GRIEF SEMINAR

Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, will offer a Loss of a Spouse seminar on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. There will be a brief video followed by a small group discussion. Participants will receive a booklet for taking notes, devotional materials, grief recovery exercises, and journaling prompts. Persons who have lost a spouse through death are invited to attend. Nantmeal United Methodist Church, 359 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore, will hold its monthly community luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. The menu will include homemade vegetable soup, hot dogs, dessert, and beverages. The meal is free. In the case of inclement weather, the luncheon will be canceled. SERMON SERIES

Compeer Chester County Names New Program Director By Francine Fulton

While people in recovery from a mental illness are treated by professionals and various therapies, they may lack the support of personal friends. Helping to fill that gap is Compeer

Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “We want to add friendship therapy to a person’s life,” said Donna Kueny, who was named the new Compeer Chester County program director on Dec. 17. “Both people benefit from that. Most people are familiar with an Advent calendar, which is used to count down the days to Christmas. As part of the tradition on each day of December until Christmas, a door or window is opened on a paper calendar to reveal a prize, a Bible verse or a piece of chocolate, among other items. At Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown, the congregation recently took part in a Reverse Advent Calendar (RAC) program by collecting nonperishable food items during the four weeks preceding Christmas. The donations were collected to benefit the Lord’s Pantry of See Food Donations pg 7

Gateway To Host Men’s Breakfast

Last year’s men’s breakfast offered by Gateway Church featured a talk by Col. George Youstra (above). The guest speaker at this year’s event, to be held on Jan. 19, will be author Jason Ranck (inset). Gateway Church will hold a men’s breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 a.m. at the Parkesburg campus, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg. All men from the community are invited to attend and to hear guest speaker Jason Ranck, author of “Life Reimagined:

will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 9:30 a.m. at the Goshen Fire Company, 1320 Park Ave., West Chester. The guild will hold its annual all-day Sew-In of Charity Quilts by creating quilts for children and veterans. Children’s fabrics or red, white, and blue fabrics may be donated on that day. As this month’s charity project, all quilts will be donated to the Chester County Center for Domestic Violence and to area veterans. The guild meets each month and in addition to the program has a Block of the Month, a show-and-tell, and more. The regular guest fee will be waived for the upcoming meeting.
