The Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library are inviting the community to shop at the group’s annual fall book and jewelry sale. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Hellam Township Public Works building, 45 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kreutz Creek Library and the many programs it offers to area residents of all ages.

Thousands of used books will be neatly sorted into categories for ease of shopping. Books for children and young adults will be available, as well as adult fiction and nonfiction. Among the variety of genres will be history, biography, business, cookbooks, gardening, holidays, self-help, travel, and religious selections.

A variety of gently used jewelry, DVDs, CDs, audio books, and puzzles will also be for sale.

Shoppers are encouraged to come hungry.

Homemade baked goods, including cookies, whoopie pies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, fudge, and bread, will be available to purchase, along with

hot dogs and beverages.

In addition to fundraising a portion of the annual budget for the library, the Friends help to promote library awareness and work together to help improve and expand library service.

Currently the Friends are led by co-presidents Betty Bell and Elizabeth McKonly, vice president Laurie Ward, secretary Kimberly Judy, and treasurer Richard Blumenthal. New members are always welcome, and interested individuals may stop in at the library, located at 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, to inquire about joining.

Marietta Block Party Planned For Oct. 6

Some people may think of Community Bible Church (CBC), 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, as “that big church up on the hill,” but senior pastor Jeff Burkholder would like that to change. The mission of CBC is to love God, love others, and reach out. One way that CBC actively reaches out is through its Community Care Center, located at 54 W. Market St., Marietta, which houses a clothing bank for local residents.

“The clothing bank has been in existence for many, many years, but we want to see (the Community Care Center) develop into more than just that,” explained Burkholder.

quilts that we have created,” explained LMQG director of events Sue Althouse. “We have vendors that are artisans to appeal to everyone, not just quilters, hence the name Quilt Show and Artisan Market.”

The vendors at the QSAM will include makers of pottery, wooden bowls and carvings, handweavings, glassworks, jewelry, clothing made from upcycled materials, and more, as well as several with quilting/ sewing supplies and vintage buttons. Photos and information about the vendors are being posted on the LMQG Facebook page throughout September. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/LancasterMQG to view the posts. Althouse noted that some vendors will only accept cash.

The QSAM will offer opportunities to win gift baskets, large and small quilts, and a new Bernina sewing machine. The winning tickets will be drawn between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Bucky’s BBQ food truck will be on-site, selling meat-based and vegetarian dishes, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Groff’s Candies and Sugar Goddess Patisserie will sell a variety of sweet treats.

Additionally, the QSAM will include a display of quilts made by LMQG members and two quilting classes taught by LMQG members. “We added classes because one of our goals is to educate and share our knowledge (and) talents with others,” Althouse said.

“Sew You Want to Create a Modern Quilt” will be taught by LMQG past president Kathy Dunkle from 9 to 11:30 a.m. “(It) may appeal to those who are new to modern quilting or those who would like to stretch themselves with new ideas in creating a

modern quilt top,” Althouse said. “Participants will be sewing with Berninas supplied

by Hinkletown Sewing, one of our vendors.”

Award-winning quilter Cindy Carey will take students through her design process in the class “Quilting a Modern Quilt,” which will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. Althouse noted that this class might appeal to newcomers to quilting as well as those who would like more ideas on how to quilt the completed top.

A small fee will be charged for admission to QSAM, and there will be an additional cost to attend the classes. Registration is required, as space is limited, and may be completed by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for the name of the class.

The proceeds from the QSAM will be used to support LMQG programs and charity projects. Each year, the guild hosts several national speakers at events throughout the year; this year’s notable guests include Deb Grifa, Beth Reese, and Sherri Lynn Wood.

The charity projects include making port protectors and mastectomy pillows for WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital Center for Women’s Health, lap quilts for veterans, placemats for Ephrata Meals on Wheels, and fundraising quilts for the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice & Community Care, and the Penn Manor Education Foundation’s Strong and Healthy Families initiative.

The LMQG typically meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville. Some months, the meeting is held on a Saturday if the speaker is also doing a workshop.

Canoemobile staff will guide each 24-foot canoe for an approximately 30-minute paddle on the Susquehanna River. Canoes will go out on a rotating schedule, with the last canoe departing Columbia River Park at 2 p.m.

