SPOOKY STORIES

The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a LunchTIME presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. During this special Halloween edition of LunchTIME, curator Kim Jovinelli will share spooky stories on the “Ghosts of the Museum.” The public is invited to bring a lunch and join in a casual conversation and presentation of the story behind “haunted” pieces. LunchTIME is a complimentary educational program held every other month. The next program is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 12.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Susquehanna Area Senior Center, located at 2427 Craley Road, Wrightsville, in the Lower Windsor Township Building, has announced two upcoming events. The senior center will host a craft fair featuring more than 17 vendors and crafters on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. On Friday, Oct. 19, the senior center will hold a book and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations of books are being accepted. Marine Corps League Plans Semper Fi 5K, Kids’ Fun Race

The Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294 and Auxiliary of Lancaster County will present the second annual Semper Fi 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race on Saturday, Nov. 10. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the race, which will step off promptly at 8 a.m. from Columbia High School (CHS), 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia.

Race day check-in and registration will open at 6:30 a.m. Interested individuals may register at www.pretzel citysports.com/online-registration through Wednesday, Nov. 7. The deadline to register at a discounted rate and be guaranteed a race T-shirt is Monday, Oct. 15. Beyond that date, T-shirts will be available to registrants while supplies last.

Honoring veterans for their service and sacrifice will be the focus of the Marine Corps League of Lancaster County’s Semper Fi 5K Run/Walk and the Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race on Nov. 10 in Columbia. A discounted registration rate is available through Oct. 15.

Participants will follow a route down Ironville Pike and through Columbia Borough streets to the finish line at Locust and Bank streets.

Organizers describe the point-topoint course as a very fast, downhill

route. Distance mile markers will be provided at every half-mile, and a water and aid station will be set up at the halfway point.

Post-race festivities, as well as the Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race,

will take place at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, located near the 5K finish line. A disc jockey will play music, and free snacks and beverages will be available to participants.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, will remember St. Francis during its worship service on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 10:45 a.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of pets, past and present, to worship that day as they will be shared during the service. At 4 p.m., a blessing of pets will take place in the pavilion.

DSAA To Hold Sober Spooktacular Pie Sale Will Support Dyslexia Center

As Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) chairman Stacy Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado brainstormed ideas and researched potential options for speakers at the organization’s upcoming fundraising dinner, they hoped to find someone from outside the local area whom people had not heard from before. When someone suggested Brandon Novak, a well-known skateboarder and MTV celebrity with a powerful testimony and commitment to the recovery community, Emminger immediately began pursuing the possibility and was thrilled when he agreed to travel to Mount Joy to share his story.

I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth.

When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up.

I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to find our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world.

It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind.

The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will hold a Homeschool Day on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During the event, homeschoolers may take a behind-the-scenes tour, learn how water can be used to tell time, make a working clock to take home, go on a scavenger hunt through the museum exhibits, learn about how the sun can be used to tell time, play time-related games, and see a watch or clockmaker at work.

Demonstrations held throughout the day will inform and entertain families,

and participants will be able to see firsthand how a clock becomes a work of art.

Registration is required by Tuesday, Oct. 9. There is a cost per student, age 6 and up, with no charge for one accompanying adult. There is no admission fee for children under age 6 unless they want to make a clock.

Schreiber Hosts Rubber Duckie Race Schreiber Pediatric held its 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sept. 9. The event raised more than $115,000, which will go directly to support Schreiber’s array of therapy and educational services.

This year’s Duckie Day at Lancaster County Central Park was curtailed because of heavy rain.

Schreiber still managed a successful Duckie campaign because of higher-than-expected Duckie ticket sales and generous sponsorship support. Day-of sales fell short of the average total of $10,000 because of the weather, but supporters have helped erase that shortfall by making contributions after the event. The largest post-race gift came from Orrstown Bank, which had originally sponsored the event and sold tickets in its Lancaster County branches. Orrstown Bank contributed an additional $15,000.

