A community hub is coming together at 15 S. Third St. in Columbia. That’s the location of the Columbia Market House, set to open in May 2021. The market is a joint project between CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and Columbia Borough.

“Construction began on the site in October 2019,” said Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager for CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health.

“We’ve been in talks with the borough since 2018.”

The idea for the market fits nicely with CHI St. Joseph’s Healthy Columbia initiative, which is part of the organization’s strategy to create a healthy community, Miller said. “We wanted to offer the people of Columbia a place to get locally grown produce, baked goods and other fresh foods,” she explained.

The Columbia Market House will have room for about 20 vendors inside, along with an outdoor market area and space for events. CHI St. Joseph is in talks with Gypsy Kitchen, a Lancasterbased restaurant, for a fullservice restaurant on site as well. “The building is designed to be a flexible space and is being intentionally built that way, so we have lots of options,” Miller said.

She noted that the market building dates to 1869, and the new project is a way to bring back a once-thriving spot in Columbia.

“When this was built 150 years ago, the market was a gathering place for the community and a place for people to access local goods,” she stated. “Just like in the past, it doesn’t matter what your background is or who you are; everyone will be welcome at the market.”

Student Poetry Contest Slated York County Libraries is seeking entries for its 32nd annual “A Celebration of Poetry” contest. The contest is open to students in York and Adams counties in grades one through 12.

Interested youths can submit one original poem through Friday, Jan. 29, 2021.

The 2020 Writer’s Eye Literary Competition is officially open. Students in grades four through 12, college students, and adults are invited to select a piece of artwork from Creative York’s “Hope and Resilience” exhibit and write a poem or short story in response.

On New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

“Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.”

Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions.

“The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a

trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and prepaid phone cards.”

The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event.

From April to October, the church added 35 adult members and doubled the size of The Current, its youth ministry. When the doors reopened at 365 Orange St. in June, the church followed COVID-19 protocols and continued to see attendance increase.

“After several consecutive weeks of adding more chairs to the sanctuary, we decided that the best way to continue practicing social distancing as we move into the holiday season would be to add a third service time,” McNatt noted.

The church will also continue to offer an online service as a fourth option.

“We are seeing a renewed appreciation for community engagement like never before,” McNatt remarked. “If anything good came out of being quarantined this summer, I think that’s a big part of it. We all value our relationships a little
