ASinking her way into a Hoop Shoot victory

t just 9 years old, Carrigan Price has secured her spot in basketball history. She is the first participant from the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 Hoop Shoot to advance to the national competition, where she not only won first place in her age division, but she also took home an award as the highest-scoring girl in the entire competition. Her win came after a nail-biting shootout victory on April 26 in Chicago, earning her national recognition and her name on the wall at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts.

Carrigan, who is the daughter of Ryan and Michele Price, is a fourth-grader at Landisville Intermediate Center. Her journey to the national competition began in November when she participated in the local event in Columbia.

Carrigan’s winning path was paved with consistent excellence. At each of the previous stageslocal, district, state and regional - she sank 23 out of 25 free throws each time. She ultimately qualified to represent her region at the national competition hosted by the Elks organization, which includes six divisions split by gender and age: 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 to 13.

In Chicago, Carrigan faced stiff competition and intense pressure. After making 24 out of 25 free throws in regulation, she found herself tied with another contestant. What followed was a dramatic series of five shootouts of five shots each. In the end, Carrigan emerged victorious, scoring 45 out of 50 to clinch the national title by a single shot.

“I felt happy because it was my first year, and I didn’t think I could make it all the way and win nationals,” Carrigan said. She wasn’t just the top in her division. Her overall score made her the highest-scoring girl across all age groups at the event. That achievement earned her the Getty Powell Award, which she will receive in June at the Elks national convention in Kansas City.

Carrigan’s journey began almost by chance. Her parents noticed an article about the local Hoop Shoot in the Merchandiser and encouraged her to give it a try. It turned out to be a full-circle moment. Both Michele and her brother, Mike Alpaugh, had competed in the Elks Hoop Shoot in their youth, though they hadn’t initially realized it was the same program.

Although Carrigan played basketball, she wasn’t used to

The staff at the Horn Farm Center in York are taking a setback and turning it into opportunity.

Three years ago, the only livable structure on the property, an 1840s farmhouse, was destroyed by fire.

Now plans are in motion to not only restore and preserve the nonprofit’s farmhouse, but also to transform the space inside into an educational center to benefit people from across the region.

Horn Farm Center, located at 4945 Horn Road, York, has been busy fundraising for the build, and it celebrated the next step in the project with a groundbreaking ceremony at the end of March.

“These last three years we’ve been running programs for hundreds of local residents, all outdoors in all weather, on dozens of topics related to regenerative farming, ecology, growing your own food and generally reconnecting with the land,” explained Alexis Campbell, the organization’s executive director. “Our instructors and community have done wonderfully, but it will be amazing to triple our capacity for education and do so no matter what the

Aastha Horizons is an Indian philanthropic initiative that benefits everyone

Philanthropy is universal and timeless. The act of giving back is not bound by race, ethnicity or color.

The Aastha Horizons Fund is managed and operated by a group made up of predominantly Lancaster County Indian-Asian Americans. Its mission is to help everyone in an attempt to make their home a better place to live.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

“My favorite part is the philanthropy,” said Manjeet Kaur, one of the founders of the Aastha Horizons Fund and a resident of Manheim Township. “We’ve been given so much by Lancaster County, and now we want to give back. Everybody does it for different reasons. I saw my family and dad (give back). When you see enough of it, it feels like your duty.”

“Giving begins at home,” said Reema Parikha, an advisory group member who resides in East Hempfield Township. “I feel like this fund is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s amazing to see how these funds are used.”

Overseen by an advisory group and conducted in association with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Aastha Horizons Fund is a giving circle that raises funds through donations and distributes them to Lancaster County nonprofits via a grant application process. The fund’s advisory group meets on a

Translated from Indian culture, Aastha means faith, belief, trust and hope for a better tomorrow.

“Aastha is a very simple word,” said Kaur. “As humans, we can approach people who are looking at the dawn and give them a little bit of extra hope for a better tomorrow. It’s what we want to do. We want to make a difference. We want (the fund) to continue to grow.”

Aastha Horizons Fund’s grant process is initiated with advisory group members inviting local nonprofits to apply for grants. Once the grant applications are received, the advisory members meet as a group, discuss the nonprofits’ merits and needs and then vote on the applications.

Before a final approval is

granted, the advisory group interviews officials of the nonprofits requesting the grants.

“We try to focus on organizations that are less heard of,” said Nishit Trivedi, a member of the advisory group who resides in West Hempfield Township.

“It’s not just the money,” said Rao Sankarmanchi, an advisory group member and a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We’re looking for people to partner with as volunteers. We want to help out in any way we can.”

Typically, the Aastha Horizons Funds awards grants in the $2,500 range. In 2024, the fund awarded five grants to local nonprofits, and over the course of its three-year existence, the Aastha Horizons Funds has granted more than 10 awards, including ones to

focusing specifically on free throws. But she rose to the challenge, driven by her competitive spirit and strong family support.

