Marking Memorial Day in Wrightsville

“Come together as a community to remember those that paid the ultimate price for us to be able to live in the greatest country on Earth,” said Joe Taney, home association president of American Legion Post 469, inviting the public to Memorial Day events in Wrightsville.

The post will host its 104th annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 27, beginning at 1 p.m. The parade will leave from the post, located at 101 S. Second St., Wrightsville, and will process west on Hellam Street to Fairview Cemetery, 600 Hellam St.

“The parade will include bands, local community groups and youth organizations,” Taney shared. “We are inviting veterans to participate in the parade. Participants are welcome to wear their dress uniform or field uniform of the era they served. There will be vehicles available for those veterans wishing to participate but unable to make the walk.”

The parade will also feature the Eastern York High School marching band, the Twin Rose Community Band, the Kracker Beez, the Susquehanna Valley Model A Restorers Club, Historic Wrightsville Inc. and many more groups, including local

fire departments and Girl Scout troops. Several local dignitaries, including state Rep. Joe D’Orsie, York County Commissioner Scott Burford and borough Mayor Tayne Slenker, will also participate.

A ceremony will be held immediately following the parade, and all are welcome to attend, Taney said. Guest speakers at the ceremony will include D’Orsie

as well as state Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill. Landon Mak will sing the national anthem, and James Hammel and Caitlyn Boyles will recite the Gettysburg Address. Wrightsville Legion scholarship winners will be recognized, and dignitaries will give short speeches. A rifle salute over the grave of Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Charles D. Marquette will also

occur, followed by the playing of taps by Milo Thomas.

Veterans who would like to participate in the parade do not need to preregister and may arrive at the American Legion post between noon and 12:30 p.m. on May 27. Groups or organizations that are interested in participating in the parade may contact Taney at joetaney@rocketmail.com.

Get some exercise on Saturday, June 8, and you can help veterans and raise money for cancer research at the same time. The Columbia Catholic War Veterans Post 1306 will host its annual PA Hero Walk, stepping off from the rail trail at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St. Same-day registration will begin at 7 a.m., with walkers departing at 8 a.m.

Although the event is called a “walk,” it’s open to runners and bike riders as well, said Mike Mastriania, post commander. “If we get bikers, they will (head out) a few minutes early,” he noted. “The route ends at the starting line at Columbia River Park.”

At the request of walkers last year, the committee made a few changes to this year’s event. “We are doing a 5-mile and a 14-mile walk,” Mike said. “The 5-mile will go to Marietta, to the 2.5-mile marker, where there will be a table, and then will return back to Columbia. The 14-mile walkers will go to the Donegal Riverfront Park and turn around and walk back

Golf event to benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Team Shad will host its 19th annual Score Fore a Cure Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 27, on the East Course at Briarwood Golf Course, 4775 W. Market St., York. Registration will be held from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m., with a captains’ meeting at 7:50 a.m. The four-person scramble format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams. The event will also include prizes for closest to the pin on par 3’s, pot of gold, a putting contest, and a hole in one contest.

The fee includes the green fee, use of a cart, coffee, doughnuts, lunch, and beverages. Alcohol may be purchased at the course.

All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). The organization works to fund research to find a cure and improve the lives of those with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease. CFF was recently ranked among the nation’s Top Ten “Best in the Business” in SmartMoney, the magazine of the Wall Street Journal.

Since 2004, Team Shad has contributed more than $500,000 to the CFF.

New this year, proceeds from the walk will be split between the PA Hero Walk Foundation and the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. “We have been doing this walk for several years, and all the proceeds went to veterans across the state, including York and Lancaster counties,” Mike explained. The PA Hero Walk is a group of veterans that walks from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh every June to raise awareness for veterans’ needs.

This year, the group decided to donate some of the funds to cancer research after both Mike and his wife, Karen, were diagnosed with cancer.

“All but one of my committee members have or had cancer, so it hit home for us,” Mike shared.

Following the walk, there will be social time at the Catholic War Veterans post, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia, with finger foods for walkers. A chicken barbecue will also be available for pickup, with orders due by Monday, June 3. Full dinners will be available for one price, with legquarter-only options for a separate price. Any extra meals will be available to purchase on June 8 after 1 p.m.

Vacation Bible school set

MOAA chapter plans riverboat cruise

All current and past uniformed services commissioned and warrant officers are invited to join Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) members for a two-hour cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat on Sunday, June 2. The Pride of the Susquehanna is one of only six authentic paddlewheel riverboats remaining in the U.S.

Tadpole Time will be available for kids ages 2 to 5 and their caregivers on Wednesday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. The program, focused on fireflies, will include a story and other activities. There is a fee for those who are not residents of Columbia.

SNHA has announced its 2024 River Ranger summer heritage and science program. Sessions will take place at Columbia Crossing on Thursdays, June 13 to Aug. 1, except July 4, and at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, on Tuesdays, June 18 to Aug. 6, except July 2. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s annual Fish for Free Days will be Sunday, May 26, and Thursday, July 4. On these days, residents and non-residents may legally fish without a fishing license. SNHA will allow visitors to borrow fishing poles and child-sized life jackets. The equipment must be used in Columbia River Park and returned by 5 p.m. the same day it is borrowed. SNHA encourages everyone, particularly kids, to wear life jackets when close to the water.

