Bargains galore at Fall Fest

There’s a trove of treasures waiting to be found at St. John’s Herr Estate when the retirement community hosts its annual Fall Fest. The event, which features an indoor yard sale and bake sale, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Luthercare senior living community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia.

“We have a bigger selection this year than we’ve ever had,” said volunteer Andrea Robinson. Gently used books, puzzles, household items, jewelry and more will be for sale.

“It’s all local items from residents and their families,” said resident Bob Herr.

A champion for children

For 26 years, Linda Stillinger ensured the safety of Kreutz Creek Elementary School children crossing the street at the corner of West Market and North Lee streets in Hellam.

Now Linda, who passed away in 2021, has been honored with a bridge in her name in Emig Park,

located along South Prospect Street in Hellam.

The borough contacted Linda’s husband, Charles, about a year ago, telling him about plans to move and rebuild a bridge that crosses Kreutz Creek in the park. Borough staff wanted to name the bridge “Linda’s Crosswalk.”

About 75 people, including friends, family members and former

will also be for sale, along with chicken corn soup, hot dogs, barbecue and drinks. The soup will be prepared by the chef at St. John’s Herr Estate and will be available to purchase by the bowl or quart for eat-in or takeout.

Proceeds from the event will support a variety of beneficiaries, said Robinson. “We support the benevolent fund, and we give money toward Christmas gifts for the staff and gifts for residents in personal care,” she stated. “Locally, we support Hands Across the Street, and we also support the Alzheimer’s Walk.”

Proceeds are also used for programs and activities at St. John’s. “We cover the cost of the entertainment at our residents’ New Year’s party,” said Carolyn Livingston. “The money will also support our library.” Residents

just cleaned out the library, selecting books to sell at the Fall Fest, she noted.

Volunteers have been working for months to sort and price items for the sale. “We’ve been meeting every Saturday morning since March,” Livingston shared. “We’ve been having so much fun getting ready for this. This is a really great group of volunteers.”

Resident Joni Leuck encourages people come to the Fall Fest, noting that it’s a fun opportunity to pick up a bargain. “Everything is reasonably priced,” she said, “and the event has a great sense of community.”

The Fall Fest will be held in the chapel at St. John’s, as well as in the rotunda, recreation room and main dining room. Free parking is available in a large lot.

Mac and Cheese Fest will serve up comfort food

Dig into some comfort food when the Merchants Association of Columbia (MAC) hosts its second annual Mac and Cheese Fest. It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, beginning at 6 p.m. at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St.

Thirteen vendors will participate in the competition, which invites the public to sample 2-ounce portions of macaroni and cheese from local restaurants and chefs. Participants will be Hinkle’s Restaurant, Black Olive Family Diner, The Golden

Whisk, Parma Pizza & Grill, Starview Brews, Bully’s Restaurant and Pub, Rose’s Deli and More, Union Station Grill, Prince Street Café, Griddles Malt Shoppe, Taco To Go, Chef Lex and South Lime Restaurant.

People will receive a tray with sample cups of each version of mac and cheese, said Daisy Pagan, vice president of MAC. “It’s a blind contest, so nobody knows which participant is which,” she explained. “Each sample will have a number, and people will receive a scorecard to vote on their favorite.”

students at Kreutz Creek Elementary, gathered in late August for a dedication of the bridge.

“My mom lived for this job,” said Linda’s daughter, Tina Sminkey. “She lived for the kids.”

Linda served as a crossing guard on the same corner from 1995 to 2021. She had no plans to retire, even though her family was concerned about her health and safety.

“She was getting up in age, and we didn’t like her being out in the middle of the street anymore,” Tina recalled. “She didn’t want to retire. She loved the job.”

Then, in November of 2020, Linda fell on the job and broke her shoulder. She had to take the rest of the school year off, and she decided to retire in May of 2021. She had a stroke in June of that year and passed away soon after at the age of 73.

During her two decades as a crossing guard, Linda became well-known for her dedication to the job and her sense of whimsy.

“She liked to dress like the Easter Bunny and Santa,” Tina shared. “She handed out candy canes and pencils at Christmas. My mom collected $2 bills, and sometimes, she’d give them to students on special occasions.”

Still, she took her job seriously, making sure her students were safe. “Safety was very important to her,” Tina said. “She took care of the kids.”

