Four Days of Fun Await at Carnival

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and rules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country.

The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial

Celebrate the end of summer at the Eastern York Recreation Authority Carnival. The event will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 19, through Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Hellam Men’s Baseball Field, 20 Franklin St. The hours on Wednesday and Thursday will be 6 to 9 p.m., and the carnival will run from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The community is invited to come out and enjoy a dozen rides, games, food vendors, booths from community groups and more. A car show will be held on Friday, and fireworks will take place on Saturday.

Each evening will also offer live entertainment. On Wednesday, various church groups will perform. On Thursday, Corina Rose will entertain. Friday’s band will be the Misfit Boys, and Hot Rod Mule will wrap up the entertainment on Saturday.

This year will mark the first time the Eastern York Recreation Authority is running the carnival, which was launched by Hellam Area Recreation 22 years ago, said Jessica Cirilo, director of Eastern York Recreation Authority.

“In 2018, the Eastern York Recreation Authority took over the Hellam Area Recreation’s existing sports programs, and last year they asked us if we would be willing to take the carnival over as they dissolved,” Cirilo explained. “We are lucky enough to have experienced volunteers from the former Hellam Rec board assisting in this transition.”

While the recreation authority plans to make some changes to the carnival, that won’t happen this year, she noted, explaining

Driving 4 Drama Will Support Theater Program

t’s fitting that a car show to benefit Columbia High School’s theater department is open to any type of vehicle, because the entries in the past have been a bit dramatic.

“Someone brought a hang glider once,” said David Kinser, who helps to organize the show. “One year, a guy brought an antique camper. You can bring your lawnmower, bring your bicycle. If it’s got wheels, you can bring it.”

The show, called “Driving 4

Drama,” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta.

A rain date is set for the same time on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19.

Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago.

“Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.”

“The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said.

“It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.”

That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship.

Janson Field, a traditional baseball diamond built atop the borough’s former reser voir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging per-

centage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throu g hout the 1920s and 1930s.

T he Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field.

Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available.

People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s.

The Giant Company Forms Partnership With Penn State Penn State Athletics and the Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, have announced a new multi-year partnership, naming Giant the Official Grocery Partner of Penn State Athletics with category exclusivity. YCAS Plans Astronomy Program

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public solar and radio astronomy event at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Aug. 15, from noon to 3 p.m.

Society member Kerry Smith will present the radio astronomy portion of the event and g ive attendees a peek into the future of the society ’s

“My dad, my older brother, really my whole family has been involved in Columbia’s theater department,” said Shane Kinser, one of the show organizers.

“And all of us here being involved in cars, it was a way to combine two things we’ve always been passionate about.”

The show started small at Glatfelter Field but soon outgrew that space and moved to the high school campus. Then, it got too big for that site and moved to the church g r o u n d s l a s t y e a r. I n the past, the show has at t rac te d hu nd re d s o f cars.

A big appeal is the wide variety of trophies entrants can take home, including a 72-inch Best of Show trophy, awarded by the organizers. T he organizers also choose Best Paint, Best Interior and Best Engine.

Manufacturers’ Association Announces Expansion T h e M a n u fac t u re r s ’ Association has announced an investment by BAE Systems to help expand the organization’s Automation Training Center, a new 5,000-square-foot stateof-the-art training facility dedicated to automation, robotics, and mechatronics training in support of the defense industrial base and regional manufacturing sector.

The newly named BAE Systems Automation Training Center is an expansion of the Manufacturers’

A ssociation’s existing 20,000-square-foot training center and was made possible in part through the support of BAE Systems, which helped underwrite the development of the facility. The center will provide hands-on training and apprenticeship opportunities designed to upskill workers in the high-demand fields of automation, robotics, and mechatronics.

The BAE Systems Automation Training Center will be a key component

of T IDE , the Technology Innovation Defense Ecosystem, a central Pennsylvania initiative of the region’s defense manufacturing community, designated by the Department of War. TIDE was also awarded a $6.1 million grant in 2023 through the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to train and upskill the defense manufacturing workforce across the region.

“This money helps them reach a lot further than they would be able to otherwise,” said Tim Pentz, one of the car show organizers, who added that it costs thousands of dollars to attend the conference.

“This gives the kids a lot more opportunities.”

Additional organizers of the show are Travis Kinser and James Weaver. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or pop-up tents to set up on the grassy areas of the church grounds and then spend a few hours enjoying the cars and supporting the theater department.

“Bring your car, your truck, your motorcycle, or just come out and see what’s there,” Shane said.

“Everyone is welcome.”

Auction items include gift cards and gift baskets donated by local businesses and individuals. A lemonade stand will be set up on-site, and food trucks will include Tank’s Taters, Halo’s Eater y and Kona Ice. A DJ will provide music during the event.

All money raised benefits the theater department. “ We g i ve b e t w e e n $4,000 and $8,000 each year, so we ’ve donated more than $25,000 to this program,” David said.