“We will be dressing up, so we hope everyone else will too,” said Emminger.

The Sober Spooktacular will kick off with a social hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Memory Laps(e), a southcentral Pennsylvaniabased band that specializes in psychedelic party music, playing both covers and original songs.

A photo booth will be on hand, and ghoulish games are also planned.

A silent auction will offer a variety of items and experiences for folks to browse and bid on throughout the evening, including designer purses, a lithograph

print autographed by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, gift cards, themed baskets, and more. Winners will be announced at the close of the evening.

At 6 p.m., a buffet-style dinner complete with beef, chicken, vegetarian, and gluten-free entrée options will be served, followed by a dessert buffet.

Novak will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Born in Baltimore, Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team.

He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bam” and “Bam’s Unholy Union” starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and co-author Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,” a book

based on Novak’s life and experiences with heroin in Baltimore.

He now travels the country as an addiction and recovery speaker for Banyan Treatment Center in order to raise awareness and help addicts find the treatment that they need.

Proceeds from the event will support the operating costs of DSAA as it continues to fulfill its mission to bring awareness to the community on heroin and

opiate abuse. The organization’s mission, according to its website, is also to educate the community that heroin and opiate addiction is a treatable disease and to provide support to families affected by addiction and to individuals in recovery.

DSAA recently celebrated one year in its current offices, and Emminger said the organization is looking for an even larger space to facilitate events it hosts, such as family support groups and educational trainings. This fall, DSAA will be adding a SelfManagement and Recovery Training (SMART) meeting to its list of supportive approaches to addiction services. If freshly mulled apple cider, homemade applesauce, and warm apple dumplings sound even the least bit tempting, then make sure to mark the family calendar for the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society’s 13th annual Apple Festival, where apples will be the main attraction.

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, on the grounds of the historic Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. Admission is free, but a nominal fee will be charged for parking.

Live music will be performed throughout the event by Sweet November. The trio, comprised of Josh and Elizabeth Rindall and Josh Duma, has been performing at the Apple Festival for the past seven years. Sweet November will play a variety of genres at the Apple Festival, with an emphasis on fun songs that attendees can sing and dance to.

Tours of the historic Haldeman Mansion and adjacent summer house will be offered by Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) board members.

Apple cider making demonstrations will take place throughout the day, and visitors may sample fresh hot cider.

Plenty of food and beverages will be available to purchase.

Menu options will include grilled bratwurst and hot dogs,

homemade baked beans, chicken corn soup, chips, apple squash soup, applesauce, and plenty of apple-based desserts such as dumplings, crisp, cakes, and pies.

Fresh apples will also be available to purchase.

Children’s activities will include games such as bobbing for apples, pumpkin decorating, and a story time reading of

“Johnny Appleseed.” Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge will exhibit insect displays. Live insects will also be part of his presentation, and attendees will be able to pet or hold the insects.

The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of longterm placements.

The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E. Weekend Program with the objective of providing shortterm, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families.

The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn McKenna, director of development at Home of the Sparrow in Chester County. Trauma histories, substance use, housing and self-sufficiency are among the challenges facing women’s successful re-entry from incarceration in Chester County’s criminal justice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides case management services to women re-integrating into their communities following

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards.

The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated.

Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative.

An Honorable Mention in the large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional officers. Staff was trained through Mental Health First Aid USA, an eighthour course that teaches a fivestep action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate

Tide Football Struggles Against Annville-Cleona The Tide football team returned home to face Annville-Cleona, one of the top teams in Section 3, on Friday, September 28.

Head coach Bud Kyle said before the game that the key to beating the Little Dutchmen, who are tied with Lancaster Catholic for first place in Section 3 would be stopping the A-C run game and spread-

ing the field on offense.

For the game, A-C rushed for 340

yards and completed one pass for 54 yards and another score. For the Tide, quarterback Matt McCleary completed 10 of 29 passes for 136 yards. Ryan Redding and Terrance Elliott each caught four passes.

