Chester Springs Library, 1709 Art School Road, Chester Springs, will host master bluebirder Ken Leister as he presents an informative program on bluebirds on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m. He will talk about their protection, enjoyment and propagation, and he will discuss what makes a good nest box for bluebirds. Attendees will be entered in a drawing to win a bluebird nest box that Leister personally built. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. The guest speaker will be Terence Maguire, board member and vice president of the Kennett Underground Railroad Center and a retired teacher at Wilmington Friends School. Volunteers Fill Backpacks On MLK Day Of Service By Francine Fulton
Local residents joined others nationwide who took part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 21. In Coatesville, volunteers gathered at the W.C. Atkinson Memorial Community Service Center to pack backpacks full of personal care products and supplies that were delivered to residents of area homeless shelters. The volunteers who worked at the center throughout the day included representatives from the Brandywine Health Foundation, the Coatesville Rotary Club, Coatesville Cub Scout Pack 134, students and staff members from area high schools, members of local churches and others. Together, the volunteers packed more than 230 backpacks. “We were blessed with an excellent attendance; there were 107 volunteers in four shifts,” explained Minnie

1400 Olive St., Coatesville, is offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Students may enroll throughout the semester on any Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. There is a one-time fee for a textbook, which the student can take with him or her. Central Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downingtown, will hold its monthly community luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chili and chicken corn noodle, vegetable beef, and cream of potato soups will be sold along with sandwiches, salad platters, homemade desserts, and beverages. U.S. Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, her spouse and staff came right in the door ready to work.” The volunteers worked in various areas on two floors of the center, including prep and staging; packing the backpacks; counting and boxing; and distributing. The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a nonprofit organization that helps create educational and employment opportunities for people in need throughout the county, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 21 to celebrate the grand opening of its new headquarters, located at 22 N. Fifth Ave., Coatesville, the former home of the Coatesville Area Senior Center. In November 2018, Chester County OIC, previously located in West Chester, received a $300,000 Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to help purchase the location. The grant was presented by Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell.
