Scorching hot temperatures gave Columbia High School (CHS) students a run for their money at band camp as they tirelessly rehearsed for the new fall show, “Under the Sea.” Band camp took place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from July 29 to Aug. 2 at the school and concluded with a preview show for the public on the evening of Aug. 2. Marching band director Daniel Stauffer said that he and other band staff members begin brainstorming ideas for the coming year’s show in January before settling on a theme that they believe they can portray well on the football field. “Under the Sea,” which Stauffer described as a darker show featuring sirens and
Eastern York Recreation Authority
mermaids, will include the songs “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette, “La Mer” by Claude Debussy, and 2WEI’s arrangement of “Toxic” by Britney Spears, as well as an original composition by Columbia’s own Demetrius Archer, who instructs the band’s woodwinds section. Aside from performing the show during halftime at CHS football games, the band will participate in a total of six competitions for the Cavalcade of Bands. Last year, CHS placed second overall in the Independence Conference out of 16 school marching bands from the Mid-Atlantic Region. In addition, Stauffer was named 2018 Marching Band Director of the Year at the Cavalcade of Bands. See Marching Band pg 5
Columbia High School color guard captain Morgan Williams (left), brass section leader Juliana Anderson (center) and woodwinds section leader Stephanie Kuhns are looking forward to another successful season for the marching band, as the students will participate in six Cavalcade of Bands competitions.

Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund (right) got to meet Miss Lieu (left) during a May trip to Vietnam with Brittany’s Hope. Fredlund and her company helped to raise nearly $15,000 to build homes for families in need in Vietnam through Brittany’s Hope, including one for Miss Lieu and her children.
As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the payit-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. T h r o u g h p a y - i t - fo r w a r d , L i f e Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, however, would be new for the company.
