Eastern York Will Celebrate Homecoming BY CATHY MOLITORIS
astern York High School will celebrate homecoming before the school’s football game against Susquehannock High School on Friday, Oct. 15. A homecoming dance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16. The candidates for homecoming queen are Aubrey Buchanan, Sadie Buser, Teirini Doll, Breana Grim, Evelyn Whiteside and Victoria Zerbe. Homecoming king candidates are Bryce Currier, Logan Dodson, Brody Hinkle, Ethan Nickel, Jordan Peters, Anthony Roselli and Ludovico Solaro. Aubrey is the daughter of Travis Strausbaugh and Lorissa St. Clair of Hellam. She is president of FFA and is a member of Student Council, Mini-THON and the Interact, Varsity, SADD and yearbook clubs. After graduation, she plans to attend college to major in biology with a focus in zoology and botany. Sadie is the daughter of Michele Buser of Wrightsville and the late Richard Buser. She is an executive member of Student Council and Mini-THON and is a member of the

National Honor Society (NHS). She is president of SADD and is a member of the Varsity, recycling and yearbook clubs. She also plays lacrosse and varsity basketball. Outside of school, she volunteers as a coach with the U6 Hellam Ravens soccer team and participates in York Thunder AAU basketball. She plans to attend college to major in biochemistry with the goal of becoming a dentist. Teirini is the daughter of Sheena and Nathan Smeltzer of East Prospect and Shannon Doll of Hellam. She is captain of the volleyball team, is a cheerleader and plays basketball and lacrosse. She is also a member of Student Council. After graduation, she plans to attend Shippensburg University to major in criminal justice. Breana is the daughter of James Grim and Rebekah Grim of Lower Windsor. She is a member of NHS, Student Council and Mini-THON as well as the SADD and Varsity clubs. She also plays varsity basketball. Outside of school, she plays travel basketball. After graduation, she plans to attend college to major in business marketing.

Over the years, Columbia has experienced its fair share of tragedy. There was the burning of the Columbia Opera House, deaths on Wright’s Ferry, a deadly trolley crash and the famous burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge. Rivertown Theatre Productions will bring this spooky history to life during Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour. Tours will be given every half-hour between 6:30 and See Rivertown Theatre pg 3

Spooky season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a Halloween Tour? Create Columbia will host the tour of nine locations throughout Columbia on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be available on the day of the event at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 2:30 to 6 p.m. “This is a self-guided tour,” said Denise Brubaker, who is organizing the event with Kay Leader. “The tickets will include a brochure with the addresses and summaries of each place.”

The 71st edition of the York Halloween Parade will hit the streets on Sunday, Oct. 24, marking a return from its COVID-19 hiatus. The parade will again begin at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., at 2 p.m. and travel east on Market Street to Broad Street in downtown York. The route will feature a number of vendors from 1 to 3 p.m. Several high school bands have committed to the parade. This is the fifth year for the Haunted Lantern Tour, and Mimnall said it’s a unique event. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we talk as if the events are happening here and now,” she explained. “Our actors are portraying rehearse for Rivertown Theatre Productions’ that person during the event. Actors upcoming Haunted Lantern Tour. We want to make people feel as if they are there in the story.” Proceeds from the tour will benefit local organizations, including the upkeep of the Miller Mansion. Wright and Mimnall said they hope attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of Columbia’s rich past. “The tour is equally historical and theatrical,” Mimnall explained. “It’s mostly on the historical side, with some subtle jump scares, but nothing too scary.” Reservations are recommended for the tour, although walk-ins will be accepted if space allows. Third St. The tour is billed as “theater in the street,” and it features a cast of about 25 costumed characters. This year’s theme is “Unfortunate Events.” “One of the stops will be the dungeons below the Columbia Market House,” said Rebecca Wright, who coowns Rivertown Theatre Productions with Sara Mimnall. While the market has been beautifully renovated, the dungeons have not been touched since they were used to house inmates many years ago. “They are historically accurate, right down to the chains used to hold prisoners,” Wright noted, adding that they make the perfect creepy setting for a tour stop. Additional stops will include the old Becker’s Chip Factory, as well as Art Printing Company, located in the historic Miller Mansion, where Rivertown Theatre Productions has its home base. “The Becker’s Chip Factory is a brand-new, never-before-

