Thrive and Grit is just one of many area organizations supporting the fight against breast cancer. Here’s a sampling of some of the other local groups that are fighting back against the disease and supporting breast cancer patients and survivors:

Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood.

Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013.

In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.”

Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 2

Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 2164 Mount Zion Road, York, recently announced the opening of its new food pantry to the general public. This new church project is designed to fulfill a growing need for residents who live outside York city and thus may not have access to food banks and other similar facilities. The church pantry offers individuals and families assistance with a variety of items. Available items include nonperishable foods, personal care items, cleaning supplies, and paper products. The pantry does not have regular operating hours.

Friends In Action International (FIA) has been named a 2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit by GreatNonprofits, an organization that allows people to share stories on its website about their experiences with more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofit organizations. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit.

Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.

Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn.

Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to.

“She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn.

“She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.”

Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance.

“She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.”

Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Johnston shared that so far this year those efforts have included providing clean water to more than 20,000 West Africans, medical assistance to more than 1,200 people in Bolivia and Brazil, community transformation and life skills training for more than 1,400 people in Nicaragua, educational support to hundreds of residents in Moldova and Papua New Guinea, opportunities to serve and experience a new culture to hundreds of local volunteers, and most importantly - an opportunity for more than 215,000 people to hear the Gospel.

People who would like to hear more about the thousands of people in indigenous villages who are being transformed by the Gospel through outreaches led by FIA are invited to the 2019 Missions Banquet.

The banquet will take place on Friday, Nov. 1, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel, 800 E. Park Drive, Harrisburg.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring beef tips, lemon herb chicken, assorted desserts, and more will be served at 6:20 p.m.

Guests will hear from keynote speaker Levi Pittman, an FIA leader for a water

project for the NiVan people in Vanuatu, a Pacific island country. The evening will include a show of appreciation for volunteers, donors, and sponsors, as well as videos from the NiVan and Rama Cay people groups and testimonies from the field.

Attendees will hear stories from the Messiah College student engineering team and students involved in The Collaboratory, a center for project-based learning at Messiah College.

A photo station, skits, games, prizes and giveaways, auctioned items, and information kiosks about Bolivia, Moldova, and Papua New Guinea will also be part of the celebration.

(EPC) is teaming up with the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce and PA CareerLink Lancaster County to host a job fair on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The event is free and open to the public, with no registration required.

More than one dozen area employers are signed up to participate in the inaugural event, where job seekers will have the opportunity to visit with various company representatives and learn about part-time, full-time, and seasonal job openings.

Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce coordinator Kerry Meyers said that hosting a job fair was an idea she had already been considering, so she was thrilled when Nichole Caban, who has been an advertising consultant for Mount Joy-based EPC for 17 years, contacted her about hosting an event this fall. Meyers and Caban both see the fair as a way to support local businesses in a time when so many of them are hiring and seeking dedicated employees.

Chairperson Joann Price noted that after taking a few years off, organizers decided to add clothing back to the selection of merchandise at the church. Clothing for infants, children, and adults will be available for shoppers to choose from.

Children’s activities will include face painting, games, and balloons.

Other offerings will include a cafe with breakfast and lunch

items, such as soup and sandwiches, as well as homemade baked goods. A silent auction will also be part of the experience.

Proceeds from the event will go toward sponsoring several local ministries of the church, including the Columbia UMC Day Camp held in Glatfelter Park each summer and a community cooking program offered free of charge to area residents.

Columbia UMC offers a praise service at 9 a.m. and a traditional service at 11 a.m. each Sunday, with community groups meeting at 10:05 a.m. All are welcome.

Crime Stoppers Slate Fundraiser York County Crime Stoppers will host its second annual Top Dog fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York.

During the event, York County police departments will vie for the Top Dog award by creating a one-of-a-kind hot dog recipe.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a donation of $122,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in central Pennsylvania. The funds will be used to support the transformation of the food bank’s youth programs.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide 127,000 meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. CHS Announces 2019 Homecoming Court Columbia High School (CHS), 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia, is celebrating homecoming with an array of activities, including a pep rally, a formal homecoming dance, and the crowning of the 2019 homecoming queen.

