A Place To Call Home

The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible.

After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared.

Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down.

Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223-225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building,

formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed.

The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home.

They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet.

This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to state-of-the-art.

Garden Open House Planned An open house will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the gardens at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. The gardens and the open house are a project of the York County Penn State Extension Master Gardeners and the York County Juvenile Probation, in conjunction with the York County Parks and Recreation Department. The event will be held rain or shine. Free refreshments will be served.

Griffin To Speak At National Night Out

The Columbia Borough Police Department will host its seventh annual National Night Out (NNO) event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Glatfelter Field, 1249 Lancaster Ave., Columbia. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Free activities will be offered throughout the evening, including pony rides, vehicle displays, and an assortment of live animals to visit with from Creatures Great & Small in Thomasville. A partially inflated hot air balloon will be set up for children to explore and play inside. Numerous businesses and organizations from the community will also have booths with information, activities, and giveaways.

Fall Softball Registration Opens Registration for Eastern York Recreation Authority’s fall softball teams is now open.

Programs are available for 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 18 and under, as determined by the player’s age as of Jan. 1. Games and practices will be held in Hellam and Lower Windsor townships.

A fee has been set for residents of Hallam Borough and Hellam and Lower Windsor townships, with a higher fee for

Jennifer Eaton, manager of youth services with VisionCorps of Lancaster, laid out the rules early for the campers who took part in Camp Cool from June 17 to 21. The campers, each of whom has a vision impairment, were told that they were not allowed to come to Eaton and say, “I can’t (do something).” “They could say, ‘I need help’ or ‘I’m scared to do this,’” said Eaton.

The idea behind the banned phrase was to encourage the 8- to 12-year-old students from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties to creatively utilize the expanded core curriculum that camp leaders had set out for the week. “(The curriculum is) a set of tools that children with vision loss need to have in order to lead successful, independent lives,” explained Eaton, who added that the curriculum focuses on several areas: social interaction; transportation; orientation and mobility; recreation; assistive technology; independent living skills; career education; compensatory skills, which comprise reading and writing in different communication modes such as braille and large print; visual efficiency skills; and self-advocacy, such as asking for assistance when needed. All of the activities the campers participated in helped them to develop in these areas.

On June 17, the campers journeyed to Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which is in Reinholds and is overseen by Laura Rutledge. “(Horseback riding is) a great recreational activity for children with vision loss (because of) the sensory input, the connection with the animal, and the sense of independence they get from riding,” said Eaton.

“The (campers) think they are here just to play with the horse, but it’s so much more

than that.”

Camp Cool also included a kayaking trip to Indiantown Gap, where the group worked with Team River Runner in a program that was designed for veterans.

Camp leaders began working to bolster social confidence with ice breaker games on the first day of camp. “We will work on socialization all week,” said Eaton, who noted that a train ride to Harrisburg was on the agenda to promote use of public transportation. “We will visit the State Museum, tour the Capitol, and ride the riverboat cruise, and … they will experience what it’s like to call for an Uber.” Eaton noted that vision-impaired campers can utilize a smartphone using VoiceOver.

The campers also shopped for groceries. “(Campers received) a list of what they need to purchase, and they needed to locate the items within the store,” said Eaton, explaining that they planned to use Aira, a new technology available in certain public locations. “(Campers) can call in and get a live person who uses the camera on the phone to guide them through the grocery store,” explained Eaton, who added that campers would be encouraged to learn the basic layout and locations of types of food in grocery stores and to not shy away from asking clerks for help.

During lunch at Wegman’s, campers were required to ask for large print and braille menus at the café. Eaton noted that money management would be tested. “Each (camper) will have cash and have to know what denomination they are handing the clerk,” she said, noting that there are apps available to help those with very limited vision.

Working to develop cooking skills was part of the plan as well. “(Campers) will

Workshop from pg 1 Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, will present “Intro to Water Bath Canning: Tomato Sauce” on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Attendees will learn the basics of water bath canning in this hands-on workshop, which is one of three different introductory canning workshops offered this season.

During these make-and-take sessions, participants will learn how to safely preserve various foods through tested methods of safe water bath canning. On Aug. 8, participants will make tomato sauce during the workshop, and each person will leave with a half-pint of tomato sauce.

Participants will spend time standing, so they should wear comfortable shoes.

Closed-toe shoes are preferred. The group will work with hot ingredients, boiling water, and hot end products, so people should wear appropriate clothing to guard against possible splashes and spills. They may also bring an apron to wear if they would like. Anyone who has long hair is asked to wear it tied back or covered.