Dellinger from pg 1 Ryan Dellinger, son of Steve and Molly Dellinger, received his Eagle Scout Rank Award recently at St. James Lutheran Church, 180 W. Market St., Hellam.

George Gayman, Scoutmaster of Troop 49, presented the award to Ryan, who was Gayman’s 75th Eagle Scout recipient. Ryan’s Eagle Scout project involved the construction of a permanent ramp leading to the entrance of St. James. Among those who contributed materials, equipment, and labor to the project were contractor Steve L. Dellinger, excavation and concrete work; Walter W. Zeigler’s Sons Inc., concrete; and Standard Concrete, stone and reinforcement.

Ryan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite School in June 2019. During high school, he was a member of the concert and jazz bands and the chess team. He has also been involved with Penn State’s THON, Four

Diamonds, and Make-A-Wish. Ryan plans to enroll in Penn State York to study information sciences and technology at a later time.

In 2018, Ryan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. He has had chemotherapy, radiation, and T-cell therapy (immunotherapy) and is now recovering from a bone marrow transplant at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

Central Bark Plans Grand Opening Central Bark, a doggy day care franchise, has announced the grand opening of Central Bark York on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Central Bark York, an 8,000square-foot space located at 3615 E. Market St., is owned by franchisees Jen Hicks and Eleesa Collins, who were both born and raised in York.

Hicks and Collins met seven years ago while working as wedding supervisors.

They decided to leave the worlds of accounting and home health care to open their own business by purchasing a Central Bark franchise.

CBC outreach coordinator Dave Poteat suggested hosting a block party outside the center this fall as a fun way to interact with those living in the vicinity of the center. “The purpose of the block party is twofold: One, we want to legitimately throw a fun party for the people of Marietta,” Burkholder shared. “But at the same time, we want to show people around (the Community Care Center) and have discussions on how we can use the center to meet their needs.”

Everyone is invited to attend the block party, set to take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, in the first block of West Market Street, from the S-bend to the square.

Live music and entertainment, carnival games and prizes, bounce houses, and an inflatable obstacle course will all be ready for residents to enjoy at no cost.

The pastors of CBC will all take turns sitting in a dunk tank, and Poteat

noted that classic games like Plinko and a ring toss will all be offered.

Food and beverages will be available to purchase from local vendors.

CBC members will be on hand to give tours of the Community Care Center. “This is a way to begin to build bridges in the borough,” commented Burkholder.

For anyone in need of clothing, the clothing bank at the Community Care Center is open to shoppers from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Anyone is welcome to choose items they need from a selection that includes men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories. The clothing bank is designed to help meet the physical needs of not only Marietta residents but anyone living in the surrounding area who is in need of clothing.

First Dam Bridge Challenge Posted Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association (LSRA) will present the inaugural Dam Bridge Challenge on Saturday, Sept.

28. The event will feature three different races on the Susquehanna River at Lake Clark. All races will start and finish at Lock 2 Recreation Area, 2100 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville. Following the races, live music, beverages, and food will be

offered around Shank’s Mare property.

The races will include a 1-mile race, a 3.5mile race, and a sprint from Lock 2 to Fishing Creek and back. The pre-race meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. The main event will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the second race at 10:20 a.m. and the third race at 10:40 a.m.

Visitors to the annual Pig Iron Fest and Car Show on Sunday, Sept. 29, will have a chance to see the vital role that river towns like Marietta and Columbia played in America’s Industrial Revolution. Young Knights See Improvement Despite Losses

New coaches are often thrust into less than desirable situations, after all, lack of wins is a very common reason the old coach is no longer around.

Enter Eastern York’s JJ Heiland who is the new head man of the boys’ soccer team that finished the 2018 season with a 4-13-1 record.

The Golden Knights earned their lone tie of the season on September 11th but followed with three straight losses. The most recent came on the 16th via a 6-0 final handed out by West York. Ethan Nikolaus finished the loss with nine saves.

As for the tie on the 11th, Eastern and Dover were unable to separate from each other and

finished deadlocked at 2-2 despite playing 100 minutes of soccer.

Gavin Donnelly netted both Eastern goals while Nikolaus turned away 10 shots to earn the draw.

In between was a 9-0 loss to Susquehannock on the 12th where Nikolaus managed another 10 saves.

“Susquehannock is a good team, well coached and disciplined,” said Heiland. “Unfortunately we came out a little flat but continued to battle and play hard the entire game. We’re very proud of our team. They’re fighting through injuries and in a difficult part of our schedule.”

