The Columbia Public Library (CPL), 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia, recently received donations of two original pieces of artwork to display in its building at the main entrance and in the children’s area. Charles and Kay Leader, who served on the capital campaign for the new library building, purchased an alphabet painting created by artist Susan Davitti Darling that was added to the children’s area on Aug. 7. Kay, who served as librarian at CPL from 1989 to 1993, said that she and Charles have a heart for the library and the services it continues to offer the community. Darling, of Marietta, said that she drew inspiration for the piece from a poster that

her daughter’s first-grade teacher had hanging in her classroom. Darling is a mixed media artist and teaches at the York Art Assocation. Darling discounted the piece for the Leaders when she learned that they were interested in purchasing it for the library. Cle Berntheizel provided the frame and framing services for Darling’s painting, and he also played an instrumental role in the journey of the other new painting being added to the CPL, which opened its new building to the public in August 2018. Berntheizel is an artist and the owner of Garth, a Columbia art gallery, frame shop, café, and event space located at 22 S. Second St., Columbia.
