Driving 4 Drama Will Support Theater Program

t’s fitting that a car show to benefit Columbia High School’s theater department is open to any type of vehicle, because the entries in the past

have been a bit dramatic.

“Someone brought a hang glider once,” said David Kinser, who helps to organize the show. “One year, a guy brought an antique camper. You can bring your lawnmower, bring your bicycle. If it’s

got wheels, you can bring it.”

T he humble pawpaw will take the spotlight on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Horn Farm hosts its annual Pawpaw Festival. The festival is the main event of the Wild & Uncommon Weekend, which will run from Thursday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 20. Tickets are on sale now for the festival and the weekend’s events. “ The Pawpaw Festival is a one-day celebration of North America’s largest edible tree fruit, the pawpaw, alongside other native and uncommon foods of the season,” explained Andrew Leahy, education and outreach specialist for the Horn Farm Center. “Visitors to the Pawpaw Festival can expect to find fresh fruit, trees and unique pawpaw products for sale.”

The Pawpaw Festival will take place at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York.

The event will feature plenty of pawpaws plus educational talks; children’s activities; tours of the Horn Farm’s regenerative farm and pawpaw orchard; and more than 40 vendors offering local food, crafts and plants.

“Visitors to the 2026 Pawpaw Festival can expect to find a bigger lineup of educational programs and live music,” Leahy commented. “This is also our second year collaborating with Collusion Tap Works to offer pawpaw beer on tap at the event.”

The Pawpaw Festival is the signature event of the Wild & Uncommon Weekend, which launched in 2024.

CAP Members Attend Training Programs Members of the L ancaster Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the C iv il A ir Patrol (C A P) recently spent a week at the Pennsylvania Wing’s Cadet Training Schools, either continuing their cadet development through hands-on learning and leadership training or by serving on staff.

The program concluded with a formal graduation ceremony on June 28.

The Pennsylvania Wing of CAP holds an annual weeklong summer encampment at Fort Indiantown Gap. It includes B asic Encampment, a Leadership Development Course, a STEM Academy, and the Color Guard Academy.

This year’s Basic Encampment program included dr ill training , war r ior knowledge, sports, relay races, physical training, obstacle courses, and aerospace activities. During this process, the cadets learned how to work in a team, built camaraderie, gained independence, and made memories.

STEM Academy cadets built solar-powered robots, soldered electronic kits, and explored digital forensics. They also participated in trips, including a tour of the Penn State Breazeale Reactor, a trip to Bloomsburg to learn about aerospace engineering, and a visit to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.

Course experienced public speaking, leadership reaction challenges, rappelling from a 200-foot tower, leading drill, learning about different leadership styles, and flying in a UH-60 Black Hawk. The Color Guard Academy cadets not only trained on flag opening ceremonies, but they also took part in the Battle of the Bulge wreath-laying event and presented the colors at a Stormers baseball game.

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron cadets who completed Basic Encampment are Cadet Senior Airmen Luca Hermosillo and Noah Her mosillo, both of Wrightsville; Cadet Airman 1st Class Kaiden Painter of Leola; and Cadet Senior Airman Theodore Seifferlein of Landisville.

Cadet Staff Sgt. Gabriel Catherman of Windsor attended the STEM Academy, where he participated in advanced science and technology activities.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitor ing Initi ative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.

PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster

County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors.

Areas in L ancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg , Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierra clubevent@gmail.com and

low marks for short-term par ticle pollution. T he aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.

Ephrata Cloiser Plans Ice Cream Social

Aug. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hellam Township Municipal Building, 35 Walnut Springs Road, York. It will feature fun for people of all ages.

“This year, we have a bounce house obstacle course as well as an inflatable ax-throwing game,” Williams said. “We will have food trucks and lots of vendors and community groups with tables of information and activities for kids to do. The fire department and other first responders will be here with their equipment for kids to explore as well.”

Food trucks will include Traveller Coffee Co., Tank’s Taters and Bayou Snow.

Along with representatives and equipment from the police, fire and sheriff’s departments, The South Central PA Search and Rescue - Search 93 trailer will be on-site.

“We usually have officers there who hang out and walk around to meet people,” Williams said. “We set up a rock wall, and we’ve had officers get in there and climb up the wall with people.”

Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 to promote police and community partnerships. The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event.

Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.

Hellam Township began holding National Night Out about 15 years ago, and the event grows every year.