The Knights suffered another setback on the 14th, this one by a 5-2 final against York Suburban. Donnelly picked up both Eastern goals in the second half of play but the Trojans had already built a 4-0

cushion by that point. Nikolaus finished with nine saves.

With his squad in the middle of a 0-6-1 stretch Heiland is keeping his troops focused.

“Our message is simply keep your heads up, keep moving forward, taking the season one game at a time.

It’s a long season, we’re a good young team who’s getting better every day.”

FOOTBALL The game of football can be maddening, exciting or both at the same time, depending on which sideline you are sitting behind. The Golden Knight faithful found themselves in the ‘maddening’ camp during Eastern York’s home tilt with York Suburban on September 13th as the Trojans collected a 42-7 victory on their way out of town.

getting their offense going against the undefeated Trojans, finishing with a mere 109 yards. Meanwhile Suburban racked up 328 yards with 223 of that coming on the ground. The discrepancy in offensive output led to the Golden Knights trailing all game and by as much as 42-0 in the final frame.

That is when Zachary Dice broke free for a 55-yard touchdown, accounting for the bulk of his team high rushing total as well as Eastern’s lone score.

Liz Heistand’s successful extra point set the final at 42-7.

Dice finished with 82 yards on 11 carries and the one TD. York Suburban’s stringy defense held the white-hot combo of Kaleb Corwell and Trevor Seitz in check so much so that the pair combined for just 45 yards of offense. Corwell accounted for the bulk of that total with 36 rushing and six receiving yards.

VOLLEYBALL It was a one step forward, one step

back type of week for the Eastern York girls’ volleyball team. On September 12th the girls earned a 3-0 win over York High. Eastern was able to cruise to wins of 25-7 and 25-11 in the opening two games and wrapped up the sweep with a 25-20 game three victory.

“I sat most of my varsity for the night and had some very promising 9th and 10th graders step up and make some great plays,” said head coach Josh Korb. “I feel confident in the direction the program is heading and we definitely have a strong future.”

the game and should be a good momentum builder in moving forward.

The team is 1-2 in the section and 2-2 overall on the year.

Coach Kyle notes that the boys have goals, and while he is not very vocal about them one has to think it is reaching the playoffs. He points out that the team knows they need to compete for all four quarters and get a few more wins to accomplish the goals they set at the beginning of the season.

VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team did not jump on the same wave as the football team as they dropped two matches last week to Cocalico and York Tech.

The girls faced Cocalico first, losing 25-12, 25-9, and 25-8.

Amanda Torres had nine digs for the Tide and Mercy Gonzalez contributed one kill, two service aces, and two assists in the loss. Malina Mowrer, Kamron Andrews and Morgan Bigler each added a kill on the night.

Next the girls faced York Tech in a nonleague battle. Things were looking bright as Columbia barely dropped the first set 25-22 and then took the second set 25-19 but ran out of gas down the stretch as York won the next two sets 25-13 and 25-12.

Gonzalez led the way with four service aces and 13 digs. Mowrer had three kills and Brynn Spiese contributed three assists.

On the year Gonzalez has seven kills, nine service aces, and three assists to go along with her 45 digs.

Torres has two service aces and nine digs on the season while Bigler added three kills and three assists.

The girls are winless on the year but have more opportunities, with seven more games, to change that.

TENNIS On the Tennis courts, Columbia is still looking for that first win as they dropped another pair last week, falling to Hanover and to Pequea Valley.

The match against Hanover came down to the wire in a hard-fought 3-2 battle.

Brooke Haldeman took care of business winning her match 4-6, 6-0 and then eventually taking the tiebreaker 11-9. She again did her job with Cleo Grove by her side winning their doubles matchup 8-2 to account for the Tide’s two team points.

CROSS COUNTRY Anthony Palmisaro, in a field of 51 runners, clocked an 18:47 and finished in 11th place at the Ben Blouser Invitational held at Big Spring on Sept. 14. He was

For the girls’, Emily Gambler finished in 23rd place with a 23:36 and was the fifth freshman to place.

Cassidy Cook followed in 34th place with a time of 24:36 while freshman Mallory Conroy’s 27:31 was good for 52nd place.

