See This Trail Through A Geologist’s Eyes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“There’s a lot going on along this trail,” said Jeri Jones, describing the 14-mile Northwest Lancaster County River Trail as it runs from Columbia to Falmouth. “There are so many cool things to see.” Jones combined his knowledge of the trail and his passion for geology to write “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.” The book, which was published in 2020, provides an overview of 26 stops along the trail, beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and ending at the Falmouth boat launch. “There is no geological knowledge required to enjoy this book,” Jones stated, noting that the book begins with what he calls “River Trail Geology 101,” which introduces readers to types of rocks and geologic features such as faults and folds. “I know people who like to carry this book on the trail with them. It’s a tool to enhance their trail walk and give them a purpose while they’re on the trail.”
Crafting for a Cause will be held at Columbia River Park.
Supporting The Community Through Crafts t’s not too early to get started on your Christmas shopping, said Kim Rightnour. She’s organizing Crafting for a Cause, a fall craft show sponsored by Chickies Rock Women of the Moose. The event will be held at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We will have a wide variety of crafters,” she stated, adding that she expects about 50 vendors to participate. Items will include wooden signs and charcuterie boards, homemade candles and wax melts, jewelry, macrame, fine art and more. “We’ll also have two bakeries selling their products, and we’ll have a fresh flower vendor,” she noted. She

emphasized that the vendors are almost all local to the Columbia area, which is important to the Women of the Moose. “We believe in supporting the local community,” she explained. Several nonprofit organizations will have tables at the event, including Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a Columbia-based group that supports public safety and military members as well as wounded warriors. Food will be available at the craft show from Kurtz’s Concessions. “They have a big menu, from cheeseburgers to cotton candy and funnel cakes and freshly made kettle corn,” Rightnour said. The event will also feature music throughout the day as well as prize giveaways. “Every craft vendor who
participates donates an item they make from their stand, and we’ll be selling tickets (for a drawing) to raise additional money for our causes,” Rightnour noted. Crafting for a Cause benefits local projects of the Columbia Moose Lodge, including donations to local food banks and adopt-a-family holiday programs, as well as national programs. Moose International supports Mooseheart, a group home for children, and Moosehaven, a retirement community. The Women of the Moose hold two craft shows annually, one in the spring and one in the fall, Rightnour said, noting that the spring show is set for Saturday, May 14, 2022. The shows used to be held in the
Moose Lodge parking lot, but the event soon outgrew that space. “The park is a perfect location,” Rightnour remarked. “It’s a beautiful setting overlooking the river, and it’s very representative of Columbia and what this town has to offer.” She said there will be something for everyone at the craft show, noting, “You can get your Christmas shopping done in a day and you can support local businesses by purchasing local, American-made products. I’m a firm believer in supporting the businesses that provide to our community and help make Columbia a great place to live.” For more information on Crafting for a Cause, search for “Crafting for a Cause Fall Craft Show” on Facebook.
