Matt Dorgan took heartbreak and turned it into hope and healing. On Dec. 3, 2020, his 15-year-old daughter, Brianna, died by suicide after a long struggle with mental health.
“Her passing shook us to our core,” he said, noting that close friends rallied around him but he knew he could not just simply move on. “As we shared our grief, we realized a painful truth: Every one of us had lost someone we loved to mental illness. And now, we had lost Brianna. We knew something had to change. We had to do something.”
In those first raw moments of heartbreak, the idea for a mental health festival was born, he recalled.
“We wanted to raise money, yes, but more than that, we wanted to raise awareness and build a real support network for those in crisis,” Dorgan shared. “Then came the words that changed everything: ‘We need to build the bridge.’ And just as quickly, someone shouted back, ‘For Brianna!’”
Just weeks after Brianna’s death, on Dec. 27, 2020, Building Bridges for Brianna began.
“Since that day, we’ve been committed to knocking down barriers to mental health care,” Dorgan explained. “When we see a wall in services, we don’t walk away. We find a way over it, around it, under it or straight through it.”
Describing his daughter, Dorgan noted that he could talk forever.
“Brianna was an incredible soul - kind, compassionate and full of love for people and animals alike,” he remarked.
Born in Key West, Fla., Brianna soon demonstrated a desire to help others, Dorgan said, sharing stories of Brianna’s giving spirit.
A passionate animal lover, Brianna constantly lobbied to turn her home into a zoo, her father joked, noting that she wanted a monkey or a pig as a pet but happily settled for a pet dog, Emma, who she brought home just one
week before her death.
An eighth-grader at Dallastown Area School District when she died, Brianna had a close-knit group of friends.
While cleaning her room after she passed, Dorgan found a simple white T-shirt with a powerful message: “Keep Fight;ing! I Believe in You You are a Star.”

Raven Ridge Wildlife Center’s very own Barron Von Vulture will get his day in the spotlight.
Barron, who lives at the center in Washington Boro, will be the featured guest when Raven Ridge commemorates International Vulture Awareness Day with a celebration that will take place Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.
Raven Ridge director Tracie Young said Sept. 6 will be a day nature centers and vulture conservancies around the world celebrate the large bird of prey.
Raven Ridge’s event, which will be held rain or shine, will feature games, crafts, and coloring contests. Food trucks will be on-site. There will also be two educational programs. Vendors will sell wildlife-related items. Raven Ridge Wildlife will sell merchandise including T-shirts, stickers, earrings, stuffed animals, prints, and home décor.
For more information, call 717-808-2652 or go to the nonprofit’s Facebook page, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center.
“It’s a day to raise awareness about vultures, but also it’s a free family event for the community,” Young said. “Come and learn about what we do, why we’re a valuable resource in our community, and learn about vultures. Vultures are misunderstood. A lot of people think they’re gross and disgusting, and they’re actually pretty neat, and they’re cleaner than we are.”
Young noted that Raven Ridge specialize in birds of prey - owls,

vultures, hawks, and eagles. “We’re currently covering 17 counties,” Young said. “We’re one of 13 centers in the state licensed to work with rabies vector species, such as foxes, skunks, and raccoons. Our goal is to bring in wildlife that is orphaned, abandoned, or injured and get them back out into the environment.”
All of Raven Ridge’s proceeds will go to taking care of the wildlife. “Being a nonprofit, we receive no state, federal or local funding,” said Young. “So it’s fundraisers like our big day of International Vulture Awareness Day and donations from the public that help us do what we do.”
Barron Von Vulture will be the star of the show when Raven Ridge Wildlife Center celebrates International Vulture Awareness Day.

Anyone who comes across an animal they think needs help can call or text 717-808-2652. “You can send pictures, or you can send texts to that phone number,” said Young. “A lot of people will reach out to us in Facebook Messenger. The great thing about everyone having cell phones is that they’re able to take pictures or videos of what they’re seeing and send them to us, and we can say, yes, that’s natural behavior for that animal, or no, it’s not. We can talk them through it or make sure that the animal gets to us for help.”
Educating the public is an important part of Raven Ridge’s mission. “We run a lot of education programs,” said Raven Ridge education coordinator Molly Snavely.
“We have 10 different education programs that run from all ages to preschool to elementary, high school, and then just ones for adults. We do those all year, and that’s a big part of how we raise money to be able to do.”
Snavely said Raven Ridge also staffs booths at other public events. “People can come up to us, and we can either bring animals or just hand out information,” she said. “Since (the wildlife center is) not open to the public, we rely on our education programs to be able to interact with people, and that’s the best way for us to do that.”