From the start, her dad helped her design a rigorous practice regimen.

“Every single time we had free time, me and my dad would go to schools, parks and Spooky Nook, and we’d do simulations,” she recalled. They mimicked shootout conditions, even practicing scenarios where Carrigan would shoot first or second, with rounds of 10 and 15 shots.

“I wanted her to be prepared for every situation,” Ryan shared, and that turned out to be a great strategy. “At the national event, anything that could happen, happened.”

As nationals approached, Carrigan’s shooting percentages climbed.

“She was always stuck in the 23 range, but as we got closer, she was getting 24s and 25s,” Ryan said. “When she punched the first 10 out of 10 in Chicago, I was feeling good.”

Carrigan herself was remarkably composed under pressure. Spectators

and commentators noted her poise, as she smiled through the competition. Her calmness belied her nerves.

“When I got there, I was nervous,” she admitted. “I looked through a book of stats and was worried about the competition’s numbers.”

Beyond her impressive performance, Carrigan also displayed grace and sportsmanship. Val Kissinger, chair of the Hoop Shoot for Columbia Elks 1074, accompanied the Prices to Chicago and was struck by Carrigan’s maturity.

“One thing that I really admired about Carrigan is that the little girl who got second place was sitting right beside her after Carrigan won,” she said, “and Carrigan was consoling her.”

For her efforts, Carrigan received a medal, a hat and a trophy at the awards ceremony. She traveled to nationals with her parents and her older sister, Cassidy, where she enjoyed themed events like trivia night, a “Space Jam” movie night and, of course, the competition. She especially

liked trading custom Hoop Shoot cards with other participants and meeting kids from across the country, including as far away as Alaska.

Carrigan’s shooting style includes a few personal touches. She wears her lucky shirt and basketball shoes and always remembers her dad’s “golden rule”: Don’t miss two in a row. When that happened at the national competition, she quickly regrouped.

“When I think I’m going to miss, I take a breath before I shoot,” she said, noting that in the final round, she sealed her victory with determination and grit. “I said in my

Class

head, ‘I’m ending this,’ and I punched a 5 out of 5.”

Youths can mark their calendars for the next local Hoop Shoot on Sunday, Nov. 9. For more information, visit elks.org/ hoopshoot.

Fans can watch Carrigan’s performance on YouTube at https://bit .ly/3YH1403 (Carrigan’s shots begin at about the 36-minute mark) and discover why Carrigan’s cousin gave her a new moniker.

“My sister told me something my cousin had said while he was watching it online,” Carrigan shared. “He said, ‘You’re the No. 1 8-to-9 girls’ Michael Jordan.’”

The idea to turn the house into an education center came from the organization’s commitment to deepen community engagement and expanding access to hands-on learning, Campbell said.

“After the fire, we had the opportunity not just to rebuild what was lost, but to reimagine how the house could serve the broader mission of the Horn Farm Center,” she stated. “We saw the potential to create a welcoming, multifunctional hub for workshops, gatherings and collaboration. By transforming the house into an education center, we are centering our priorities and creating new opportunities to grow our impact: fostering ecological literacy, building resilient communities and connecting people to the land.”

The project has been stalled by delays. Insurance covered replacement costs, but it did not account for the requirement to bring the building up to commercial code for the first time, the depth of repairs needed to restore a 160-year-old building or the vision to upgrade it to a year-round education center.

“While the original farmhouse had great character, it had all the limitations of an 1800s farmhouse intended to house a family running a farm, not an organization wanting to share resources and education for this entire region,” Campbell said.

The Horn Farm Center worked through several variations of building design in an effort to balance the needs of York County and the surrounding region with the needs of the organization and its budget.

“Our final project design brought the price tag down to $1.4 million, a price that gave us pause despite knowing the challenges of rising material costs and bringing an historic structure up to commercial code,” said Lauren Hayman, president of the board of directors. “We are an organization founded by volunteers with an annual operating budget under $400,000.”

Local individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations have helped to raise nearly $1.2 million,

providing funding for the first two phases of the project: design and construction.

Now the organization is focused on phases three and four, which include occupancy and outfitting the building for operations.

The final phase for the new education center will be post-construction site work and beautification, which includes landscaping, hardscaping, a rain garden and rain catchment cisterns.

“We’re inviting supporters to become part of this project through recognition opportunities like wall and window plaques, which is a great way to leave a lasting legacy in the new building,” Campbell shared. “We’re also looking to partner with local businesses to help transform the building into a learning space. We’re seeking in-kind donations to help equip the education center with furniture, technology and educational tools. These contributions will directly support our mission and help us create a space that’s both functional and inspiring for learners of all ages.”