The celebration will include Spirit Week dressup days such as Red, White, and Blue Day; Twister (Mix and Match); Wild West; Tide Pride (Crimson and Gold); and Pink Out. A middle and high school pep rally is set to take place during school on Friday, Oct. 11.

The homecoming queen will be crowned during the football game against Octorara Junior-Senior High School on Oct. 11. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at the CHS stadium. The 2018 homecoming queen, Rosalie Gilbert, will crown the new 2019 homecoming queen during a halftime ceremony.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, a homecoming dance will take place at 7 p.m. in the CHS gymnasium. There will be “Hoedown.”

Members of the homecoming court will also be part of the Columbia Mardi Gras Parade on Thursday, Oct. 24. The girls will ride in pickup trucks provided by Chapman Ford Columbia.

The six homecoming queen candidates were selected based on a vote from members of the entire student body, and the senior class and the faculty will vote for the queen. The candidates are Juliana Anderson, Melanie Cruz-Bernard, Chante Gilbert, Courtney McClair, Olivia Warner, and Morgan Williams.

Juliana Anderson is the daughter of Charles Anderson Jr. and Shari Anderson. She has been in marching band from grades nine to 12 and is the brass section leader. She has been a member of the Drama Club in grades nine to 12 and played soccer in ninth grade. She was a member of the Junior National Honor Society (NHS) in ninth grade and is the historian of the Class of 2020.

Juliana’s volunteer work includes running the sound system at church. Her homecoming escort will be Parker Ohrel. Juliana plans to attend Elizabethtown College to major in either music or theater production.

Melanie Cruz-Bernard is the daughter of Rafael Cruz-Miller and Johany Bernard. Melanie has appeared in the spring musicals and fall plays all four years of high school. She has been a member of County Chorus and District Chorus for three years and a member of the high school chorus in grades nine through 12. She played tennis in grades 11 and 12 and is currently captain of the tennis team. She is secretary of the International Thespian Society and president of the Class of 2020. One of the best cures for a loss is a win and when you can stack multiple wins on top of each other, even better. The Eastern York girls’ volleyball team had a need for that type of remedy after a 3-0 loss to New Oxford on September 26th put the Lady Golden Knights in a two-match skid.

Eastern York’s much needed cure came on September 30th with a 3-1 win over Warwick. Eastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead on wins of 25-15

and 30-28 but the Lady Warriors fended off elimination with a 25-13 game three win. Eastern York rebounded to close out the match with a 25-21 game four victory.

Ally Willich led the way with 22 assists, six digs, three aces and one kill while Sarah Moore added 14 digs and 10 kills. Alyssa Noll (11 digs) and Madison Shimmel (10 digs) both reached double digit dig totals while combining for four aces, three assists and one kill.

aces, four blocks and four digs to aid the effort.

Eastern York made it two in a row with another 3-1 win, this one over Gettysburg on October 1st.

This time Eastern had to fight back from a 1-0 hole after dropping the opening game 25-19. Moore, Smith, Willich and Shimmel were more than up for the challenge, ripping off wins of 25-23, 27-25 and 25-19 to secure the victory. Moore finished with 17 kills, 13 digs and two aces while Smith added 10 kills, six digs, one ace and one block. Willich collected 28 assists to go with seven digs and two aces while Shimmel matched the two aces but added four kills and 10 digs.

FOOTBALL The game of football, just like life, hardly ever works out like you prefer and a prime example would be the Eastern York football team.

The Golden Knights, under second year skipper Josh Campbell, came into the 2019 season looking to build on last year’s 3-7 campaign and appeared to be doing so with a tidy 2-1 record after three weeks.

Three weeks later Eastern sits at 24 after suffering a 50-15 setback to Gettysburg on the final Friday in September.

Despite the unpleasant look of the final, Campbell would not let the score speak for his team.

“Simply stated, though the score may not reflect it, there were points throughout the game that we were competitive,” said Campbell. “However, when facing an opponent of Gettysburg’s quality, you must play consistently. As a team we are looking for ways to not defeat ourselves and play with consistency across the board.”

