When Lisa Palmquist joined Pilot International almost 20 years ago, she soon had a big goal in mind.

“My desire to be president of the organization began early in my Pilot career,” she shared. “I had such respect and admiration for the presidents that I said to myself, ‘I’m going to be her one day,’ whenever one of the presidents was addressing the membership at the annual convention.”

That dream will become a reality for Lisa when she begins a one-year term as president of Pilot International in July of 2026. She will be installed as president-elect of the organization in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, July 26.

Pilot International is an international organization founded in 1921 in Macon, Ga., to promote brain health and wellness and support caregivers. Lisa, who lives in Landisville, is a member of the local club, Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Columbia Fire Department.

She joined the Pilot Club of Lancaster in 2008 and then left in 2015 to charter the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania with 21 members.

“We just celebrated our 10th anniversary with 29 members,” she remarked.

As president of Pilot International, Lisa will serve as chief executive director.

“Responsibilities as president of Pilot International will be to preside at business sessions, report on the work and state

Lisa noted that her goal of heading the organization stemmed from the impact the nonprofit makes as well as the people she’s connected with through her service work.

“I have met some of the kindest, most service-oriented women from all over the world that I call my closest friends,” she said. “The most important reason for wanting to be president of Pilot International is believing in the mission of Pilot International - to influence positive change in communities throughout the world, by coming together in friendship and service, focusing on encouraging brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others.”

Award-Winning Publications

Our community papers (Merchandiser, Advertiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier) had a strong showing at the Best of the Best Association of Community Publishers (ACP) 2024 awards competition. ACP represents community publications from coast to coast, reaching millions of homes on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

A few of our 2024 awards include the following:

Locally, the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania organizes a variety of community initiatives, including providing more than 300 free helmets to children of Lancaster County just in the past year, 950 new children’s books to newborns discharged from the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and 120 Coping Kits to the UPMC Lititz emergency room for children undergoing the traumatic experience of an emergency.

“These are just a few of the projects that the club shares to serve our community,” Lisa said. “We support the Hershey Mill Home with monthly activities and the Alzheimer’s Walk. … Project Linus receives no-sew blankets from us. Pick-me-up gifts are given to many individuals and groups. For

example, an extra-large basket of goodies was presented to the West York Police Department and staff to show community care and support after the loss of one of their colleagues during a shooting.”

When she’s not serving through Pilot International, Lisa dedicates time to Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster and Salem Church in Manheim.

“I love spending time on my deck with my pool and flowers, and I love to travel,” she said. She and her husband, Scott, also enjoy spending time with their family, which includes four granddaughters, one grandson and two dogs.

Lisa encourages anyone with a heart for service to consider joining the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania.

“We are always looking for new members of all ages,” she said. “If you enjoy serving others and having fun, then Pilot is for you! Our club is diverse and very welcoming with the belief that you do what you can do. We have young mothers and older members.” For more information on the club, contact Lisa at 717-951-1432 or lpalm quist948@gmail.com.

Event To Benefit Beards for Brothers

Beards for Brothers (BFB), an organization that is committed to raising funds to support first responders and their family members who are fighting cancer, will present a Pint Night at Starview Brews, located at 224 Locust St., Columbia, on Friday, Aug. 1, at 5 p.m. A portion from every pint

sold will help fund BFB’s 2025 recipients. Guests are asked to park on the street or park on Locust Street at River Road (Route 441). Additionally, BFB is looking for recipients that it can assist during their battle with cancer. Participants may complete the online recipient form at www .beardsforbrothers.org to

nominate a first responder or their immediate family member. Those with questions may contact Rich Bowermaster at Bowermasterr @whtpd.org. For more information and details about fundraising events, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook.com/ BeardsforBrothers.

of America’s most storied rivers. It’s unlike any other lecture you’ve attended.”

Upcoming cruises will be held on Thursdays, Aug. 7 and 14, at 7 p.m. Cruises depart from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrighstville. Each cruise will last for one and a half hours.