She hopes people will continue to help the project reach completion.

“Donating to the Horn

Farm Center is an investment in the future - of our land, our communities and the next generation of environmental stewards,” she said. “At a time when so many people are searching for solutions to ecological and climate challenges, Horn Farm Center is providing hope and empowering people to have a regenerative relationship with the land.”

The Horn Farm Center provides a place for people to reconnect with nature, learn how to grow food with care and discover what it means to live in balance with the world around us, she said.

“After losing our historic farmhouse to fire, we now have a rare opportunity not just to rebuild, but to reach more people in our community with our mission,” she noted. “Financial support helps us turn this moment of loss into one of hope and renewal. When you donate to the Horn Farm Center’s Education Center Building Fund, you’re not just helping to rebuild a building. You’re helping to create a more hopeful future.”

“As we’re going through the grant process, the organizations are getting to know us, and they’re sharing about us,” said Rakesh Popli, a member of the advisory group and a resident of West Lampeter Township. “In three years, I feel like we’ve accomplished some significant achievements.”

“I think the word is getting out (about the Aastha Horizons Fund’s work),” said founding member Deepa Balepur, who resides in West Hempfield Township.

Aastha Horizons Funds raises money through

events and private donations, some of which originate from the members of the advisory group.

“It’s a giving circle,” said Trivedi. “We have resources coming in, and the funds are managed by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and the grants are written by the community foundation. While the funds are sitting there, they are invested and managed properly.”

Near the end of 2021, Balepur was an LCCF board member when she had an idea that evolved into the Aastha Horizons Fund.

“Deepa started the process,” said Kaur. “It was her vision, and she connected people. She called me to be part of the process. I was already involved with a similar organization, but we were mostly putting out fires. What Deepa told me is, ‘We’re trying to do it as continually funding.’ That really resonated with me.”

YCL announces summer reading program

York County Libraries’ (YCL) “Color Our World” SummerQuest program will start on Monday, June 2. Early registration is open at www.yorklibraries.org/ SummerQuest.

The free program is designed for children and youths from birth to age 18. All participants must have a library card. Individuals may sign up for a free library card at www .yorklibraries.org.

The first day to begin working toward badges will be June 2. Participants will track their reading and activities to complete four virtual badges. SummerQuest will include a variety of programs and entertainment, including Mark

DeRose Music and Art, Science Heroes: Adventure of the Missing Color, Crime Solvers, Leap Into Science: Magnet Magic, and storybook character Pete the Cat. SummerQuest will run through Sunday, Aug. 17.

“I was exposed to the concept of collective giving at Lancaster County Community Foundation,” said Balepur. “It was very intriguing. As I started talking to people, there were others who wanted to be engaged as well. Everybody brings different levels of expertise. It started with ‘it sounds cool,’ but it can be better if we bring other people on board.”

PCA&D plans classes for high school students

This summer, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s (PCA&D) Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) will offer pre-college classes for high school students in grades nine through 12.

The classes will offer the opportunity to earn college credit while allowing students to explore new avenues for expression and refine skills. The classes also provide a way to explore various studios and help inform future class selections, as well as offer the opportunity to take classes in media that might not be offered at their high school. Scholarships for summer pre-college classes are available by request from teachers and counselors. Families should contact CCE with questions.

Both in-person and online pre-college classes will be offered and include creative experiences such as Introduction to Observational Painting, Introduction to Video Editing, Graphic Novel and Comic Creation, Fantasy Digital Illustration and Introduction to Short Story Writing, as well as always-popular, intro-level classes such as Introduction to Digital Painting, Introduction to Digital Photography, Introduction to Oil Painting and Creative Writing: Finding Your Voice.

Many of these classes are taught by faculty from Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s degree programs, including Raven Eckman,

Randy Haldeman, Evan James, Leah Limpert Walt and Jason Ward.

PCA&D instructors are professional artists, designers and creatives who actively work in the fields they teach. This gives summer pre-college students the chance to explore creative industries and experience what it’s like to work in a college studio environment.

Classes will run over two sessions throughout the month of July and offer afternoon and evening options. Visit www.pcad .edu/precollege to see the full list of options and links to class descriptions, supply lists, instructors, dates, times and cost.

The PCA&D welcomes learners of all kinds, providing a comprehensive range of educational opportunities, including bachelor’s and associate degrees, certificates and professional credentials, as well as enrichment and lifelong learning programs for students all ages.

PCA&D offers creative experiences for adults, high school students and children in grades one through nine. Its goal is to provide community education for beginners and aspiring professionals, as well as both credit-bearing and noncredit class options occurring throughout the year on evenings and weekends, both online and in-person. Current class listings can be found at www.pcad.edu/cce.