The consistency that Campbell is looking for escaped his troops against the Warriors leading to the lopsided final score but Eastern was able to hang with Gettysburg in some areas. The Golden Knights posted a 172-5 advantage in passing yards but Gettysburg still managed to hold a slight edge in total yards, 288-271, and first downs, 17-11, but it was three turnovers, a safety and a kickoff return for a touchdown that got Eastern York in trouble.

The bulk of the Warrior output came from three players, including the final score of the game that came on a 70-yard kickoff return by Charles Warren. The senior running back added three scores and 117 yards on the ground while Ruger (12 carries for 88 yards and a TD), Gunner (12 carries for 71 yards and two TDs) and Pennington provided the rest of the Warrior punch. Kaleb Corwell led the Golden Knight offense with 128 total yards but it was Bryce Currier (three catches for

41 yards and a TD) and Jerome Lafranier (three catches for 29 yards and a TD) that made visits to the end zone for Eastern York.

Lafranier added 43 yards on two carries while Jake Crumling caught four balls for 19 yards. Trevor Seitz finished 15 of 25 for 172 yards with two touchdown passes.

GOLF Having your best game of the season during a playoff is always a good thing and for Dyson Renn it proved to be a District 3 qualifying type of good thing. The senior had what head coach Brett Heiser called his best round of the season on September 26th at the YAIAA Championship.

Renn covered Briarwood’s East course in 84 strokes, good enough for 15th on the day and to secure a spot in the District 3-3A Championship which is back at Briarwood on October 4th and 5th.

FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team hit a lull in their schedule over the past week, playing just twice, posting a split in those two games. The Lady Golden Knights posted a 3-1 win over Kennard-Dale on September 26th, improving to 9-2 while completing a season sweep of the Lady Rams in the process.

“KD always gives us a competitive game,” said head coach Steph Felix.

“It was a great feeling to finally turn the corner and keep adding to this amazing run.”

thanks to a Jenna Soukaseum goal that came roughly 6:30 before the break. Addy Malone, with help from Morgan Arnold and Lily Campbell, flipped that one goal deficit on its head starting with Malone’s first goal of the game 10:29 into the second half. Aiyana Eller provided the setup for that score while Campbell did the same for Eastern’s go-ahead goal a few minutes later.

Arnold took care of that Campbell setup while Malone went solo for the game’s final tally just over a minute later. Kelsey Felix needed just five saves to earn the win.

The Lady Golden Knights suffered their second loss to Bermudian Springs and just their third loss of the season on September 30th. The Lady Eagles rolled to a 3-0 win despite 14 Kelsey Felix saves.

BOYS’ SOCCER “I was extremely excited for the boys and very proud of the team,” said boys’ soccer head coach JJ Heiland after his squad’s 2-0 victory over Hanover on September 25th. The win, just Eastern’s second of the season and first since August 31st broke up a 0-8-1 stretch for the Golden Knights.

“Eastern York soccer is blessed, we truly have some great young men playing soccer this year while being led by some phenomenal seniors in Gavin Donnelly and Logan Kessler,” said Heiland. “The team’s mental toughness has been tested during this challenging season but See Eastern pg 12

Tide Football Takes Lebanon to Overtime

The Crimson Tide hosted Lebanon Friday, Sept. 27, for an L-L league section three showdown. The game, with five lead changed and a tie that eventually led to overtime, may have been the wildest one of the year.

Columbia just could not capitalize in pivotal moments, dropping the nail bitter 42-36.

Quarterback Matt McCleary started the scoring for the Tide and finally broke the gridlock in the second quarter with a seven-yard dash for a score.

Philip Acosta put extra point through to give the hosts a seven-point advantage.

The next three touchdowns were all scored by Lebanon, who went into the half up 14-7. But Columbia owned the third quarter so whatever head coach Kyle Bud told the boys at halftime sparked them to keep fighting and to finish the game strong.

The next time Columbia lit up the scoreboard was off a six-yard pass from McCleary to Keegan Zink. This put the Tide within one score.

