The Eastern York marching band, made up of 55 students in grades seven through 12, participated in 10-hour days of band camp at the school from July 29 to Aug. 9. The band will perform “Things That Go Pop” at football games and in competitions with the Independence Division of Cavalcade of Bands Marching Circuit.
“Band camp is very difficult and it takes a lot of effort, but you get out of it what you put into it,” said Eastern York marching band president Sarah Carbery, who is a senior at Eastern York High School (EYHS) and plays trumpet. She was among the 55 members of the Eastern York marching band who prepared for their new show, “Things That Go Pop,” during two weeks of camp at the high school from July 29 to Aug. 9. Drum major Abbie Wood, an EYHS junior who plays clarinet, said that for the past several years the marching band has done darker shows, but “Things That Go Pop” is a lighter, happier theme. The first movement features Katy Perry’s song “Firework,” followed by the second movement titled “The Question.” “It’s all about popping the question, so it’s kind of a ballad
romance thing,” described Abbie. Pop culture is the focus of the third movement. “I think the audience will like that they’ll recognize different tunes in there, like ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ and ‘99 Red Balloons’ and of course Katy Perry’s ‘Firework,’” said Abbie. Sarah said that she too is really excited for this year’s show. “Whenever the low brass plays the ballad, I feel it in my bones,” said Sarah. “It’s very pretty.” The marching band members persevered through 10-hour days filled with a predictably unpredictable summertime mix of scorching heat, humidity, overcast skies, and occasional thunderstorms. “A lot of times the weather can be really bad, but you get used to it,” said Sarah. “And we’ve had a lot less people complaining this year.” “We’re very positive,” agreed EYHS senior Jake Kennell, who plays marimba and is a percussion section leader.
