

Winner of over 100 international awards, “Les Misérables,” known as “Les Mis,” recognized as the world’s longest-running musical, is based on the 1862 novel of the same name by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, which premiered in London in 1985. The School Edition has been abridged to a running time of just over two hours.

Set in early 19th-century France, “Les Misérables” is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant. After being imprisoned for 19 years as the result of stealing a loaf of bread in order to feed his sister’s starving child, Valjean had his life changed by the forgiveness of a priest. Valjean then attempts to create a new, respectable life for himself, eventually adopting a daughter, Cosette.

Over the years, he is pursued by Inspector Javert, who is determined to send him back to prison. Through their encounters, Valjean is forced to decide what kind of man he truly is.

Water Stewards from pg 1 This spring, Green Valleys Watershed Association will hold a Schuylkill Water Stewards training to prepare citizens to become volunteers and assist in monitoring and protecting local waterways, including French, Hay, and Pickering creeks, all of which are tributaries to the Schuylkill River.

Each student will participate in training sessions that will teach the science of a healthy watershed, threats to local streams, water sampling techniques, and more. Training sessions will take

place on five Saturdays for four hours each and will include a combination of in-class and field time.

Once the training is complete, participants will help monitor and protect area streams following the procedures learned in the class. By participating, they will play a vital role in a multi-state, science-based effort focused on the protection and restoration of the Delaware River Watershed.

The Schuylkill River is the largest tributary to the Delaware.

“We called the warehouse to tell them we were bringing shoes, and they arranged a time,” she said. “We drove them in two trips. It’s a really wellsupported nonprofit. I was shocked when I saw all the shoes in the warehouse.”

According to www.soles4 souls.org, the nonprofit organization collects all types of new and gently worn shoes, including athletic, running and dress shoes, as well as sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance shoes and flip-flops.

The idea to hold the shoe drive came from Sandra Simmons, Coatesville Rotary Club president, who learned about Soles4Souls after attending a Rotary International Convention held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in June of 2018.

“At the convention, they have a number of projects that Rotary is involved in, and you can decide which ones you want do,” Simmons explained. “I came back and told the club that I would like to do this project because it would benefit the environment - keeping shoes from ending up in the (landfill) - and the people that Soles4Souls gives shoes to. It was a win-win project.”

After participating in a phone interview, she learned in June that she was accepted to become part of the challenge after competing against thousands of other women who applied from across the country. The other four candidates, who are from California, Illinois, South Carolina and Tennessee, are between the ages of 31 and 64.

Hoffman said that after being accepted in the program, she took part in a conference call

candidates. “She gave us recipes, ideas and (basic information) about good things to eat that were so simple,” said Hoffman.

“She started by (suggesting) that we take 10,000 steps a day for exercise.”

Hoffman conferenced with Bauer regularly over the phone and was assigned a nutritionist and mentor. She also received advice from Dr. Jennifer Mieres and Dr. Stacey Rosen, authors of “Heart Smart For Women,” who discussed nutrition information and stressed the importance of getting a good night’s sleep.

Although Hoffman has lost 26 pounds since the challenge started, she said the program is more about getting healthy. “They don’t focus on losing weight; it’s really about heart health,” she explained. “Weight is a measurable thing, but since June, I have been taken off cholesterol medicine and off diabetic medication and my blood pressure medicine was (reduced).”

The culmination of the challenge was the 16th annual Red Dress awards ceremony in New York City, scheduled for Feb. 12.

“We had a photo shoot in New York in November for the magazine, and we got our hair and makeup done,” Hoffman said, noting that the candidates were provided with red dresses to wear to the ceremony.

Hoffman credits the staff members at the Lionville YMCA for helping her to enjoy exercise, including Meghan Gelb, the spin class instructor, and Leanna Pacinelli, a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. “I took a spin class with my husband, and now I go twice a week for an hour. It’s a great class,” said Hoffman. “(Meghan) recommended Lift It, a weightlifting class, and I take that three times a week with Leanna. I never enjoyed exercise, but now I really look forward to going.”

Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.” Requiring no baking at all, it can be an easy treat to prepare.

Tiramisu (Yield: 9 servings) 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese 1 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 (12-ounce) packages savoiardi lady fingers 1/2 cup cold espresso or strong coffee 1/4 cup coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 1 tablespoon cocoa for dusting Instructions: 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored. Add mascarpone to whipped yolks and beat until combined.

2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream in the mascarpone-sabayon mixture and set aside.

3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches).

Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers.