Throughout her life, Linda was dedicated not only to her elementary school students but also to the greater Hellam community.

“She and my dad were very involved with Hellam Fire Company,” Tina said. “She was very community oriented.”

She loved the community,

Tina noted, and the community loved her back. When the Stillingers’ home was destroyed by fire in 2010 and the family lost everything, including their cars, the community pitched in by raising funds to rebuild and offering emotional support.

Along with the bridge, Tina and Charles placed a bench dedicated to Linda in the park. It features a photo of her with two of the children she cared for and offers a spot for people to sit and watch their kids play on the nearby playground.

At the Emig Park gathering, people shared stories of Linda, socialized and reminisced about a person who made a difference every day.

The celebration included Linda’s stepson, Lee Stillinger, and local dignitaries, including Hellam Mayor Sue Horner.

“She loved children and this community,” Horner said. “She was kind, but stern, always making sure the children were safe. She was also known for saying, ‘Love you, God bless,’ to everyone. What a way for a child to start and end their day.”

Open space, land preservation grants available

The 2023 Open Space and Land Preservation Grant Program, as directed by the York County Commissioners, supports a variety of projects to protect open space, improve resource protection, acquire parks or natural lands and many other opportunities.

For example, municipalities and park authorities may apply for a grant to convert underutilized tennis or basketball court space into

pickleball courts to keep up with the demand of the sport, which is growing in popularity. Another use of a grant is to make sure everyone can access outdoor spaces through park improvements to align with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Since the start of the program in 2020, the York County Commissioners have dedicated funding to land preservation, with a benchmark goal

of protecting 2,500 acres of open space each year. Since its launch, the program’s efforts have assisted municipalities and nonprofit organizations in preserving and improving open space throughout York County.

Partners of the Open Space and Land Preservation Committee, in addition to York County and the York County Planning Commission, include the York County Agricultural Land Preservation Board, the Farm

and Natural Lands Trust of York County, the York County Conservation District, the York County Parks Department and other community partners with a mission for open space protection.

The Open Space and Land Preservation Grant Program funds have been awarded to a variety of organizations since the program launched in 2020. In 2022, Marcellus Shale

Historical society plans chicken and waffle dinner

The Maytown Historical Society will serve up comfort food at a fundraiser later this month. A chicken and waffle dinner will be held at the society’s museum, 4 W. High St., Maytown, on Saturday, Sept. 30, from noon to 5 p.m. The meal will be available for takeout or to enjoy outside in the yard behind the museum. In addition to homemade chicken and waffles, the dinner will include green beans, coleslaw, desserts, coffee and water.

This is the first time the historical society has held a chicken and waffle dinner, said Linda Good, vice president of the society, but the group members were inspired by a breakfast they organized earlier this year.

“That was very well received, and everything worked well with the breakfast, so we thought we’d try another meal,” Good explained. “We have some really great cooks who are part of the historical society, and Janie Garber is our head cook for this. She makes delicious chicken and waffles.”

Proceeds from the meal will help the society with ongoing projects, including raising funds to expand. The group is looking to either build onto its existing site or move to a larger space in Maytown.

“We have so many wonderful things we’d like to display, but we just don’t have the room to display them,” Good explained.

“We want to be able to show off what we have.”

The chicken and waffle meal also serves another purpose, she noted. “It’s a way for us to share what we do with the community and maybe get some young people involved,” she said. “We want to become a more active group and reach out to more people in the community.”

Good shared that a group of volunteers works weekly on digitizing, recording and storing artifacts and documents that come into the museum. She encourages anyone with an interest in Maytown’s history to consider joining the historical society.

“We are a group of people who are concerned about preserving our history,” she said.

“We want to promote and save all the history that’s happened in Maytown.”

The Maytown Historical Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year is Mayfest, a daylong celebration held in May. Good noted that organizers are already planning next year’s Mayfest, which she promises will be bigger and better than ever.

The historical society also holds public programs throughout the year. The next program will be held on Thursday, Oct.

19, at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. The organization will host a Christmas Gala at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14. The location of the gala is to be determined. Tickets for the chicken and waffle dinner may be purchased by calling Janie Garber at 717-940-0037. Advance tickets will be sold for a discount until Saturday, Sept. 23. Tickets will also be available at the door. There is no charge for children under age 5.