McCleary followed with another touchdown toss, this time to Darnell tucker on an 18 yard strike. Ryan Redding then caught the successful twopoint conversion to give the hosts a lead in the third quarter. Columbia capped their explosive third quarter when Zink picked off a Lebanon pass and went 26 yards to the house to further their lead. With 22 points

scored in the third frame, Columbia held a nine point lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter though the boys could only muster one touchdown as the best friends hooked up again. McCleary found Redding for a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Before entering overtime McCleary got the Tide into striking distance but the clock expired with the ball on Lebanon’s 17-yard line.

Columbia had a few drives go deep into Lebanon’s territory that should have produced points but the drives stalled. In overtime Lebanon jumped in front first but did not finish their two-point conversion successfully.

This left the door open for Columbia.

All they need to do was score and kick the extra point to win but a fumble on the first play ended the drive before it even started.

Coach Kyle talked about competing for all four quarters and mentioned earlier this year that a few missed opportunities have put them in a tough spot to overcome and this game is exactly what he was talking about. Columbia ended the game just short but on paper, and in most statistical categories, they beat out Lebanon. Unfortunately the game is not won or lost on paper but on the gridiron. Columbia converted 19 first downs while totaling 415 yards, 327 of them coming through the air while 88 of them were picked up on the ground. The Tide defense only allowed 356.

McCleary, coming off a career night where he threw for 476 yards, had another solid game. He threw for 327 yards completing 62.5 percent of his passes while twirling three touchdowns. He also scrambled for 55 yards and a score. His only downfall was three interceptions with one of them being a pick six.

Redding hauled in three passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Michael Poole caught six passes for 102 yards.

Tucker also caught six passes totaling 73 yards and a touchdown. Zink, who also had a defensive touchdown, hauled in five passes for 53 yards and a score in the loss.

On the year McCleary is only one of

eight L-L league quarterbacks to enter the 1,000 passing yard club as he sits at 1,734. He should be able to enter the 2,000 passing yard clubs in his next game, as he just needs 266 yards. He also leads the Tide in rushing yards with 174 on the year.

“McCleary really stepped up to be better young man, teammate, and lastly student athlete,” coach Kyle said about his offensive leader.

McCleary’s favorite target and best friend Redding is leading the way at wide receiver with 40 receptions for 668 yards and seven scores. He has a real chance of hitting 1,000 receiving

yards on the year as there are four more regular season games left.

Tucker and Poole have also been very productive this year as well with 23 catches and 300 yards, and 20 catches for 377 yards respectively.

Demetrius Diaz- Ellis, who was used more as a running back, also contributed at wide out with 15 catches for 237 yards, He found the end zone three times this year.

While the playoffs may seem like a dream, with a few victories and some help above them in the standings, the Tide could sneak in.

The quick little two game winning streak came to a close on October 1st with a 7-0 loss to Susquehannock. The Lady Warriors controlled throughout leading to 12 saves for Yingst in the loss.

The boys came out running against Linden Hall last week. Anthony Palmisano finished second overall with a time of 19:15 and Tanner Ness set a personal record running the 5k in 23:39 placing him sixth overall.

Emily Gambler paced the girls with a time of 23:04, which placed her third overall with a personal best. Cassidy Cook took home 10th place with a time of 24:53 for her second fastest time of the year. Mallory Conroy had a personal best time of 26:30 that put her in 14th place.

Against Elco and Octorara, Palmisano placed eighth overall with a time of 19:39 and Ness placed 19th with a time of 24:45.

Gambler, who placed fourth with a time of 24:14, again paced the girls and Cook followed, finishing fifth in 25:25. Conroy was not far behind taking seventh in 28:03.

Both teams ran very strong and hope to take that into their next meet at Lampeter- Strasburg on October 8th.

GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team managed to nearly double their win total over the

last week, topping Hanover and Dover to jump from three wins to five wins on the season. The Lady Golden Knights had a field day in their September 25th win over Hanover, scoring 10 first half goals on their way to a 13-0 win. Savannah Yingst faced just one shot while picking up the easy shutout win.