exactly how Brianna wrote it, he said.
“That message - raw, honest and filled with hope - has become the motto of Building Bridges for Brianna,” Dorgan commented. “It speaks not just to who Brianna was, but to the mission she unknowingly helped create: to remind people that they are not alone and they are worthy of love, support and healing.”
Building Bridges for Brianna, which serves all of Pennsylvania, held its first mental health festival in June of 2021. More than 1,500 people attended. Dorgan remembers open conversations about mental health and organizations completing real-time intakes and scheduling therapy sessions on the spot.
“That night, I spent nearly two hours answering emails, messages and phone calls from people thanking us for creating a space like that,” he said. “That was the moment we knew this couldn’t be just one event. It had to become a movement.”
The organization soon became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and began paying for co-pays; providing coping tools; offering Question, Persuade, Refer prevention training; and speaking publicly about mental health. Still, Dorgan always believed he could do more.
In its third year, the organization received a donation that helped to open the first office, hire licensed social workers and therapists and offer free or

reduced-cost mental health care. Within six months, the organization had outgrown the space.
Moving into a much larger office, the organization continued to grow.
“Since opening the new center, we’ve helped more than 400 people in our community get the mental health support they need,” Dorgan said of the headquarters located in Dallastown.
Dorgan, who works full time as a probation officer for the County of York in addition to running the nonprofit, emphasized the organization works hard to provide care quickly, elimi-
nating the red tape that can cause months-long delays via traditional routes to help.
Community support is needed in a variety of ways, from donating funds to volunteering, attending events or simply being there for someone who’s struggling.
The organization’s signature event, the Bridge Building Festival, is held every September in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Dallastown Community Park, 50 S. School Place.
“What started in 2021
with 35 vendors and 1,500 attendees has grown into a vibrant, community-powered event with over 100 vendors and more than 5,000 attendees,” Dorgan said. “The festival includes music, food trucks, local vendors, mental health organizations and a powerful sense of shared purpose.”
Also every September, the organization leads a Purple Light Campaign to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encouraging people to change their outdoor lights to purple ones to reflect one of the movement’s official colors.
Although the festival is
the organization’s biggest event, Dorgan emphasized that the nonprofit works year-round to promote positive mental health.
“Mental health isn’t a one-time conversation. It’s an everyday commitment. And we’re here, yearround, building the bridge between pain and healing, isolation and community, hopelessness and hope,” Dorgan said. “Brianna’s legacy is the bridge we’re building: one that connects people to the help, hope and healing they deserve.”

The Giant Company has announced that flu and pneumonia vaccinations are now available at all Giant and Martin’s pharmacies.
Walk-ins are welcome, but customers can also make an appointment if they prefer. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination annually, ideally by October. Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious complications from flu, including people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney
and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.
Giant and Martin’s pharmacies also offer pneumococcal vaccinations, which can be administered at the same time as a flu shot.
The CDC recommends the pneumococcal vaccination for all children younger than 5 years old and all adults age 50 years or older. It is also recommended for both children and adults with certain risk conditions.
Immunizations are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www .giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The family-friendly event will include a presentation titled “The Evolution of Rail” by Beth Anne Keates at 11 a.m. in the museum auditorium, followed by book signings in the lobby through the end of the day.
Keates is a volunteer for the West Chester Railroad and also marches annually as Betsy Ross in the Lansdowne parade. Keates has co-authored several books with Kenneth Springirth, including “Viewing SEPTA’s Rail Heritage,” “Stourbridge Lion to the Stourbridge Line,” “Union Pacific Railroad Heritage,” “Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Heritage,” and “Viewing Norfolk Southern Railway.”
A presentation called “The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at 50” by
Dodie Robbins, museum curator, will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. The event will also feature a railroad heritage craft activity table for kids and a Pennsylvania Railroad truck owned by Ken Briers, both present all day in Rolling Stock Hall. A number of the museum’s historic locomotives and railroad cars will also be open for visitors to experience.
Railroad Heritage Day activities are included in the regular museum admission.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a research library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, and a museum store. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628.