The winner will receive a “big cheese” trophy, Pagan said, noting that it’s in the shape of a piece of cheese. Trophies will also be awarded for first, second and third runners-up.

Last year’s winner, The Golden Whisk, is back to defend its title, Pagan noted, adding that Bully’s took first runner-up last year.

The idea for the festival began as part of a Discover Columbia event held in the town last year as a way to bring people into Columbia. “I wanted an event for that, and I thought about chili, but somebody else was doing a chili cook-off, so I thought, ‘What’s another comfort food?’ and I thought of macaroni and cheese,” Pagan remarked. “What’s better than mac and cheese?”

It was so popular last year

that organizers worried they might run out of food, but they were able to feed everyone. “We sold over 300 tickets last year,” Pagan recalled.

The mission of MAC is to increase foot traffic in Columbia, Pagan noted, adding that proceeds from the Mac and Cheese Fest will support the organization.

“We fund Fourth Fridays in Columbia,” she explained. “Every Fourth Friday is themed, and we try very hard to make sure the merchants are not having to put money out to participate.” MAC also operates a stand at the Market House that members are allowed to use once a month free of charge, so money from the fest will support that as well.

Pagan encourages everyone to come out to the Mac and Cheese Fest, noting that it’s a chance to sample a large portion for a small price.

“You might think 2 ounces

isn’t a lot of food, but last year, we only had seven participants, and I could not finish all seven samples,” she said. “It’s a whole lot of food.”

Vendors in the Columbia Market House will be encour-

aged to stay open during the fest for people to purchase additional food or drinks, and MAC will sell sodas and water. Tickets for the Mac and Cheese Fest will only be available at the door.

Building good habits through biking

When youths are riding bikes as part of Lifecycles, they are doing much more than getting some exercise.

As Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer explained, neurological research has emerged in the past few years showing that when you challenge yourself to do hard things and you complete them, you can actually change the way your brain works.

“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.

Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer.

One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from

Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other teams completed a 380-mile journey around Lake Champlain and Lake George on the border of New York and Vermont.

“They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”

Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.

“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who

wants to join can join.” Participants do not need to be experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed

in a group based on their skill level.

Legacy funds were also added to this program to ensure the distribution of funds to the appropriate recipients as determined by the requirements of Pennsylvania Act 13 of 2012.

Last year, Open Space and Land Preservation Grants were awarded to fund projects such as parkland acquisition in Franklin Township by the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy at Camp Tuckahoe; the development of a Master Site Plan for Camp Security in Springettsbury Township; and an access study of the Codorus Creek in Seven Valleys Borough by Seven Valleys Borough/Partnership for Economic Development.

Open Space and Land Preservation funds can assist with acquisition of parklands or natural lands,

and planning activities related to open space protection. This is also an opportunity to receive matching funds to leverage other grants for parkland acquisition or related planning activities.

Eligible applicants include any York County municipality, the York County Parks Department and nonprofit organizations with a 501(c) status that have a focus on natural resource protection land preservation, parks/recreation or conservation and have been established for at least five years. There is a 50% match requirement and funding award caps range to include up to $150,000 for land acquisitions and up to $25,000 for planning projects.

In 2022, Marcellus Shale Legacy funds were used to support pro-

grams including a community gardens project by the Glen Rock Recreation Board, ADA compliant kayak and canoe launch by Wrightsville Borough and park improvements involving toddler equipment, safety mats, fencing and an ADA swing by Manheim Township.

Marcellus Shale Legacy funds can assist with planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, natural areas, community conservation and beautification projects, community and heritage parks and water resource management. Funds may also be used to acquire lands for recreational or conservation purposes, and for land damaged or prone to drainage by storms or flooding.

Eligible applicants for Marcellus Shale funding include any municipality in York County, any nonprofit organization with a 501(c) status, York County departments and related county agencies and any school or school district in York County. There is no match requirement for Marcellus Shale funds; the grant maximum is $40,000.

The current application round for both Open Space and Land Preservation Funds and Marcellus Shale Legacy Funds is open until Saturday, Sept. 30. For additional information and to register to receive the application, visit www.yorkopenspace.org. He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confidence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging environment where boys and girls can discover more of their
