Trashion

“You’re going to see something you’ve never seen before,” said Kim Morrow, describing the Trashion Fashion Avant Garb Show. “You’ll be surprised at the creativity.” The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Switchboard Gallery, 40 N. Third St., Columbia, on the second floor.

Sponsored by Columbia Creative Factory, the event will feature a fashion show from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by an after party from 7 to 9 p.m. Participants in the fashion show will spotlight outfits made with recycled, reused or repurposed items. “As the name implies, the emphasis is on recycling materials that might ordinarily be thrown out once they have served their intended purpose,” noted Morrow, an event committee member.

Morrow explained that the first event of this kind in the area was held in 2016. “I went to the first one, and for years, I’ve wanted to do it again,” she said. “I was so impressed by the creativity on display.” In that

event, participants modeled outfits made from packing supplies, cardstock and accordioned paper, among other materials.

Vicki von Schaaf, another committee member, recalled a similar event held annually when she lived in New York. She joined other committee members, including

Columbia Creative Factory cofounder Mychal LaVia and artist Peggi Donnan, to bring the event back to town. Von Schaaf’s grandchildren participated in the 2016 event and will be taking part in this year’s show as well.

That’s one of the many appeals of the Trashion Fashion show, said Morrow. “It’s really an ageless event,” she stated. “It’s appealing to kids through adults.”

The evening will begin with a red carpet and runway for models to display their creations. Attendees will hear the artist’s statement about each piece, and the outfits will be judged in one of three categories - children age 10 and under, teens ages 11 to 17, and adults age 18 and over. “We want people to

continue to wear their costume for the after party, so they can give audience members a chance to see the creation up close and to talk about their creative process,” Morrow stated. Hors d’oeuvres will be served at the after party, and a variety of eco-friendly vendors will be on-site. Live music will be featured by Albie von Schaaf and Joe Cigan. Adult beverages may be purchased from Columbia Kettle Works, located on the first floor of the venue.

The Trashion Fashion show is also a benefit to raise funds for local arts organizations and offer children the opportunity to participate in music or art lessons, programs or workshops. Ticket purchasers will be able to note where they would like their donations to be used.

Morrow noted that the organizers hope to make the fashion show an annual event. “I love doing things that promote the community and get people together,” she remarked. “It’s going to be a fun evening.”

What do you get when you combine a little bit of history with a little bit of mystery?

Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour. This year’s tours will run every half hour between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 28, as well as every half hour between 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23; Saturday, Oct. 29; and Sunday, Oct. 30.

“This year’s theme, ‘Industry Ascending,’ is a narrative of how business and industry transformed the town of Columbia through the years,” said Sara Mimnall, owner of Rivertown Theatre Productions and producer and director of the tour.

“Guests will be introduced to visionaries, entrepreneurs and workingclass individuals that pioneered business and manufacturing throughout history. … Columbia played a significant role in the industrialized world of the 19th century.”

Mimnall noted that she wrote the script for the tour. “I’ve been wanting to cover the industry aspect of Columbia through the years for some time now, since it was such a big part

of the town’s history but was struggling with finding a way to discuss the production of goods and materials while keeping it entertaining,” she stated. “The script was a long time coming, but I think I finally nailed it.” She added that although the tour only takes place on two weekends, working on it behind the scenes is a year-round job, from researching and writing the script to auditioning actors and rehearsing the story.

“The goal of the tour is to educate and entertain through ominous appearances of the deceased, and I think we balance that well,” Mimnall remarked. “Guests are immersed in history as if they’re

Oct. 15. Tours will start at 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. The rain dates will be Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22.

“This tour will be self-contained in the cemetery,” noted Jeremy Young, who has written the program. “In the past, we’ve toured all over the town and we’ve focused on the buildings and events that have happened in town. This year, we’re going to focus on the people of Wrightsville - the colorful people who really bring the tapestry of this town to life.”

There’s no better place to do that, Young noted, than in the cemetery, located at 600 Hellam St. While tour participants may recognize some famous Wrightsville names on the tour, many of the people were ordinary citizens who have impacted the town’s history. “Wrightsville was a foundry town. It was industrial,” Young stated, noting that his own family members were foundry workers. “There are family names who have worked generationally in the foundry, and they are important. They kept the town going, and it’s important that these people are highlighted.” While much of Wrightsville’s history focuses on its important role in the Civil War, Young noted that many modern graves in the cemetery are also historically significant. “People sometimes forget that the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are also history,” he stated. “These people may not have paragraphs of illustrious history associated with them, but the family names are still important.”