Leader suggests that tourgoers begin their tour in the dungeons below the market house, noting that two people will be in the dungeons to give tours of the historic site. From there, the tour will feature a mix of private homes and other locations. “We are hoping to do this tour year after year,” she said of the first-year event. The idea for the Halloween Tour came up at a meeting for members of Create Columbia, a group dedicated to promoting the arts in the town. “It was actually my idea,” said Denise. “I thought, ‘Lots of towns do Christmas tours. Why don’t we do a Halloween tour?’” Denise and her husband, Gary, are the perfect couple to host a spot on the tour. “I have a room downstairs in my house that’s decorated for Halloween year-round, and it’s been that way for 15 years,” Denise said. While Denise came up with the idea for the tour, Gary is the bigger Halloween fan in the family. He collects Halloween decorations, which are displayed throughout the Brubakers’ house. “It reminds me of the 1950s when I was growing up,” Gary explained,

Second St., on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. MaryAlice Bitts-Jackson will show examples and discuss the historic significance of “ghost signs” or faded signs painted on buildings throughout the world as well as those found in Columbia. Church Plans Remembrance Service Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, will host a Wave of Light Service of Remembrance on Friday, Oct. 15, at 6:45 p.m. The purpose of this reflective service is to provide comfort to those grieving pregnancy and infant loss, and it is part of a worldwide effort to bring awareness, remembrance, and hope to women whose pregnancy ends in loss. Each year, on Oct. 15, people all over the world light candles at 7 p.m. local time,
causing a glow of light for the entire day across the globe to remember those who were never born, were born still, or only lived for a moment, as well as to bring comfort to their families. Bike & Hike Sets Record COBYS Family Services held its 25th annual Bike & Hike on Sept. 12. More than 325 walkers, bicyclists, and motorcyclists participated to support the organization’s ministries of foster care, adoption, counseling, and family life education. Over $160,000 was raised by the event, making it the highest grossing Bike & Hike to date. The previous record of $148,000 was set in 2018.
The top three fundraisers were Don Fitzkee and Lancaster Church of the Brethren with $11,050, Floy Fitzkee of Manheim with $9,070, and Londa Brandt of Manheim with $8,525. ABC Keystone Adds Three New Team Members The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recently announced that three new team members have joined the chapter staff: Derek Robbins of New Cumberland, HVAC instructor for the ABC Keystone apprenticeship program; Janet Gribble of Ronks, assistant director of marketing and communications; and Lori Allison of Columbia, administrative assistant, member services. Robbins is a certified EPA608 proctor from the ESCO Institute, providing HVAC Level 1 apprentices the opportunity to prepare for and take the EPA608 Universal Certification exam. Robbins has more than 15 years experience in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry. In his role at ABC, he will instruct students in HVAC/R installation, service, mainte-
nance and troubleshooting of residential and commercial HVAC/R systems. Robbins also earned his refrigeration technician license, journeyman sheet metal license and oil burners license. In addition to his HVAC/R trade experience, he served as an enlisted military police officer. Habitat For Humanity Receives Donation

York Habitat for Humanity is one of more than 220 Habitat organizations awarded a grant from Wells Fargo as part of its nationwide initiative to help low- to moderateincome families to construct and improve homes across the country. York Habitat will receive $30,000 and put the funding toward construction costs of two of the six homes currently being built on the 700 block of Chestnut Street in York city. Two families have been chosen for these homes and are waiting for their completion. The grant is part of a $7.75 million donation Wells Fargo is making to Habitat for Humanity International through Wells Fargo Builds, an initiative that provides philanthropic financial support and volunteerism to create sustainable, affordable housing. LGH Launches “Lead-Free Families” Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health recently announced the launch of Lead-Free Families, a 10-year community health improvement initiative aimed at eliminating childhood lead poisoning in Lancaster County. Lead-Free Families aims to identify and remediate lead hazards in at least 2,800 Lancaster County homes over the next decade. The $50 million investment is being initially funded and led by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Lead poisoning can result in serious and lifelong health and developmental issues, including lower IQ, slowed growth, learning problems, behavioral issues, hyperactivity, and hearing and speech development problems. It can also cause pregnancy prob-
lems, including low birth weight; premature birth; damage to the baby’s brain, kidneys, and nervous system; and even miscarriage. There is no cure for lead poisoning, and its effects are irreversible. Increased blood lead screening of children and pregnant women is one of the core components of Lead-Free Families. This exhibit was inspired by a website documenting the Eucharistic miracles, which was created by Blessed Carlo Acutis. Carlo was an Italian teenager who was beatified in October 2020. Forty hours of Adoration of the Most Holy Eucharist will be held in the main church for Catholics beginning on Oct 15.

All community members are invited to view this exhibit, no matter their religious affiliation. Admission is free. Presentation hours include Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 13 and 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Oct. 17 from noon to 7 p.m. The presentation may be viewed by using the St. James Parish Hall entrance, located at the back of the church. This display showcases, through photos and detailed descriptions, more than 170 Catholic Church approved Eucharistic miracles from all over the world, throughout the centuries.