Although not required, participants may bring gloves to wear. All other materials

Volunteers are still needed for the Camp Security archaeological dig.

Exploration, guided by lead archaeologist John Crawmer, will begin on Thursday. Aug. 8, with surface collection followed by metal detection on Friday, Aug. 9. Hand excavation will begin on Monday, Aug. 12, and continue on Mondays through Fridays, except for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. After hand excavation concludes on Wednesday, Sept. 4, several days will be allowed for rain makeup. Lab work - cleaning and cataloging of found artifacts - will be conducted from Thursday, Sept. 12, until Friday, Sept. 20, as necessary.

Columbia Life Network donated 63 new 10-year Kidde lithium-battery smoke detectors to the Columbia Borough Fire Department (CBFD) on July 3. The donation came after Fire Chief Doug Kemmerly spoke at a recent Columbia Borough Council meeting.

Kemmerly stated that, upon homeowner request, CBFD installs up to four

challenges.

The fruit and vegetable gardens with their many varieties yield more than 6,000 pounds of produce, which is donated to local food banks each year. Fruit growers will be able to see the varieties of pears and blackberries

ripening now, as well as vegetables. A variety of tomatoes will be available to sample, and attendees may purchase fresh-picked produce.

The event will also include exhibits on pollinators, growing garlic, invasive plants, rain barrels, the Audubon Society and

topics such as “Keep York Beautiful” and “Pests Bothering People, Pets and Property.” Talks and demonstrations by Master Gardeners will include “Composting” by Jack Geoghan at 9:15 a.m., “Growing Tomatoes”

In striving to provide nutritious food to neighbors in need, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program that directly supports low-income communities. Since these products have a short shelf life, the Food Bank collaborates with partner agencies to distribute more than 10 million pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors directly to neighbors in need.

This year-round program provides nutritious foods to more than 14,000 individuals at 99 distribution sites in 21 counties. Depending on the harvest season, volunteers distribute a variety of perishable items such as potatoes, onions, lettuce, apples, strawberries and yogurt. Last year, nearly 10.2 million pounds of produce and 2.2 million servings of fresh milk were distributed.

The Fresh Express Program follows income guidelines to determine eligibility.

There are currently five distribution sites at different times of the month in Lancaster County, and preregistration is required.

Distributions will take place as follows: fourth Friday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia (717-684-1497); second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster (717687-9594); Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Jean Polite Food Bank at

Students Seek Host Families ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE), in cooperation with community high schools around the USA, is looking for local families to host boys and girls, ages 15 to 18, from a variety of countries, including Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, and others. ASSE students come to practice their English and

experience American culture, such as food, sports, shopping, etc.

The students also love to share their own culture and language with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a rich

cultural experience.

In addition, ASSE students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident, and liability insurance.

ASSE students are academically selected into the program, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries, and personal

interests.

community that would like to participate at 6:15 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., a demonstration by the Lancaster County Prison K-9 Unit will take place on the field behind the pavilion and first responders will compete in a kickball game on the baseball field. A car extraction demonstration is set to take place from 8 to 8:45 p.m. in the parking lot near the pavilion.

The Kracker Beez will perform music on the main stage from 6 to 7 p.m. and from approximately 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The grand finale for the evening will be a fireworks display, set to begin at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Attendees who bring donations of new school supplies will receive tickets to use in the annual Jail and Bail collection drive.

Local celebrities, including principals and teachers from schools in Columbia, will be locked up in simulated jail cells at the center of Glatfelter’s football field. Folks may submit the tickets they receive for bringing donations to help the celebrity of their choice earn enough votes to be released. The school supplies will later be distributed to students in need at all of the schools in Columbia Borough.

New for this year, Columbia Borough Police officers will have a vehicle set up to collect nonperishable food items from attendees. The police have set a goal of filling a car with items to then donate to the Columbia Food Bank.

At 7 p.m., T.J. Griffin, a former recording artist manager who worked with industry greats including film director Zack Snyder, rapper Ice-T, and the band Queen, will speak. He was asked to speak on the TEDx Talk platform, where he presented his talk, “The Paper Plane Effect,” about the effect that environments have on the belief systems of youths. Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications.

Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced

A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.”

When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.”

A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill.

Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street.

Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live.

The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there for more than 15 years. It is their home, and Mable relayed that many say that it now feels like they have a new home. The residents say they truly feel that someone thought them worthy of living in a cheery, permanent home.

Board members are hopeful that
