Columbia Summer Bucket List Offers Fun Activities For All

The 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List provides suggestions of more than 35 activities highlighting various Columbia organizations, businesses, and landmarks, such as Wright’s Ferry Mansion (left photo) and the Columbia Market House (right photo).

Susquehanna National Heritage Area in partnership with the Borough of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Committee has launched a 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List. The list provides residents and visitors with suggestions of more than 35 activities featuring Columbia organizations, businesses and landmarks. The Columbia Summer Bucket List focuses on free and low-cost activities that are readily available and safe during the pandemic. Participants may discover new parts of town, view murals, and engage in silly activities. For example, the list encourages people to make a train noise at the Columbia & Reading Railroad Car at Manor and Fourth streets. Participants may also dive into Columbia’s history by visiting historic sites and markers like the Lincoln Highway marker on Chestnut Street and Zion Hill Cemetery. See Summer Bucket List pg 3

UDS Service Dogs Program Plans First Golf Outing Working To Grant Wishes

UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were matched with clients in June and have begun team training in preparation for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual disabilities. The organization will host its first golf outing on Aug. 28 at Meadia Heights Golf Club to raise funds to support the program.

Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and See UDS Service Dogs pg 4

Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash

In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish

needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the MakeA-Wish mission, especially during these challenging See Make-A-Wish pg 2
