INSECTS AND SPIDERS
The Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, will host a program on insects and spiders on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m. The program is part the Vesta Naturalist Program series. Attendees will learn about numerous varieties of insects and spiders, where they live, and how some are considered pests while others are viewed as beneficial. The presenter will explain the characteristics of insects and spiders as well as the benefits provided by each. Options will include exploration walks to search for insects and spiders, insect eating, and insect dissections. EGYPTIAN FESTIVAL

The annual Ironville School reunion will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22. An informal meeting will be held at the Ironville Band Hall, 943 Prospect Road, starting at 1:30 p.m. Coffee, cake, and ice cream will be available. The event is open to all former Ironville School students and other interested individuals. Attendees will gather for fellowship and to reminisce about their school days at Ironville. Fall Fest Planned At St. John’s Herr Estate By Chelsea Peifer
The annual St. John’s Herr Estate (SJHE) Fall Fest, featuring an indoor yard sale and food sale, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. Plenty of free parking for the event will be available at the main building, located at 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Everything will be set up in the rotunda, chapel, and recreation room. Items for sale will include household goods, dishes and glassware, seasonal and holiday decorations, plants, linens, clothing, jewelry, purses, books, lamps, picture frames, tools, and more. “It’s huge, and we have tons of jewelry this year,” remarked resident and Fall Fest volunteer Anita Perrone. Food, including chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sandwiches, and beverages, will be available for purchase as well. Chicken corn soup may also be
purchased by the quart for carryout. Residents will also sell a variety of homemade baked goods. The event is sponsored by the SJHE Residents’ Council. All proceeds from Fall Fest will be donated to local nonprofit organizations such as Hands Across the Street, Columbia Quick Response Service, Luthercare’s Columbia Day Care Center, Power Packs Project, and the Columbia Public Library. Residents’ Council officers include president Carolyn Livingston, vice president Carole Hayes, secretary Barbara Slaughter, and treasurer Lee Nevers. The Residents’ Council meets once a month, hosts social events like an annual New Year’s Eve party, and participates in various fundraisers throughout the year in addition to Fall Fest, including sales of Christmas cookies, subs, Easter candy, and apple dumplings. On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Marietta Community House will host “An Evening in the Studio,” which will showcase both of its historic buildings at 264 W. Market St., Marietta.