VOLLEYBALL In their last two matches, the volleyball team lost to Northern Lebanon, on Sept. 20 and the Lititz Christian School, Sept. 24.

The win was Northern Lebanon’s first of the season by a score of 25-14, 25-14, 25-17.

Onyx Rodriquez had 10 digs lead the Tide girls. Mowrer was credited with six assists and Desiree Torres had four kills.

Against Lititz Christian, the Tide was also swept, losing 25-7, 25-16 and 25-9.

In game one, Amanda Torres served an ace, while in game two, she served three points as the Tide had a couple of leads in the game. Serving two points each were Desiree Torres, Mowrer and Lillian Wickenheiser.

TENNIS As the regular season comes to a close, the Tide lost to Octorara 7-0 on Sept. 21. Number two singles’ player Grace Misciagna lost a three set match. The team also faced Lancaster Mennonite last Wednesday and fell short 4-1. Brittnie Betteley and Misciagna put up a good fight before coming up short.

CROSS COUNTRY Last week, the Tide teams traveled to Linden Hall for an invitational. All four runners placed in the nine team event.

With the lack of a full team, the Tide can’t compete as a full squad. So far through two meets, the four runners have placed in the top 25.

FOOTBALL On Friday September 21st the Golden Knight football team hosted the Dover Eagles in a YAIAA Division II showdown. For the third week in a row Eastern York found themselves on the wrong side of the final, dropping to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in division play thanks to a 31-21 loss.

The Golden Knights were able to put some points on the board with three Trevor Seitz TD passes equaling Eastern’s point total from the previous two games combined. Unfortunately, Dover held Eastern York to 165 total yards while racking up 396 yards that included a whopping 258 rushing yards. Dover’s signal caller, Justin Johnson spearheaded the Eagle attack, finishing with 77 rushing yards to go with 130 passing yards.

Demonte Martin finished the loss as Seitz’s favorite target, catching five balls for 72 yards and two of Eastern’s three scores. Dylan Zurin snagged three balls for 69 yards and provided the final Eastern York touchdown.

The first was off a penalty kick at 21:13 with the second coming in the 63rd minute from distance. The Lady Warrior attack put Savannah Yingst under constant pressure, racking up 22 shots and 11 corner attempts, leading to a nine save game for the keeper.

VOLLEYBALL Throughout the history of sports many have tried to find a cure to shake the funk after a loss and no matter the proposed solutions the best remedy remains winning. The Lady Golden Knights followed that remedy perfectly, winning three straight matches plus their inaugural “Spikes 4 Tykes� tournament, all to shake off a September 18th loss to West York.

Eastern York did have to wait two full days before they could attempt to shake off the West York loss and despite a sluggish start that resulted in a 28-26 game one final the Lady Golden Knights prevailed over Kennard-Dale 3-0. After that opening set Eastern settled in to post wins of 2515 and 25-9 to finish off the sweep. “The first game was a little off, but we pulled it together and played strong the other two,� said head coach Josh Korb. “The last set was just fun to watch. We did a great job serving and distributing the ball around nicely on offense.�

The Lady Golden Knights took a break from regular season action on Saturday September 22nd to host their first annual “Spikes 4 Tykes Tournament� with proceeds benefitting the Four Diamonds Fund through Eastern York’s Mini-THON. Eastern enjoyed the friendly confines to capture

the championship, topping Cedar Cliff in the title bout.

Two days later the Lady Golden Knights had what Korb called, “a big win� over Division I’s second place squad, the Dover Lady Eagles. It was a back and forth five setter with Eastern playing strong on both ends leading to 45 kills and 61 digs and wins of 2519, 25-21 and 15-12. Dover managed 25-15 wins in games two and four to force the decisive fifth set. Sarah Moore posted a team high 19 kills, adding nine digs while Olivia Koicuba anchored the defense with a team high 16 digs. Koicuba added four aces and two assists to her standout defensive game. Abby Smith backed up Moore with a 16 kill effort while a pair of Morgan’s provided Koicuba’s backup. Morgan Dobbeck finished with 12 digs while Morgan Winter added three, two aces and 14 digs. Katie Lehman played distributor perfectly, finishing with 32 assists and seven digs in the win.

