Having Holistic Fun In The Great Outdoors Horn Farm To Host Children’s Programs The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education will kick off “Where the Wild Things Grow,” a youth summer program for children ages 6 to 12, on Thursday, July 18. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays through Aug. 8, offering students a chance for hands-on exploration on the grounds of the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, Hellam. Under the guidance of Jason Reed, director of sustainability and ecoliteracy at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, students will engage the environment from the farm’s wild edges to its cultivated gardens. Reed is a passionate contributor to the dialogue on ecological responsibility and people’s role in the world. He lives

on a five-acre homestead near Stewartstown, which he shares with heritage hogs and turkeys, goats, chickens, and a basement bug-growing operation. Reed is a founding member of the Filbert Street Community Garden in Baltimore, an Open Society Institute-recognized project. The garden is an urban food forest designed as a safe space for community members to educate and organize around their resources to create a safer, healthier home. With an emphasis on holistic fun, activities at “Where the Wild Things Grow” will include foraging for wild food, playing in the stream, tracking and observing wildlife, growing and harvesting sprouts and microgreens, and investigating the natural world. GEOCACHING CLASS

Susquehanna Heritage will host a geocaching class with Isaac’s Restaurant on Saturday, July 20, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Columbia Crossing, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The workshop will start at Columbia Crossing with an introduction to geocaching and how to use hand-held GPS units, followed by hunting for caches in Columbia River Park. Geocaches have been hidden in local parks and along trails by Isaac’s mascot Filbert. A limited number of GPS units will be available to use. As far as any of the members of the Blue Rock Support Group (BRSG) can recall, what was then the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 took over the organization of the Washington Boro Tomato

Festival in the late 1960s. “It’s so old, we can’t remember,” commented BRSG member Jim Pontz. When Goodwill merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the support group was See Tomato Festival pg 6

The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) will host a Victorian Tea on Saturday, July 20, at the mansion at 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. A high tea will be served at 4 p.m. on beautiful china in the ballroom. The menu will include peach and cottage cheese salad, gazpacho soup, cucumber tea sandwiches, pimento cheese tea sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, and scones with lemon curd, raspberry jam, and peach jam. A Victorian Tea will be served at the historic Haldeman Mansion in Bainbridge on July 20, with proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the building. Local historian James C. Landis will present on “The Haldemans Down Yonder: Professor Haldeman and His Kin at Chickies and Columbia.”
