Shopping small this holiday season BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Columbia will present “The Right Now” arlier this year, Columbia High School drama director Janet Wood gave her students several plays to check out as a possible selection for the school’s fall play. One stood out “The Right Now,” written by Andrew Geha. “We really clicked with this one,” said senior Carly VanBuren, who portrays Saicha in the play. “That was the first time I ever read this play, and I was like, ‘Ooh! I like this.’ I like the storyline, and also, I really love romance.” “The Right Now” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday,

Nov. 18, at Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike. The show features a cast of 19 and centers around a group of high school students. “It’s a love story, but I’m an angsty teen,” explained Nyck Price, a senior who plays Asher. “I’m a troublemaker in school, and I have a girlfriend named Saicha, and I’m obsessed with her. I created a problem, and I stayed in that problem for a really long time, and that’s what the show is about.” Alexymahr Whitley, a junior who plays Lt. Kinnerman, said the show features both serious and humorous parts, and it has a sci-fi twist. “ We can’t give too much away, but I will say that

throwing it onto the stage.” Like real life, what the teens go through in the play has its ups and downs, said Alexymahr. “Teens are a conglomerate of emotions, so you’ll see characters flip-flop in how they feel about a situation,” he said. “It can get confusing, but in a good way.” Carly cautions that audiences should be prepared to see a show that’s perhaps different from what they are used to. “If people want to go on a rollercoaster of emotions, definitely come see this,” she commented. “It will be confusing at first, but then they’ll leave, and they’ll be like, ‘Wow! What did I just watch? That was amazing.’”

Small businesses are at the heart of local communities. Saint Paul Episcopal Church and Columbia Historic Preservation Society will hold a benefit concert featuring authentic Civil War-era music presented by Beck’s Philadelphia Brigade Band, known as Beck’s Band. The concert will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Saint Paul Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., Columbia. Beck’s Band is a Civil Warera-style brass band portraying the brass band of the 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, 2nd Brigade of the Union Army of the Potomac in 1863. Get in the holiday spirit, pick up some decorating inspiration and take a peek inside Marietta homes during the Marietta Candlelight Tour. The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Eight private homes and various historic buildings will be featured on the tour. “The homes are all varied in style again this year,” said Jason Spickler, co-chair of the tour committee. “Many of the homes have been on our tour in the past, but with new owners, guests can expect to see new decorating styles and renovations to some of the houses that they may have seen in past years.” Homes on the tour include 574 W. Market St., a house built around 1869 on land that was previously an apple orchard. Unique features of the home include the original kitchen sink cabinetry and pantry that has been relocated to the dining room and a hutch that dates to 1875. The home will be decorated in natural materials. At 276 W. Market St., a home built in 1872 will be

highlighted. It is typical of the brick and frame homes constructed in Marietta in the period of prosperity following the Civil War. Interior features on the tour will include collections of cut glass, Quimper ware and hat pins. “Many of the businesses and organizations in town are doing special events that coincide with the tour,” Spickler noted. “From restaurant specials and store displays to carriage rides, holiday shopping and special entertainment, this is another way that our town comes together to make this event special for those coming to visit Marietta for the tour.” Proceeds from the tour will benefit the Marietta Restoration Associates and will be used to continue the restoration and preservation of the town. “The annual candlelight tour has become a town event,” Spickler shared. “In addition to the homes that are featured on the tour, I would say that almost everyone in town gets in on the fun by decorating their home exteriors so that the whole

atmosphere. “Have you ever seen someone who has no hope?” said Gustavo Valdez, president of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, one of the participating nonprofits. “That is a person who has no future, no way out. Hope is a way to tell people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. With hope, there’s a reason for tomorrow.” Perhaps the best ways to describe the gifts that will be available at GTGH’s fair are environmentally friendly, ethically sourced and meaningful. There are tuitions, mentorship programs, books, therapeutic camps and charitable donations that can be purchased in someone’s name. It takes the concept of

being more blessed to give than to receive to a whole other level. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways. Giving helps me not forget where I’m coming from,” said Luisa Tapia, founder of My Peruvian Treasures, one of the gift fair’s marketplace vendors. “We almost have a duty to give. It’s really connected to love. When I give, I always receive more in return. It’s almost like planting seeds.” Over the years, GTGH’s alternative gift fair has changed and evolved, with vendors, nonprofits and people coming and going, but the event has always stayed true to its mission by placing humans ahead of material goods.

“I want people to have a sense of hope and realize there’s another way to do the holidays,” said Knepper, a nurse by profession. “For me, it’s refreshing when people do things a different way. I don’t have to go with the rat race that the normal status quo of the holidays bring.” “I don’t like the emphasis on materialism,” she added. “The fair redefines giving. My parents have always been minimalists. I started giving them charitable contributions as gifts even before the fair began. Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want people to learn more about the issues at people’s hearts.” This season’s GTGH gift fair will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Lancaster Bible College (LBC) will host its final oncampus open house of the 2023 calendar year on Friday, Nov. 17, from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Geared toward prospective high school students and their families, the event will include tours of the Lancaster campus at 901 Eden Road, interactions with faculty and current students, lunch in Olewine Dining Commons, time in Good Shepherd Chapel and visits to classrooms and athletics facilities. Students and families can also ask questions about topics such as LBC’s commitment to biblical integration in every

program, the college’s calling and career development efforts, short-term and semester study abroad programs, and Division III Chargers sports teams, as well as student access to the Counseling & Care Center, academic mentoring, writing support and accessibility services.