4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

Dust with cocoa before serving.

Try this recipe for Chocolate Avocado-Chia Pudding from the American Heart Association, which gets a healthy boost from creamy avocado and chia seeds.

Chocolate Avocado-Chia Pudding (Makes six 1/2-cup servings) 2 medium ripe avocados, peeled and pitted

1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk 1/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder 1/4 cup fat-free plain Greek yogurt 3 Medjool dates, pitted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons chia seeds 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted chopped almonds or walnuts (optional) Instructions: 1- In a food processor or blender, process all the ingredients except the almonds until smooth.

2 - Transfer the pudding to serving dishes.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the chia seeds to thicken.

Cavod To Produce “The Secret Garden”

According to Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical “The Secret Garden” at Cavod Theatre, the show is much loved among actors because of the strength of the musical score.

“The music is so powerful it is like its own character,” remarked DePaul. “The music tells the story so well.”

Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, said he had been waiting for an opportunity to

do the show since he first heard the music in high school. “As soon as (DePaul) mentioned (‘The Secret Garden’), I was on board,” said Huyard. “I love the music.”

cholera in India, she is sent to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald Craven, played by Alexander Weaver, and his brother Dr. Neville Craven, played by Dan Lawback, in a secluded British manor.

Upon arriving, Mary finds that the her uncle is still grieving the loss of her Aunt Lily, played

by Alicia Burton. Lily, Archibald’s late wife, had died giving birth to their bedridden son, Colin, played by Lincoln Everett. Colin, who feels guilty about his mother’s death, is hidden in a room inside the manor, which Archibald only visits when the boy is sleeping.

Mary also discovers her Aunt Lily’s garden, which is locked up and overgrown with vines. She and her friends Dickon, played

by Joseph Kelly, and Martha, played by Lauren Groff, are determined to revive the garden and the house as well.

Because of the sobering subject matter of the drama, DePaul said that it has been challenging to stage the show without letting the presentation become too dark. “To pursue the direction we wanted to go without changing lyrics or lines, (we have been) instilling in the cast that this is about searching for God and trying to figure out what is blessing them,” said DePaul, who noted that symbolism and other

techniques will be employed to lighten the mood and find joy even in the face of death.

Both DePaul and Huyard are excited to be working with the musical cast in bringing the show’s score to life. “They are well balanced and great musicians,” said Huyard. “I think people will be very impressed with the music coming out of this cast.”

DePaul noted that one of her favorite numbers is “Lily’s Eyes.” “(The song) is this beautiful duet sung by Weaver and Lawback, who play the Craven brothers,” she said, adding that “A Bit of Earth” is another standout musical selection.

The message of the show, according to DePaul, focuses on love. “Love is life,” she noted.

“Without love, we have nothing.”

Huyard agreed, calling the garden Mary discovers a metaphor for bringing love back to a dark and desolate place. “(Mary) loses her family, and she comes into her uncle’s life,” he said. “He’s living in a very dark place, and she brings life back into her uncle’s home.”

Adrian Martinez from pg 1 “I saw some art shows (in Historic Yellow Springs), but I never realized it was actually a place with consecutive phases that are discontinuous; they start and stop,” said Martinez, noting that in addition to art, his career has included working in the theater, at a museum and in horticulture.

“There is an analogy between my art career and the history of Yellow Springs. We are at a crossroads, (having) wound up at the same place at the same time.”

Both artists and non-artists are invited to attend the upcoming lecture, which will feature a PowerPoint presentation of Martinez’s paintings and a questionand-answer session. “It will be a lively presentation. It will be a theatrical presentation as well,” said Martinez. “The PowerPoint presentation will be mostly of my work. Those pictures - they are me. I am what I do.”

He said one of his goals is to introduce people to HYS, particularly those who have never visited in the past. “I am trying to bring people to Yellow Springs.

(The lecture will be) my vision and the vision of Historic Yellow Springs,” Martinez commented.

“The lecture was going to be me talking about art, but now that we have this connection, I will

also be looking into the 21st century for both of us - me and my work and Historic Yellow Springs.”

Martinez, an artist, teacher and lecturer, was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Washington. He received degrees from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Md.; St. Martins School of Art in London, England; and Purdue University in Indiana. His work has been exhibited in New York; Pennsylvania; Turkey; Texas; Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Delaware; Indiana; California; and London, England.

In 2007, President Bush and Laura Bush commissioned him to paint two large landscapes commemorating the “National Parks” theme for the White House holiday season. The two works are now installed in the George W. Bush Presidential Library.