The event relies on support from the community organizations and sponsors. “ We h av e s o m a n y wonderful sponsors for National Night Out from our community, and I’d just like to highlight their importance in making this event such a success,” said Sarah Smith, assistant to the township manager.

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its annual ice cream social.

This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Tom Reinhold, journalist and novelist Larry Alexander, state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream.

A highlight of the event will be nature crafts and games under the tent in the meadow. Prizes will be awarded for the first 50 children who complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt.

Children can make their own wooden necklaces and explore the nature trail along the Cocalico Creek. Attendees can learn more about the Historic Landscape Restoration Initiative that will transform

That’s one of the reasons the township hosts National Night Out, Williams said. “ We g e t d o n a t i o n s t h ro u g h o u t t h e y e a r for events from people throughout our townships and boroughs, and this event is a way to give back to them,” she explained.

“It’s a night of fun, getting to know our first responders on a personal level.

Sometimes with the police department especially, people get nervous around police. This is an opportunity to come out, talk to them and learn more about what they do.”

Last year was the first National Night Out Smith attended, and the event made a positive impression.

“Come out and try it and see what’s it all about,” she said. “I didn’t know what was going on in my own community until I started working for the township.

This event showed me that our first responders are just people, too. They are people who want to help their community. They want to protect and serve.”

Williams added that National Night Out offers something for everyone.

“It’s a great night for families to come out, have some fun, get some food, learn not only about the police department and what they do to protect and serve our community, but also the businesses and organizations in our community,” she said. “It’s a cool way to learn about where you live and the people whose work keeps the community running and thriving.”

Visitors will also be able to play Colonial games and try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.

Event attendees may also learn more about charity in Ephrata and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.

The museum store will feature 18th- centur y reproduction toys, crafts, and souvenirs; books of

historical interest; and local handmade arts and crafts.

Visitors may also purchase cards, candles, potter y, sleigh bells, and chocolate in the store.

Lung cancer has been the long-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and most lung cancer diagnoses are made

at the advanced stage of the disease. By providing individuals at high risk with screening that uses low-dose computed tomography, lung cancer can be found early when it is more treatable and potentially curable.

Patti Barber, an endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will present “Osprey: Pennsylvania’s Less Appreciated Recovery Success.” Ospreys are an incredible success story but are often overshadowed by the recovery of bald eagles and peregrine falcons. Barber will cover

the history of the osprey population in Pennsylvania and reasons for its decline and recovery.

She will describe current monitoring efforts, successes, challenges, and failures, as well as the current population and distribution in the state.

B arber has studied b i rd s o n fo u r co n t i nents. She did her master’s research on mate guarding and paternity in red-faced warblers.

With the Pennsylvania Game Commission, she is responsible for the 20 threatened and endangered native birds of the state.

T he Pawpaw Festival originated in 2004 and was created by Dick and Judy B ono, lo cal fo o d enthusiasts and longtime supporters of the Horn Farm.

“Shor tly after establishing a pawpaw orchard here in 2012, the Bonos relocated the festival to the farm, where it has since evolved into one of the Horn Farm’s most popular annual events,” Leahy said.

Zalit Begins Term as Rotary District Governor

The Rotar y Clubs of South Central Pennsylvania have welcomed Rebecca Zalit from the Rotary Club of Palmyra as the 2026-27 district governor of Rotary District 7390.

The leadership transition took place during the district’s annual installation ceremony, where Zalit officially succeeded Mary Brunski of Carlisle as district governor for the new Rotary year, which began July 1. This year’s celebration was held at Palmyra Bowling and the Sinkhole Saloon & Grille. Aaron Jacobs of York and Elizabeth Wolfe of York were also installed in their roles as incoming district governors for the years 2027-28 and 2028-29.

As district governor, Zalit will ser ve nearly 1,700 Rotary Club members in 39 clubs across Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, L ancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York

counties. Throughout the coming year, she will work alongside club leaders to strengthen membership, develop community partnerships, support youth l e ad e r s h i p p ro g ra m s , advance the Rotary Foundation, and expand service projects both locally and around the world.

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million people who unite to take action through service. District 7390 clubs collectively contribute thousands of volunteer hours each year while addressing needs close to home and around the world. Rock Ford Posts Programs

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will welcome Tony Shahan of Flavors of History on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. for a lecture on “Craft, Clues, and Cooking: Re-creating the Trimble Kitchen.”