“On Aug. 7, we’ll welcome Nelson Polite, president of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and a board member of both SNHA and LancasterHistory,” Vayansky said. “Nelson will share powerful stories about the Underground Railroad and the crucial role the Susquehanna River played as a pathway to freedom. His talk will highlight the resilience of those who sought liberty and the local communities that supported them.”

On Aug. 14, Allen Dieterich-Ward, author of “Cradle of Conservation: An Environmental History of Pennsylvania,” will be the featured speaker.

“(He) will explore how the natural environment - the ‘non-human world’has shaped Pennsylvania’s human history,” Vayansky explained. “He’ll help us see how nature is more than a backdrop to our story; it’s a driving force in it.”

The series is a natural fit for SNHA, Vayansky noted.

“Education is central to our mission at SNHA,” she said. “We’ve long offered public lectures on local history and heritage, and once we acquired the Chief Uncas, we saw a unique opportunity. What better place to share stories about the Susquehanna than while cruising on the river itself? These Heritage Cruises let us bring history to life, right on the water that shaped it.”

The cruises also serve as a fundraiser for SNHA.

A portion of ticket sales supports an honorarium for the speakers, with the remainder going directly toward maintaining the Chief Uncas and funding educational programming across the organization’s region.

While the history cruises will wrap up for the year in mid-August, the

Chief Uncas will continue to host tourgoers who want to explore the river in a unique setting.

“We offer one-hour guided tours every weekend during the season, plus longer and more intimate sunset cruises,” Vayansky said. “The Chief Uncas is also available for private charters - perfect for birthdays, reunions or just a relaxing time with friends.”

The season will conclude on Monday, Sept. 1.

The Chief Uncas was built in 1912 for Adolphus Busch, co-founder of the American beer company, to enjoy cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021 and transported the boat to Pennsylvania.

Donors for the project include Ann Barshinger of Lancaster and Doug Hoke and George and Bambi Long of York. Additional grant support was provided from the National Park Service and PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, Heritage Areas Program. Brookfield Renewable Energy also supported the boat project with a contribution. To learn more about the history of the Chief Uncas, visit http:// bit.ly/456bU36.

Vayanksy also encouraged people to check out a program offered at one of SNHA’s newest sites, the Mifflin Farm in Wrightsville.

“We invite everyone to join us for our Lectures on the Lawn series at the historic Mifflin Farm this summer - another opportunity to connect with local history in a beautiful, meaningful setting,” she said.

For the cruises aboard the Chief Uncas, space is limited to 20 guests per cruise. The boat is partially covered for weather protection, but visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather. The tours are suitable for people of most ages, but boarding requires navigating several steps.

For more information on the tours or the Lectures on the Lawn or to purchase tickets for a cruise, visit www.SusqNHA.org/ events.

Tennis Tourney Will Serve Up Opportunities for All

Tennis, everyone?

In addition to being a high-level, United State Tennis Association-sanctioned women’s tournament, the 18th Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge offers all a chance to be involved during its weeklong run from Monday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 10. Admission is free to the tournament, and there is no ticketing for members of the general public. The USTA Pro Circuit event, with both singles and doubles competitions, will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 1251 Stony Battery Road, Landisville. In addition to in-person viewing, matches will be livestreamed on the event’s website, https:// hempfieldrec.com/ landisville-pro-circuit/. The website also features information on the events surrounding the tournament and will include the brackets once the field has been finalized, said Wilson Pipkin, who is the Hempfield recCenter’s director of tennis and the event’s organizer.

The Koser Inspiring Women Luncheon presented by Turbo Execs will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering, 949 Church St., Landisville. There is a cost to attend, and people may register on the tournament website. From 11 to 11:30 a.m. there will be Meet, Mingle, and Mimosas. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will be able to attend the day’s matches in the box seat area. The event will pay tribute to women from the area who have inspired others. People can pay for a chance to win items donated by local businesses and the tournament community partners. All proceeds will benefit Milagro House in Lancaster. “We recognize women in the community who are doing exceptional things, and we will tell their stories,” Pipkin said.