Last Tuesday at Donegal, Palmisaro once again was Columbia’s top finisher, placing eighth in 20:10.

Eastern kept things close thanks to a strong defensive effort that produced 52 digs and six blocks but also losses of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19. Alyssa Noll led that defensive effort, adding two aces to her team high 10 digs. Moore and Willich both posted their typical all-around game with Moore tallying seven digs, three kills, one ace, one block and one assist while Willich finished with 15 assists, five digs, one ace and one block.

Madison Shimmel (eight digs), AJ Waltemyer (seven digs), Jaide Fotchman (seven digs) and Elise Sprenkle (four digs) played major roles on the defensive side while Abby Smith joined Moore and Willich with a game that included four kills, four digs, three blocks and one ace.

turning a tight 1-0 affair into a 3-0 blowout. Shetter tacked on the final score with just over five minutes remaining for the 4-0 final.

In order to get to the team’s third win of the season, the Lady Knights had to endure losses to Susquehannock and York Suburban. The 4-2 loss to Susquehannock on September 12th was a difficult pill to swallow. The Lady Warriors scored late in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into intermission but the Lady Golden Knights came out hot in the second half. Shetter knotted the game with just over 15-minutes remaining with Makenna Sutherland moving Eastern in front on a penalty kick four minutes later. Five Yingst saves were not enough as Susquehannock ripped off three unanswered goals to steal the 4-2 win. “Couldn’t be more proud of my team,� said head coach Christina Crumling, before adding, “hats off to Susquehannock for their momentum the last eight minutes.�

Eastern York had a similar, but not as heartbreaking, ending play out in their 5-2 loss to York Suburban on the 14th. After seeing the Lady Trojans build a two goal lead, Eastern struck back with Sutherland finding the back of the net off a free kick with 31:15 remaining. Suburban answered with three straight goals to ensure victory for the home team. Abigail Henise tacked on one final score with 2:02 showing on the clock to set the final.

Yingst had just one save in the loss.

FIELD HOCKEY Winning is the preferred outcome for either side of the match-up in a high school sporting event and the Eastern York field hockey team has done a lot of winning so far in 2019. The Lady Golden Knights sit at 6-2 just shy of the midway point of the season with all six wins coming as part of a winning streak.

The sixth and final victory of the streak came on the 13th via a 5-1 thumping of Kennard-Dale. Eastern did all their heavy lifting in the opening half with Morgan Arnold and Lily Campbell netting two scores each. Campbell, with help from Addy Malone, opened the scoring just 7:34 into the game. A few minutes later Campbell flipped to the

dishing side of the equation, finding Arnold for a 2-0 lead. Arnold went solo for her final score, making it 3-0 with 8:32 remaining in the opening half.

KD’s lone score broke up Kelsey Felix’s (six saves) shutout bid but did little to alter the outcome. Campbell used a Hannah Lentz pass for her second goal while Malone capped the outburst with help from Campbell just over two minutes before intermission.

A few days earlier the Lady Golden Knights topped West York by a 3-0 final.

Malone was the star of the show, not so much for scoring two of the three goals and assisting on the third but more so for the lasting effect of those goals. Malone entered the contest tied with 1999 graduate Lauren Potoski for the career lead with 44 goals. That meant the senior’s first strike which came 6:37 into the second half moved her into sole possession of first place on that career scoring list. She added another score with help from Campbell that came with a tick over 13 minutes remaining. Malone also found time to setup Shae Forry’s goal with 16:09 left in the game.

Head coach Kelsey Felix had plenty to say after the game, both about Malone and the three-goal burst that led to the win. “Addison has worked hard to improve her hockey skills and to become one of the key offensive leaders on the team. Her dedication and perseverance has helped her in the achievement of this goal. “During the game, we experienced a weather/ lightning delay towards the end of the first half. It allowed us to discuss what we needed to fix and readjust our game plan.�

That winning slowed a bit on September 16th with a 2-1, overtime loss, to Bermudian Springs. The Lady Eagles controlled the action leading to a 22-0 edge in corner attempts and a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Cottage is a ministry of Millersville Community Church that was recently formed to meet the need for safe housing for women and children in the Penn Manor School District.

“We have a little more than $25,000 in the bank,” said The Cottage co-founder and marketing director Diane Duell. “Our goal is to raise $100,000 by 2021.”