The program will be held in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the barn. The admission fee is for the lecture only.

The program will share the research and archaeo l o g y t h a t u n c o v e re d historical evidence in a 1739 kitchen at Newlin Grist Mill in Glen Mills.

Attendees will learn how the space was restored as an experimental kitchen, and they will find out about some of the tradespeople a n d c ra f t s p e o p l e w h o reconstructed furnishings to make the kitchen functional. The program is a study of a kitchen from the architectural, archaeo-

logical, documentary, and cook’s perspectives.

Shahan has more than 38 years in the museum field. He has a passion for historic food and beverage, and he offers historic drink classes and curated tastings. In addition, he has restored and reconstructed mills, water systems, and kitchens. He combines his love of historic trades with experimental archaeology and has led projects in brick making, manufacturing potash, and rebuilding a water wheel using only 18th-centur y tools and techniques. He is experienced with hearth cooking, wood-fired bake ovens, brewing, and distilling.

He has worked in an 1806 brewery, a reconstructed 1850 brewery, and George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill at Mount Vernon.

Bicycle Club Plans Rides The Lancaster Bicycle Club will hold two rides through scenic roads in Au g u s t . T he c l u b w i l l host its annual Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the Covered Bridge Classic on Sunday, Aug. 16.

The Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride - voted Best Ride in the State of Pennsylvania - will offer two scenic route options designed for riders who enjoy quiet backroads, rolling farmland, and local ice cream favorites. Riders participating in a 40-mile route will depart from Calvary Church, 1051 L andis Valley Road, Lancaster,

at 8:15 a.m., with stops at Bird-in-Hand Bakery, L app Valley Farm, and Oregon Dairy. Those taking part in a 28-mile route will depart from the church at 8:30 a.m., visiting Bird-inHand Bakery, Hayloft Ice Cream, and Oregon Dairy.

Riders can expect peaceful roads, farmland views, and the chance to enjoy some of Lancaster County’s most beloved ice cream dest inat ions . Weather permitting, the ride offers a relaxed, family-friendly morning filled with scenery and local flavor.

This is the seventh year for the show, which began as a way to support two subjects that are important to the Kinser family and other employees of South 16th Street Garage in Columbia.

“My dad, my older brother, really my whole family has been involved i n C o l u m b i a ’s t h e a t e r department,” said Shane Kinser, one of the show organizers. “And all of us here being involved in cars, it was a way to combine two things we’ve always been passionate about.”

The show started small at Glatfelter Field but soon outgrew that space and moved to the high school campus. Then, it got too big for that site and moved to the church g r o u n d s l a s t y e a r. I n the past, the show has attrac te d h u ndre d s o f cars.

A big appeal is the wide variety of trophies entrants can take home, including a 72-inch Best of Show trophy, awarded by the organizers. T he organizers also choose Best Paint, Best Interior and Best Engine.

The rest of the awards are determined by businesses who sponsor them or given out by Columbia theater kids. A Director’s Tro p hy i s aw a rd e d b y Janet Wood, the theater department head. “ We h a v e w e l l o v e r 30 sponsored trophies,” Shane said. “Everybody is welcome to this show, and anybody can get a trophy.”

Theater kids will run a concession stand on-site at the event, and funds will also be raised through both a silent auction and a 50/50 giveaway. Auction

items include gift cards and gift baskets donated by local businesses and individuals. A lemonade stand will be set up on-site, and food trucks will include Tank’s Taters, Halo’s Eater y and Kona Ice. A DJ will provide music during the event.

All money raised benefits the theater department. “ We g i ve b e t w e e n $4,000 and $8,000 each year, so we ’ve donated more than $25,000 to this program,” David said.

Funds support the fall play and spring musical put on by the middle school and high school, and money also goes to the costs of students attending the state International Thespian Conference.

“This money helps them reach a lot further than they would be able to otherwise,” said Tim Pentz, one of the car show organizers, who added that it costs thousands of dollars to attend the conference.

“This gives the kids a lot more opportunities.”

Additional organizers of the show are Travis Kinser and James Weaver. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or pop-up tents to set up on the grassy areas of the church grounds and then spend a few hours enjoying the cars and supporting the theater department.

“Bring your car, your truck, your motorcycle, or just come out and see what’s there,” Shane said.

“Everyone is welcome.”