High School Night will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6, featuring an Around the

World Challenge. Teams will rotate through the court, racing to hit a ball from each spot before the next team. The winning team will receive a pizza party during the 2025-26 tennis season.

Friday, Aug. 8, will be Kids Day. The event is free for kids age 12 and under. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., games will be held before tournament play begins. Email Catherine Shaak at shaak@ms.usta.com for more information.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Hempfield recCenter will host its first Wheelchair Tennis Clinic and Match Play event, which is open to wheelchair athletes of all ages and skill levels. The first 25 people who register will receive a gift bag. Check-in on the day of the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and lunch and match play will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a fee, which will include lunch. LASN Plans Meeting

Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Sleeve Alterations” by Debby Spence on Monday, July 28, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster.

The hourlong presentation will explore sustainability through the use of alterations to sleeves. Spence will discuss how to alter ill-fitting sleeves, including options for sleeves that are too long, too short, too narrow, or too wide.

Spence is a custom dressmaker and designer living in Lancaster. She has a Bachelor of Science

from the University of Delaware and is a member of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP), holding leadership positions in the Baltimore chapter. She was an ASDP/Threads Challenge finalist 11 times and has received eight awards, including three awards for “Best Overall.” She has also contributed several articles to Threads magazine.

There is a fee for nonmembers, which may be paid by cash or check. Guests may register on arrival.

community members to participate is by volunteering. The list of openings can be found on the tournament website and includes jobs like working a shift in the players’ lounge, running the scoreboard, being a court monitor or part of the ball crew, and serving as a VIP host. “Sponsors and volunteers are what keeps the tournament free,” said Pipkin, who encourages interested volunteers to sign up early. “The key is to keep the event free, so we can promote tennis and promote a healthy sport.”

The plan is working. Last year, Hempfield recCenter won an award from the

USTA for being the No. 1 facility in the country for adult programming, and it also features numerous programs for youths.

The Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge began in 2008 with a prize pool of $10,000, and that total has risen to $100,000, the maximum amount allowed for USTA circuit events. When Pipkin originally applied to host an event, the only opening on the schedule was in May. In 2013, there was a vacancy in the schedule in August, so Pipkin held two tournaments that year.

The August date is advantageous for many

reasons. Most significantly, the tournament takes place a couple weeks prior to the U.S. Open and is played on hardcourts just like the annual Grand Slam event in Queens, which is a train ride away from Landisville.

a few weeks later.

TROPHY WALL

TROPHY WALL

The surface and location help enable the Hempfield recCenter event to attract players ranked in the Top 100 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

Some of the most wellknown players to participate in the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge in the past did not win the event, including Jessica Pegula, who is currently ranked third in the world. In 2021, Emma Raducanu did not make the finals of the tournament but then went on an improbable run to capture the U.S. Open title

Pipkin said he will receive the full list of entries on Tuesday, July 22. There are typically between 400 and 500 applicants, with the highest-ranked players qualifying for the draw. One player is known. Pipkin is permitted to choose one wild card entrant. This year, he selected York native Elizabeth Ionescu. “It’s great to have a local player, and she’s one of the top junior players in the country,” Pipkin said. “It’s nice to give a local girl a chance to play on the bigger stage.”

“You don’t really know who’s the next big star,” said Pipkin. “You can see players here and then see them on the biggest stage in the world (at the U.S. Open). That is really cool.”

Hope Shines in “Bright Star”

When Susquehanna Stage presents “Bright Star,” audiences will discover a musical full of the ups and downs of human emotion.

“It’s a beautiful show,” said Lakisha Welch, who portrays Alice Murphy, the woman at the center of the story. “There’s an element of fate in this show. It’s a show about being true to yourself and trying to right the wrongs of the past in the best way you know how. It’s about characters looking for redemption.”