Eastern wrapped up their threegame winning streak on September 25th with a 3-0 victory over Susquehannock. The Lady Golden Knights did hang on for a 25-22 game two win but handled games one (25-17) and three (25-11) with ease. Lehman (26 assists, six digs, four aces), Moore (13 kills, four digs, one assist), Smith (10 kills, two digs) and Koicuba (14 digs, four aces, one kill) kept their spots at the forefront to help secure the sweep.

He works to help leaders understand how to craft their messages in a way that best connects with today’s students. With Dr. Tim Elmore, McPeak wrote “Marching Off The Map,� which

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) offers training each year to interested athletes who would like to further their knowledge as a Global Messenger, Athlete Representative, Health and Fitness Coordinator, or Coach.

Athletes must attend workshops and complete the necessary requirements. Each year, athletes who have completed

their specific training are then honored at SOPA Leadership Weekend and graduate as part of the Athlete University class.

Forecast Event Posted The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) will host its 19th annual Healthcare Forecast Breakfast on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.

Columbia High School Announces 2018 Homecoming Court Columbia High School (CHS), 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia, is celebrating homecoming with an array of activities, including a pep rally, a formal homecoming dance, and the crowning of the 2018 homecoming queen.

The celebration includes Spirit Week dress-up days such as America Monday, Tie-Dye Tuesday, College Wear Wednesday, Crimson and Gold Thursday, and Pink Out Friday. The homecoming court candidates will be involved in a pep rally set to take place during school on Friday, Oct. 5, to honor the fall sports teams.

The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime during the football game against Ephrata on Oct. 5. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at the CHS stadium. Jordan Haberstroh, the 2017 CHS homecoming queen, will pass her crown to the 2018 queen.

A homecoming dance will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. in the CHS gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 6. “Enchanted Forest” will be the theme for the dance.

The six homecoming queen candidates were selected based on a vote from members of the entire student body. Members of the senior class, together with CHS faculty members, will vote on the queen. The candidates are Mya Black, Trinity Cover, Rosalie Gilbert, Melanie Rodriguez, Onyx Rodriguez, and Madison Simpson.

Mya Black of Columbia is the daughter of Joan Stephens and Joseph Black. She has been a class officer since freshman year and currently serves as class president. She plays volleyball and is a member of National Honor Society (NHS) and the Student2Student mentoring program and has been a member of the volleyball team, cheerleading, and Junior Achievement. Mya is a Columbia Borough Junior Council member and an Attollo Scholar. After graduation, she plans to attend Kutztown University to study mathematics education. She will be escorted onto the field by her brother, Kalen Veres.

Trinity Cover of Columbia is the daughter of Sonya Cover and Mike Cover. She has been involved in CHS drama department fall plays and spring musicals since freshman year. She is class secretary and vice president of NHS. Trinity is a member of Student Council, International Thespian Society, Empowering Women Club, CHS Speaks, and Columbia Borough Junior Council and plays flute in the marching band.

Trinity is an Attollo Scholar and part of the varsity cheerleading squad, and she also plays lacrosse for Dayspring Christian Academy.

Her post-graduation plans include attending St. Bonaventure University to play Division 1 lacrosse and study premed in preparation to become an emergency room doctor. She will be escorted at the game by her father.

Rosalie Gilbert of Columbia is the daughter of Bruce Gilbert and the late Anita Dishman.

She is a member of the CHS varsity cheerleading squad, Empowering Women Club, and CHS Speaks.

Rosalie volunteers within her church community and has been named as Student of the Month at various times throughout her high school career.

