A Towering Treasure To say that the newest addition to the National Watch and Clock Museum will make a big impact is a bit of an understatement. At almost 19 feet tall, the two-dial Ansonia Street Clock (which the museum refers to as “Quincy”) is by far the tallest timepiece housed in the building, located at 514 Poplar St., Columbia.

The massive clock also took a long journey to come to its final resting place, where visitors can see the clock in person and learn about its history. “ The Ansonia Street Clock was first erected in 1887,” in Quincy, Ill., said Don Bugh, president of the Tower and Street Clock Chapter of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC).

The clock traveled 5,000 miles from where it was manufactured in Brooklyn, N.Y.; to Quincy; to Memphis, Mo.; to Los Alamos, N.M.; to Tampa, Fla.; and finally to Columbia.

“It was such a rare clock that there was no question that it should be preserved in the NAWCC Museum for future generations to see,” Bugh said.

The street clock is housed in the museum’s newly expanded Public Time gallery.

“The Quincy Gallery extension to the Public Time gallery added over 500 square feet,” Bugh shared. “ The Ansonia Street Clock is such an important addition that the space is used exclusively to display Quincy, its separately displayed movement, along with documented history and photos.”

The Quincy is the best of three surviving examples of an Ansonia street clock, and one of only two of its ornate design still in existence.

“We will have a DJ from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then two live bands - Michele Jameson from 3 to 6 p.m. and No Reply from 7 to 11 p.m,” said Mark Henise, Stars & Bars committee chairman. “And special this year in commemoration of 250 years of freedom, we will have a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.”

T he event w ill als o include a variety of food and drinks, including orange crushes, which will be new this year.

As Henise explained, the event has significant meaning for the VFW for several reasons.

“It is by far the most important fundraiser for the post, which provides us with the means to continue to support our community year after year,” he said. “It is also important to us to host an event that brings our local community together.”

the summer, but it’s now down to one day.

“It originally started as a fundraiser for the VFW scholarship fund for Eastern York High School graduates,” Henise said, but the event now raises funds for various community projects of the post.

He hopes people will come out for Stars & Bars, which he said promises to be a fun day.

“We have a relatively small group of volunteers who work ver y hard year-round to put forth an event that is fun for people of all ages and interests,” he remarked.

“We are trying some new things this year, and we encourage ever yone to come out and join us.”

Kreutz Creek Valley VFW Post 7045 is open to anyone who served in or is currently serving in a foreign war, campaign or expedition. The post also offers social memberships. The organization marks holidays such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day and holds events throughout the year, many of which are open to the public.

Singers to Perform in New York City The Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers will open for the “Christmas Spectacular” starring the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Nov. 21. The group planning to attend includes parents and community members who will also sing with the children at the performance.

Open to all singers ages 7 to 12, the Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers presents con-

T h e C i v i l A i r Pat ro l (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has announced that it will relocate to Alliance Aviation within the terminal of the Lancaster Airport in Lititz beginning in August. The squadron’s meetings will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which represents a change from the previous schedule.

The new location will provide a larger meeting space as well as a professional environment for cadet and senior member development. It will suppor t all three of C AP’s chartered missions: cadet programs, emergenc y ser vices, and aerospace education.

Cadet programs include leadership development, physical fitness, and character development for youths a ges 12 to 18. Emergency ser vices include training for search and rescue, disaster relief, communications, and also mission support training for qualified members.

Aerospace education includes STEM instruction, learning about aviation, and an aerospace curriculum for cadets and senior members. CAP also provides additional opportunities, such as f light training, encampments, and national special activities.

The relocation was made possible through the continued support and partnership of airport manager Ed Foster. The squadron remains committed to serving Lancaster County throu g h volunte er ing , youth development, and mission readiness.

Ball Game from pg 1 Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago.

“Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.”

More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.”

T he game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out.

“The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said.

“It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the s p o r t . A f t e r s e v e ra l years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.”

The ball closely resembles today’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it bare-handed. Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the first- and third-base lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory. That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes.