“Bright Star” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 25 and 26 and Aug. 1 and 2, as well as at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 27 and Aug. 3. It will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.

Written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the Tony Award-nominated show is loosely based on a true story. It’s set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and moves back and forth in time from the 1920s to the 1940s.

“The show is the journey of Alice,” Welch explained. “When she’s young, she falls in love with the mayor’s son. They have a child, but the mayor does not want that stigma for his son, and he says he’s going to take the baby and put it up for adoption.”

It turns out what happens to the baby is actually much darker, but the show is not just sad or depressing, said Daniel Graf, who portrays Alice’s love interest, Jimmy Ray Dobbs.

“It’s a show about grief and mourning and loss,” he said, “but it’s so much more as well.”

Lindy Keefe, who plays

Lucy Grant, a co-worker of Alice’s in the later timeline, agreed with Graf’s assessment.

“It’s a statement on grief and loss, but it’s also one of hope and reunion and connection,” she said. “I think it’s surprisingly fun as well. I’ve seen shows where you leave, and you just feel heavy, and I don’t think this is one of those shows. It balances those feelings and emotions really beautifully.”

The show’s title refers to the characters finding their way and discovering who they were meant to be, Keefe shared.

“Your bright star is the thing that guides you and what you do in life,” she stated. “Love perseveres in this show. There’s the love that Alice has as she reconnects with her romantic love, but there’s familial love as well, finding your family again or creating your chosen family.”

The storyline moves back and forth between Alice as a teenager and as a career woman who has risen to the top in the literary world.

For Welch, portraying the differences in her character has provided an opportunity to hone her acting skills.

“It is a challenge, because I am way older than 16,” she said with a laugh, referring to Alice in the 1920s. “I’ve been working on changing the tone, pitch and inflection of my voice as Alice ages, and there’s also the physicality of it. Alice is a young, wild and free-spirited young lady who becomes this ultra-sophisticated takecharge kind of woman.”

“Bright Star” features a cast of 20. Additional lead characters include Zach Haines as Billy Cane, a man with whom Alice shares a mysterious connection, and Jordyn John -

son as Margo Crawford, a childhood friend of Billy’s.

The score includes Americana music with bluegrass and country themes, providing the perfect backdrop to the story’s time and setting. The dance numbers also complement the plot, Keefe said.

“The dancing matches the sound and time period,” she said. “There’s swing and tap and folksy music. The dance numbers show fun, rhythmic movement in a way that really matches the tone of the show.”

Like Keefe, Jared Mattson portrays one of Alice’s co-workers in the 1940s scenes. His character, Daryl Ames, only knows the surface of Alice’s story at first but begins to learn more about her past as it’s revealed to him and Lucy.

He noted that playing the comic relief in a show full of heavy themes has been fun and a unique challenge to embrace.

“‘Bright Star’ is so fun because it’s simple characters, but it’s set in a story of epic proportions,” he remarked. “It’s easy to connect with the characters, but you leave the show going, ‘Whoa!’ with this rollercoaster of emotions.”

Audiences will also walk away connecting to at least

one character in the show, Graf said.

“Because there are different characters that go on different paths throughout the show, everyone who comes to see it will take something different away with them,” he said. “There are so many different character arcs in this show, and audiences get to see the development of every single character.”

LCA Announces New Organizational Structure

PLACE AN AD

epcclassifieds.com

Lancaster City Alliance (LCA) has announced a new organizational structure, which took effect on July 1. Changes to the overall team alignment are centered around the addition of two new roles, vice president of administration and relations and vice president of community and economic development. This change creates a new layer of leadership between the role of president, held by Marshall Snively, and the director roles.

Colleen Wagner has served the organization since 2007 and is stepping into the role of vice president of administration and relations. She will

oversee and lead employee relations, communications, volunteer engagement, and finance.