She is an Attollo Scholar. She has also been a member of the volleyball team and the CHS Book Club and participated in the Junior Achievement Heroes program. After graduation, she would like to attend Bloomsburg University to major in secondary education, specializing in history, with hopes of eventually obtaining her doctorate degree and teaching at the college level. She will be escorted by her father, and her grandmother, Elizabeth Dishman, will be waiting on the field to honor the memory of Rosalie’s mother.

Melanie Rodriguez of Columbia is the daughter of Nydia Rodriguez and Anthony Rodriguez. She is a member of the marching band and serves as the brass section leader.

She is president of Student Council and NHS and also serves as class vice president.

Melanie is part of the softball and bowling teams. She has been a member of the pit orchestra for CHS musicals since sophomore year, is an Attollo Scholar, and is involved in Junior Achievement and the Student2Student mentoring program. Melanie has studied at USA Martial Arts and is a first degree black belt.

After graduation, she plans to attend Towson University to major in music education. At the game, she will be escorted by her father.

Onyx Rodriguez of Columbia is the daughter of Star Rodriguez and Yamil Rodriguez Sr. She is captain of the varsity cheerleading squad and captain of the varsity volleyball team. She coached Columbia Boys Athletic Association (CBAA) B-Team cheerleading for two years and was named the 2016 May Princess. Her post-graduation plans are to attend a four-year college to major in neonatal nursing or early childhood special education. Her escort for the game will be her brother, Yamil Rodriguez Jr. Madison Simpson of Columbia is the daughter of Abriel Simpson and Raymond Simpson. She is a member of the Student2Student mentoring program and founder of the Empowering Women Club and CHS Speaks.

Madison is a Columbia Borough Junior Council member and has an internship with state Rep. Dave Hickernell. She is an Attollo Scholar, is a member of Attollo’s start-up business program, and was the pitch winner for their company, FLOW. After graduation, she would like to attend Franklin and Marshall College to study political science and government before pursuing a law degree. At the game, she will be escorted by her father.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has appointed Jonathan Shoff as interim director of Prelude Music and Kit Baker as director of Choristers I and II. Prelude Music and Choristers are nonauditioned programs with opportunities for children in kindergarten through grade eight.

In the MCCL community, Shoff serves as director for Men’s Ensemble and accompanist for Chamber Choir and in the past has served as interim director for Choristers. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Millersville University with a concentration in piano and a minor in voice, as well as a Master of Music from West Chester University. Shoff teaches elementary school music in the School District of Lancaster. He teaches private

instrumental and voice lessons and serves as artistic director for the Music for Everyone Lancaster Community Chorus.

Baker served as interim director of Choristers last year.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College and completed a master’s degree in music education from Kent State University.

Baker teaches general music and chorus for elementary grades in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. She is a former singer with the Susquehanna Chorale. Her husband, Dan, is an MCCL alumnus.

MCCL serves more than 170 singers in its two nonauditioned classes and three auditioned performing choirs. The performing choirs involve singers in Carol Choir, grades two through five; Concert Choir, grades six through eight;

and Chamber Choir, grades nine through 12. They practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. The nonauditioned classes meet on Tuesday nights for 10 sessions each semester and join with the performing choirs to participate in one spring concert.

Rock Ford Posts Theatrical Production Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will host a theatrical presentation titled “Tales From the Caretakers: The Haunted History of Rock Ford Plantation” in October. The one-act play will be performed at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, and at 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Evan Lloyd Cooper and Cynthia Charles, who are known for their work at Theater of the Seventh Sister, Ephrata Performing Arts Center and other venues, will act in the lead roles of husband-and-wife caretakers. The characters were inspired by an actual couple who lived in and cared for Rock Ford during the 1930s and 1940s before the house was opened to the public as a museum.

In the play, the caretakers will

lead visitors on a candlelit tour of the mansion and share stories about Rock Ford and its inhabitants since the early 19th century. The show was originally performed at Rock Ford in 2013.