Clock museum extends exhibit

The National Watch & Clock Museum has extended its special exhibit “S-Town Exquisite Clocks” to run three more months due to continued public interest. Home to a large collection of clocks, watches, and horological artifacts, the National Watch & Clock Museum is exhibiting examples that showcase the talent of John B. McLemore, the focus of the acclaimed podcast “S-Town” from the makers of “Serial” and “This American Life.” The exhibit will be on display through Wednesday, July 31.

Since World War II, Columbia has hosted a Memorial Day parade. At one point, the small town featured the largest parade marking the holiday in the country, said parade organizers. While the scale of the parade may be reduced some, the spirit behind Memorial Day events in Columbia remains strong.

Columbia will kick off its Memorial Day events at noon on Sunday, May 26, with a performance from the Bainbridge Band in the gazebo in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St. At 1 p.m., a ceremony will begin.

The ceremony will feature community members and local dignitaries who will honor the holiday. “There will be a reading of the Gettysburg Address, remarks from Mayor Lutz, a main speaker … and a prayer by deacon Henry Reese,” said Bob Herman, one of the event organizers.

Manuel Acuna will be the speaker and the parade grand marshal. Born in Los Angeles, Acuna joined the Marines directly out of high school. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina before being called to service in Beirut, Lebanon. “I was there during the time of the bombing that took 243 Marines and Navy personnel,” he recalled. “Then I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for a year. I served in the Marines from 1981 to 1986.”

After living as a civilian for more than a decade, Acuna felt called to return to service after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. He joined the Army and served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. “During Operation Iraqi Freedom, we encountered an IED (improvised explosive device), which took the life of a comrade and friend,” he shared. “I was tasked to escort his remains home to the U.S. to his family.” Upon returning from combat, Acuna was stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey, where he trained service -

men and servicewomen in detainee operations.

After Fort Dix, he moved to Mount Joy, where he met his wife, Kimberly. His son, Christopher, and two grandchildren also live locally. Acuna retired from the Army in 2015 and volunteers with a variety of organizations, including the Catholic War Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He is also the CEO of the veteran-focused nonprofit organization Blankets of Honor.

At 2:30 p.m., the Memorial Day parade will step off from 10th and Manor streets. With a theme of “United We Stand,” the parade will include multiple divisions and will feature participants from a variety of service organizations in Columbia. The parade route will end at Sixth and Locust streets.

Herman encourages everyone to come out for the ceremony and parade. “Come support our long tradition of having and honoring Memorial Day,” he said.

DIY Marble Maze will be offered on Thursday, June 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. for children ages 6 to 10. Space is limited, and reservations are requested. Participants will use everyday supplies to create a maze and test it out.

Drawing for All will be offered on Thursdays, June 13, 20, and 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. for people age 10 and up, including adults. Artist Robert Oughton will share a variety of drawing techniques. Participants should bring something to draw on and something to draw with.

Little House at the Library will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on five Wednesdays beginning June 12; the other June dates are June 19 and 26.

This year marks 50 years since the pilot episode for “Little House on the Prairie” aired on NBC. During the library program, participants will read the book and celebrate this children’s literature classic with Jeremy Young of Historic Wrightsville Inc. The program is for children ages 9 to 11.

Activities for tweens ages 9 to 11 will be offered on Tuesdays, June 11 and 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Danger Club will meet on June 11, and Library Squad will gather on June 18. Project-based volunteering for youths ages 12 to

Wagman Heavy Civil receives two safety awards

Wagman Heavy Civil Inc. received two safety awards at the Heavy Construction Contractors Association (HCCA) Safety and Infrastructure Awards Dinner, held at the Chantilly National Golf and Country Club on April 24. The awards recognize outstanding safety performance and excellence in construction.

Wagman accepted a 2024 Safety Award in the Highway Construction/Bridge Construction/General Contractor category of 500,000 to 1 million manhours for work performed in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., region.

Additionally, Teresa Flores Rodriguez, a group leader at Wagman Heavy Civil, received the 2024 Career Safety Award. With selection decided by the HCCA Safety Committee, this award recognizes an individual who has made a significant impact on the safety of his or her workplace by demonstrating excellent safety practices, suggesting improvements and mentoring others.

Rodriguez is an advocate for positive changes in her line of work and looks out for her crew and the traveling public on her projects.

The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum will sponsor a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City on Saturday, June 8.

The coach bus will depart from LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, at 6:30 a.m. and arrive at the gardens by 10 a.m. Participants will have approximately five hours to explore the gardens at their leisure before the return

trip, with the bus departing New York at 3 p.m. and arriving back in Lancaster at around 6:30 p.m.

Designed by the renowned landscape architects John Charles and Frederick Law Olmstead, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden first opened its gates in May 1911. Today, the gardens are home to more than 14,000 types of plants spread across 52

acres, featuring a variety of gardens, pavilions, and the notable C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum.

Tickets include admission to the gardens, round-trip coach bus transportation, and driver gratuity. Meals are not included, but dining options are available within the gardens. Participants are advised to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and to bring

their own water bottles. Space is limited, and advance registration is recommended. Ticket sales will close once sold out or by Wednesday, June 5, whichever comes first.