Duell explained that she and her team, which includes co-founder and vice president Judy Schroeder, have been working aggressively to raise funds to appeal to people and organizations that might invest in the ministry.

The team has been working with a local real estate agent to evaluate the program’s needs and what might be available. The Cottage would ideally own a home that would provide respite for women and children who find themselves in difficult situations.

The Cottage leaders are planning a concert in the spring. Prior to that, however, Schroeder and Sarah Hamblin have coordinated a craft and vendor show set for 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the church’s Grace campus, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville.

“I often go to craft shows in the fall and thought it would be a great way to raise money for The Cottage,” Schroeder said.

Hamblin noted that the event’s two-day format has been patterned off a sale previously hosted by the youth group.

The church has 50 spaces for vendors, who will be spread throughout the building. A few

Information will also be available on dental hygiene, Alzheimer’s disease, REAL ID and more.

Jewelry made from seaglass and upcycled and repurposed materials, as well as steampunk and diffuser items, will also be available.

In addition to the crafters and vendors, the event will feature a silent auction that will conclude at 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Items that will be sold to the highest bidders will include Longaberger gift baskets, jewelry, art, quilts, wallhangings, stained glass window art handmade in Kentucky, bar stools, and products donated by the show’s vendors.

“We’ve had a great outpouring from our people with items for the silent auction,” Duell marveled. “We thought we’d have one small table, but it’s really blossomed.”

Along with donating items for the silent auction, church members have also contributed things for the congregation’s baked goods and craft tables, Hamblin among them.

“I’ve been Pinteresting these little felt creations,” Hamblin said, displaying a whimsical assortment of animals and other characters made from felt.

As no sale is complete without refreshments, Schroeder and Hamblin have made plans for a baked potato bar, hot dogs, and baked goods to be available both days. A continental breakfast, as well as coffee and tea, will be offered on the morning of Sept. 28.

The Cottage leaders hope the craft and vendor sale will become an annual event.

“The passion we have for the project itself makes us want to be successful, and a lot of prayer has helped,” Schroeder commented.

Volunteers Sought For Parade Volunteers are needed for the 23rd annual Millersville Community-University Parade on Saturday, Oct. 26. Those invited to help include, but are not limited to, local residents, businesses, church groups, Rotary groups, women’s clubs, high school students, and Millersville University alumni.

The parade route is 2 miles in length beginning at Penn Manor High School and ending past Millersville University’s Student Memorial Center on James Street.

The parade annually attracts more than 2,000 participants and more than 17,000 spectators.

Dozens of volunteer positions are available, including banner carriers, division assistants, and inflatable costume characters. Volunteers may also assist with the line-up of entries, distribute flyers, and answer spectators’ questions.

Volunteer service times vary depending

on assigned job, but the average time on Oct. 26 should not exceed four or five hours in the morning. Some positions require walking 2 miles. The Millersville Community-University Parade requires nearly 175 volunteers to run smoothly.

All volunteers will receive a free parade T-shirt and a free lunch after the parade. Mandatory instructional training will be held in the early morning on Oct. 26 at the cafeteria of Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave. Volunteers must be over age 16.

Community REACH Sets Programs

AgChoice Donates To Food Bank During its annual customer and community appreciation event held at the York Revolution ballpark, AgChoice Farm Credit’s York branch donated $250 to the York County Food Bank.

Children also received a wristband for games and activities at the ballpark. Kerstetter threw out the first pitch using an apple instead of a baseball, a callout to the area’s orchard harvest currently underway. During previous years’ events, AgChoice made similar donations to York County 4-H programs, in addition to supporting other local organizations throughout the year. The event will feature a walk-in format that will allow attendees to become informed about the international company located in York. Registration is not required.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon, Tabatha Valenti, nutrition education adviser, Penn State Extension, will present “Nutrition Information About Fruits and Vegetables.” Free samples and recipes will be available to all who attend.

The event will feature a walk-in format, so no registration is required.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, from 3 to 4 p.m., instructor Sam Neff will share “Computers and Technology for Beginners.” The session will focus on mouse and touch pad operation, an explanation of the computer desktop, and selecting programs for icons.

Computers will be provided for the class.

Registration is required.

On Friday, Oct. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., Carla Myers, director of human resources for the Eastern York School District, will present “Essential Skills for Employment.”

Participants will learn about current topics important for employability. Registration is required.