Jeremy Young will serve as the vice president of community and economic development and will oversee and lead the economic development department, the Downtown Investment District, and Clean & Safe initiatives. He started his career path with LCA as an intern with the James Street Improvement District and officially joined the LCA team in 2016.

The new roles for Wagner and Young were shared with partners and stakeholders at Lancaster City Alliance’s annual business meeting on June 26.

State Warns Residents of Fake Inheritance Scam

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), Pennsylvania Department of Aging, Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS), and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), along with the Office of Attorney General, warn Pennsylvanians to stay vigilant after a scam was reported involving someone posing as a commonwealth employee. The reported scam used a fake email resembling an official commonwealth email address to target older Pennsylvanians and request money through licensed financial institutions to receive a fake inheritance.

People who receive suspicious emails or texts or messages about earning money or an inheritance from a stranger should not respond or feel pressured to act quickly. People should also check email addresses, watch out for fake websites, and be

aware that Pennsylvania agencies will not threaten immediate action without proper notice.

Anyone who is contacted in a suspicious manner should not provide any personal or financial information or send money and should report the incident to PID or DoBS at 866-PAComplaint or www.pa.gov/consume.

Anyone who feels they have been scammed may file a complaint with the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection at www.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling 800-441-2555.

Governor Josh Shapiro has directed his administration and state agencies to use all available resources to protect Pennsylvanians and fight scams and fraud. State departments are working with law enforcement to track and stop these fraudulent activities. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to help spread the word to prevent others from becoming victims.

YAA Seeks Entries for Art Exhibition

York Art Association (YAA) has announced its call for art for the 54th annual Open Juried Exhibition, which will take place from Sunday, Nov. 2, to Sunday, Dec. 14. The show will be

held at YAA’s gallery, 220 S. Marshall St., York, and will feature up to 110 original works selected by juror Laura Turner Igoe, Ph.D., chief curator at the James A. Michener Art Museum.

The show is open to all fine artists and genres and welcomes a broad range of styles and approaches, with no set theme. It will offer artists an opportunity to share their work with a wider audience and be recognized for their

the top three bikes each will receive a cash prize.

This is the seventh annual car and bike show at the shelter. The idea fits perfectly with the shelter’s roots, Jalbert said.

“Harold and Judy McKonly founded the KleenRite Car Wash over 60 years ago,” she explained. “Judy had a passion for animals, and her lifelong dream was to build an animal shelter, so when she passed, their family created a foundation in their honor. It made perfect sense when we opened back in 2019 to have a car and bike show, and it felt like the perfect way to support their love for all things cars, bikes and animals in one event.”

Proceeds from the show will support operations at the shelter, including a lowcost wellness clinic, a lowcost spay/neuter clinic and low-cost dental services.

“It is one of our major fundraising events of the year and will always be one of my favorites,” Jalbert commented. “This ... event continues to grow every year, which is a testament to the great supporters in our community.”

There is a discount to register a vehicle prior to the event. People may register

creative achievement.

A total of $4,750 in prizes will be awarded, including a Best of Show prize of $1,750 and five Awards of Excellence of $600 each. The opening reception and the announcement of awards will be held on Nov. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The entry guidelines are available at https:// yaa2025.artcall.org/. The submission deadline for the show is Friday, Sept. 19, at noon.

Proceeds from the car show will support the cats up for adoption at Columbia Animal Shelter.

at http://bit.ly/3U4h4Gr or stop by the shelter. Same-day registration will also be available. There is no charge for spectators to attend the show.

Along with admiring the cars and bikes entered in the show, people may tour the shelter and visit with adoptable cats during the event.

“Enjoy a great time supporting a really great cause, see some awesome animals available for adoption, look at some amazing cars/ motorcycles that may just be older than you are and enjoy a day of family fun!” Jalbert said.

Artists will have their works displayed in York Art Association’s annual Open Juried Exhibition.