Performances are limited to 20 people, and reservations are required. The event is not recommended for children under age 12.

Organizers will also offer a free baggage claim service so participants may check a bag or clothing item before the race that they would like to have waiting for them at the finish line.

Children ages 3 to 12 may take part in the quarter-mile Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, named after the Marine Corps’ bulldog mascot. Race-day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. at Columbia Crossing, and the run will take off at 9 a.m. Those who register online by Oct. 15 will receive a T-shirt, medal, and goodie bag. Youths who register on race day will receive a medal, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

An awards ceremony, including time to honor and recognize veterans for their service and sacrifice, will begin at approximately 9 a.m. at Columbia Crossing. Cash prizes will be given to the overall male and female winners, as well as to the first-place masters male and female finishers (age 50 and up). The top three finishers in various five-year age range cate-

gories will receive awards, too.

Proceeds from the event will support outreach programs for veterans in the greater Lancaster County area. Mike Mastriania, commandant for the Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294, noted that the organization offers assistance to homeless veterans of Lancaster County who have served in any branch of the military. For example, the group recently helped a Gulf War veteran and his family to secure an apartment and purchase furniture. The Marine Corps League also works with organizations such as Transitional Living Center (TLC) Lancaster and United Veterans Beacon House.

Marine Corps League members provide a meal and bingo event once a month for veterans at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, along with collecting clothes, books, and suitcases for individuals at both the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra has moved its offices to a new location in downtown Lancaster.

Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m.

This fall’s lineup includes baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb.

The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods.

The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they

use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling.

It takes at least 150 people to cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster.

The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has offices in the Masonic Center. Pie sale pro-

ceeds account for about 40 percent of the center’s operating budget, said director Heather Hinkel. The center serves students in first through 12th grades from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Chester counties, remediating dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham method. All instruction is provided individually at no charge to clients, but it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one client for a year.

Bethel UMC To Host Potpie Supper Bethel United Methodist Church (UMC), 1674 Furnace Road, Brogue, will host its annual fall chicken potpie supper on Saturday, Oct. 6. The meal, served family style, will be available beginning at 3:30 p.m.

In addition to potpie, the meal will include peas, coleslaw, applesauce, desserts, and beverages. Carryout meals and quarts of potpie will be available beginning at 4 p.m.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) is accepting registrations for its two non-auditioned programs: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through grade one, and Choristers I and II for grades two to eight.

These classes provide vocal instruction that expands the musical, social, and spiritual growth of every singer. Classes meet Tuesday evenings from late September through November and again from late January through April.

MCCL serves more than 170 singers in its two non-auditioned classes and three auditioned choirs. The performing choirs include singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12. The performing choirs practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. The non-auditioned classes are led by interim director Jonathan Shoff and director Kit Baker.

The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) invites the community to listen to a Tuesdays at APA Podcast on “Recognizing Community Sustainability” on Friday, Oct. 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Conference Room 102 at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster.

The group will listen to the recorded podcast while following along with the accompanying PDF of the slides from the original presentation.

Fee-Free Cat Adoption Event Set In response to an elevated number of incoming cats, the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will offer a Free to a Great Home Fee-Free Cat Adoption Event at the shelter each day from Friday, Sept. 21, to Sunday, Oct. 7. Cats may be adopted from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

As a nationally recognized initiative, the Free to a Great Home program was created in 2005 to provide free cat adoptions to qualified adopters throughout the community. Adopters wishing to save a cat’s life through the Free to Great Home emergency cat adoption program must go through the same adoption screening process as any other adopter.

Once the adopter is approved, the cat adoption fee is waived. The

cat receives a health supplement, spaying or neutering prior to adoption, vaccinations and deworming medication, flea treatment, microchipping and chip registration, and a bag of pet food.

The free adoption event provides families with the ability to welcome a new furry friend into their home without needing to pay the standard adoption fee. Throughout the weekend, families can view, select, and meet-and-greet with cats that are available for adoption.