Hannah Sellers, Kyrsten Strange and Sarah Fisher led the attack on offense by splitting six goals evenly.

Fisher split her two scores between the halves while both Sellers and Strange picked up their goals as part of the first half explosion. Eastern York High School Announces 2019 Homecoming Court Eastern York High School (EYHS), 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville, is celebrating homecoming with an array of activities, including Spirit Week dressup days, a pep rally, a homecoming dance, and the crowning of a homecoming queen and king.

The homecoming queen and king will be crowned prior to the homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 11. EYHS will face Susquehannock High School, with kickoff at 7 p.m.

A formal homecoming dance will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Wisehaven Event Center.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the dance is set to take place from 7 to 10 p.m. The theme for this year will be “Hollywood: A Knight in the Spotlight.”

Apprentices Compete In Annual Competition Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards.

The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history

of producing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area.

WIC Program Dayspring Women’s Giving Sets Changes Circle Sets Meeting Pennsylvania’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is offering its families a new way to shop for WIC food benefits using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (eWIC) card. WIC families in Lancaster County may begin using this new tool.

The eWIC card is designed to make shopping quick, easy and convenient for WIC families and their grocery stores.

WIC participants will save time at the checkout and can buy WIC foods in as many shopping trips as they need throughout the month. Participants may also have access to a new WICShopper smartphone app, allowing them to scan a food’s bar code to determine if it is a WICallowed food.

Chicken Corn Soup Sale Set The Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies is opening its doors with a full class schedule this fall.

The school is based at Liberty Place at 313 W. Liberty St. in Lancaster.

The school has been developed

by Karen Carnabucci, a licensed clinical social worker who has been training mental health professionals and others for more than 30 years. She will be the director and primary faculty member at the school and expects to host additional instructors with expertise in topics such as trauma-informed care, loss and grief, and alternative healing practices.

The training program focuses on experiential psychotherapies and action methods, including psychodrama, role play, group skills, Family and Systemic Constellations, art making, and sand tray. Starting January 2020, Karen will join with Sharon Czabafy to teach a four-part series on trauma-informed care with action and experiential methods.

Carnabucci is a nationally boardcertified trainer in psychodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy. She has also been certified as a Family and Systemic Constellations facilitator by the Stark Institute, Germany, and the Hellinger DC Center, Bethesda, Md. As a psychotherapist working since 1989, Carnabucci has expertise in trauma, addiction and recovery, intergenerational trauma and ancestry healing, spirituality, energy healing, and the mind-body approach to health.

She is the author of “Show and Tell Psychodrama: Skills for Therapists, Coaches, Teachers, and

Leaders” and co-author of “Healing Eating Disorders With Psychodrama and Other Action Methods: Beyond the Silence and the Fury” and “Integrating Psychodrama With Systemic Constellation Work: New Directions for Action Methods, Mind-Body Therapies, and Energy Healing.”

The school will especially cater to mental health professionals seeking alternatives to traditional auditorium trainings to get continuing education credits. In addition, the school will also serve physicians, nurses, educators, clergy, addictions counselors, creative arts therapists, alternative practitioners, youth and group leaders, life and wellness coaches, and others interested in alternate psychotherapies, safe role play, and action methods.

The school offers continuing education credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors, as well as psychodrama credits towards certification with the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy and the International Society of Experiential Professionals. Continuing education credits for psychologists are expected to be added in 2020.

In addition, personal growth groups for lifelong learners will be expanded, including Carnabucci’s Unfolding Love groups, as well as groups with art making and for people in recovery.

Basketball Team Posts Schedule The Ephrata Thunder, a basketball team that plays in the American Basketball Association (ABA), has announced its schedule of upcoming games.

The Ephrata Thunder was formed in 2019 when Pottstown native Stephen Bergman Sr., who was the owner of the ABA Pottstown Flames team for three years, decided to bring a professional basketball team to Ephrata.

The team is led by first-year head coach Malin Morrison, the only female coach in the league.

The ABA has more than 150 teams in the United States. The Ephrata Thunder’s players come from Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and have a combined international experience of 10 years. The team has three players from the local community, including one from Ephrata.