In doing research for the tour, Young talked to people living in town and asked about their memories of some of the people who will be featured on the tour. “The really cool part about living in a small town is, boy, did we have some

really fun people who lived here,” he said with a laugh.

The lantern tour is Historic Wrightsville Inc.’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds benefit the operation of the organization’s museum on Locust Street and the Burning of the Bridge Diorama on Hellam Street. Refreshments will be offered at the end of tour.

Young noted that even though the tour coincides with a traditionally spooky time of year and although it takes place at night in a cemetery, it’s not about ghosts and goblins. “It’s a tour about history,” he stated. “When you come on this tour, you’re taking something away. I’m hoping to hear a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ and ‘I didn’t know that’ on the tour. If one person walks away with an aha moment when they leave, we’ve done our job.”

For more information or to purchase lantern tour tickets, call the museum at 717-252-1169.

Underground Railroad Learning Tour Set

Mennonite Life and the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania will partner to offer the Underground Railroad Learning Tour for the third consecutive year. The tour will be offered on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.

Columbia was situated at a 19thcentury transportation “pinch point” approximately 30 miles from the Mason-Dixon Line. Its extensive network of anti-slavery activists provided assistance to Black people fleeing enslavement. Many of those activists were free Blacks or individuals who were part of communities such as Quakers and Mennonites.

Tour guests will learn about Columbia’s secret network of safe houses and why some people believe the term Underground Railroad originated in Columbia. Each guest will receive a keepsake “passport” showing

the walking route and featured sites as well as a complimentary driving tour route. Several sites on the tour are part of the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom; an official park service stamp is available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.

There is a fee to attend, and advance registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 19. To learn more and register, visit www.mennonite life.org/events or call 717-393-9745. Storytelling sites are primarily outdoors, and the learning tour will be held rain or shine. This event has sold out quickly in the past.

It’s a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that will even teach you something along the way.” The tour offers something for everyone, from history buffs to theater fans to anyone who enjoys spooky things, she said, adding, “We often use FX makeup or special effects lighting to give our tours just enough of a creep factor to keep you on your toes.”

Still, she emphasized that the tour is family-friendly. “We’re not a horror attraction,” she stated. “We often recommend that parents use their own discretion when deciding if our tour is kid-friendly, as the actors do occasionally use mild profanity or discuss controversial topics like death, but that said, our youngest

actress, Hailey, is 5 years old, began acting with us last year, and we haven’t scared her away yet.”

This year’s tour will begin at Art Printing Company, 131 Locust St., and will continue down Locust Street to Coffee and Cream, the original Columbia Railroad passenger station. The Rivertowne Trolley will then take tour-goers through town before arriving at the Mount Bethel Cemetery, where the tour will conclude.

Treasures To Be Found At Yard Sale

Walk in the doors of the fall yard and vendor sale at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, and you never know what you might find.

“I like to tell people at the door, ‘Go in and find your treasure,’” said Chrisie Emswiler, event chair. “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”

The church will hold the sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items will be for sale both inside and outside the church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St.

“We really have a little bit of everything for sale,” Emswiler noted.

“We sell everything but clothing.”

Items include household goods, toys, glassware, seasonal décor, linens, shoes, scarves, books and jewelry.

“We have a dining room table and chairs for sale,” Emswiler said, adding that all items are priced to sell. Tickets will be sold for two basket giveaways as well - one featuring fall and Thanksgiving items and one featuring Christmas items.

The church has been holding the yard sale annually for more than a decade, although the pandemic put a pause on the event. This will be the first time it’s been held since 2019.

The sale will also feature free coffee and doughnuts for shoppers, and the Egg Roll Lady will operate a stand outside the church from 8:30 a.m. to noon. A variety of baked goods prepared by church members will be for sale as well.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the mission and outreach ministries of the church, Emswiler said, noting that the church supports Friends of Donegal, among other organizations.

Items for the yard sale are donated by church and community members, and donations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 14. To make a donation, contact Emswiler at 717468-6601.

Emswiler remarked that the yard sale is just one way the church works to impact the community. “We’re a small church, but we have a big heart for others,” she said.