The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship.

built atop the borough’s former reser voir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throu g hout the 1920s and 1930s.

T he Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the K ey stones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games.

Portable restrooms will be available.

People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s.

The members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Penryn and St. Luke Lutheran Church in Schaefferstown are always looking for ways to connect with the wider community. T his year, they’re inviting everyone out for a carnival.

The carnival will be held at the Penryn church at 1258 Newport Road on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. It will feature food, fun and fellowship.

“We wanted to do something to give back to the community,” said pastor Angie Hammer, who serves at both churches. “This is a way to thank the community for their help with various projects we do and a way to support families in our community.”

For more than 100 years, the church has held a summer picnic, but this year that wasn’t possible due to updates needed at the picnic grove.

So, the church members pivoted and decided to take advantage of the space behind the church, known

as “The Backyard,” which features a playground, plenty of room for activities and café string lights for ambiance.

Although the event is a carnival, there will not be any rides. Instead, the event will focus on carnival-style games, including a fishbowl game, a Ping-Pong cup game, a bean bag toss and more. A highlight of the event will be a dunk tank, where Hammer has been “voluntold” to be ready to get wet.

“We’re very excited to have our pastor in the dunk tank,” said Amanda Hookway, event chair. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.”

Bingo will also be available for people of all ages to play, and prizes will be awarded for both the carnival games and bingo.

People will have the option of two types of wristbands for the event - one that includes the games and one for bingo.

JP Welliver, whom organizers describe as a “local celebrity” known for his charisma and his appearance on “Wheel of Fortune,” will be the caller for bingo.

“He’s very entertaining.

He’s a fan favorite,” Hammer said. “You can come and play bingo to your heart’s content. Everyone is welcome.”

There will also be some games available to play for free, including oversized yard games.

“I’m envisioning the prizes for the carnival games to be sort of ‘Chuck E. Cheese’ style,” Hookway said. “People can win tickets and then buy prizes with them at a prize table.”

Bingo prizes have been donated by community and church members and will include gift cards.

Proceeds from the carnival will benefit students in both the Manheim Central and Eastern Lebanon County school districts to help fund meals for students in need.

“Both churches have really great feeding ministries,” Hammer said. “St. Luke’s has a ministry where they offer a noontime lunch on Thursday and a Sunday evening meal, and it’s all free for the community. Penryn has a community food pantry.

We thought it would be nice to support a need in our community that goes along with this food ministry.”

Both churches have also collected back-to-school supplies to fill backpacks, and people who come to the carnival will be able to pick up what they need while supplies last.

“If you’re looking for something really fun for your family that’s low-cost and offers a little bit of something for everyone, this is it,” Hookway said. “It’s going to be a fun way to wrap up your summer before you launch back into the school year.”

St. Paul regularly hosts community events in its Backyard space, including First Friday Fire Pit gatherings, which will be held on Sept. 4 and Oct. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. These low-key evenings are open to anyone and include casual conversations in a relaxed atmosphere.

T he raindate for the Penryn carnival will be Saturday, Aug. 29. The event is pet-friendly, and people are welcome to bring their dog.

In April, 23 members of the Tower and Street Clock C hapter, NAWCC staff members and local NAWCC volunteers helped during “Quincy Week” to apply goldleaf to the decorative elements of the clock.

“On Saturday of that same week, the clock was erected in the new Quincy extension of the Public Time gallery,” Bugh said. “For the first time in over 12 years, Quincy was standing tall again - and this time in its own dedicated space within the NAWCC Museum.”

On July 25, a formal dedication of Quincy took place at the museum, with about 120 people in attendance.

earned his Ph.D. in anthropology from Temple University, where he wrote his dissertation on the Battle of Paoli, which took place in Malver n. T he focus of his research centers on the interpretation of memor y and mnemonic landscapes associated with the American Revolution.

In addition to studying the Paoli Battlefield, Kalos worked for the National Park Ser vice at Valle y Forge National Historical Park for six years, where he led public archaeology programs. Recently, he co-edited the volume “The Archaeology of the American Revolution.”
