Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville

In the mid- to late 1800s, a “conspiracy of good” permeated the streets of Columbia as citizens helped freedom seekers navigate the Underground Railroad. William Wright, one of the town founders and a fervent abolitionist, is often credited with helping to establish the path to freedom for people escaping slavery. Now a group of people is working to bring history to life through the Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
The project launched in December, with a tentative opening date set for the end of 2026.
“Antebellum Columbia wasn’t a
perfect place,” said Mark Stewart, a member of the Underground Railroad Center of Columbia (URCC), a nonprofit organization
“When people walk out of this museum, I want them to tell everybody they know, ‘You won’t believe what I just saw.’”
spearheading the project. “Far from it. But it was the place where people made a stand, often at extreme personal risk, and said, ‘This stops here.’ Those
individuals committed to an ideal and did the right thing during one of the bleakest times in our nation’s history. To me, that is a story worth telling.”
The museum will be located at 331 Locust St., in a building constructed in 1900 that originally housed a Woolworth’s on the first floor and a Masonic hall upstairs. The 8,000-square-foot attraction will feature informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of the people who worked to help freedom seekers.
Although plans are just getting underway for the museum, Stewart has high hopes. He envisions the first floor full of exhibits telling the story of Underground Railroad activity throughout
On Saturday, May 18, the parking lot at Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church will be full of activity. The church, located at 404 Hellam St., will host its annual Spring Fling beginning at 8 a.m.
The event will feature a
rummage sale, a plant sale and lots of food, said Donna Ream, a member of the Spring Fling committee.
“The food is always good, and everybody eats well,” she said. “We have homemade baked goods and candy. We have hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches with all the trimmings. We have
There will be something for anyone who loves books or art (or both!) at Art in the Park and Books in the Basement. Create Columbia and the Columbia Public Library are coming together for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 24 S. Sixth St., and in Locust Street Park in Columbia.
As Janette Toth-Musser of Create Columbia explained, the nonprofit organization decided
to hold its art event in conjunction with the library’s annual fundraiser for the first time.
“This brings attention to both organizations,” she said. “The library fundraiser will be a book sale from the library’s basement, along with silent auction items like special books, artworks and the ever-popular homemade cakes. The library will benefit from the sale of these items.”
In the park, a variety of artists will set up stands displaying traditional and abstract art. The Columbia School of Music
will entertain, and members of the Columbia High School drama booster club will also participate. So far, about a dozen spaces are confirmed, but TothMusser noted there is room for more.
“If you are an artist or a nonprofit organization and would like to set up a space, contact us at chair@ createcolumbia.org, and we will make an arrangement,” she said. “Artists’ work will be for sale. They retain their profits.” While Create Columbia will benefit from a charge to set up a space, any nonprofit organizations that
participate will be able to do so without paying a fee.
Create Columbia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Columbia. “We hold fundraising events every year, including a popular Art in the Gardens garden tour,” Toth-Musser shared. “We place an artist and musician in each garden that is on the tour. … This year, the tour will be on Saturday, June 8.”
In past years, Art in the Park was always a popular event in Columbia, she noted, and Create Columbia is working to bring it back to its full impact. “We are hoping to grow this event in the coming years,” she said.

Pennsylvania. Upstairs, he hopes the museum will feature the stories of people who supported the effort and will showcase what it was like to live in Columbia in the 1800s.
Traditional museum exhibits will be interspersed with high-tech, interactive features that combine artificial intelligence and 3D holography to bring Columbia characters to life.
Telling these stories will require some artistic liberties, Stewart said, noting that much of the history of the Underground Railroad was not written down.
Stewart, who moved to Columbia in 2021 with his wife, Sarah, is particularly invested in the project. His background includes museum work, and he is living in the home built by William Wright in 1795. Thousands of freedom seekers came through his house and sat in his living room, ready to start their new lives.
He said he was familiar with Columbia and some of its history before moving to the area, but he’s learned
more about how invested the town was in helping others.
“What I did not know is how involved the people of Columbia were,” he shared. “They were all-in on this.”
He envisions the museum as a place to pay homage to the people who played major roles in an important part of American history, and he hopes the site will be an economic boom for Columbia.
“I think about the people who sat in my living room and probably had a moment where they thought, ‘I made it.’ We want to capture that emotional moment in this museum,” Stewart said.
“When people walk out of this museum, I want them to tell everybody they know, ‘You won’t believe what I just saw.’”
As work gets underway on the museum, the URCC has launched a social media initiative called “Today in Underground Railroad History.” To learn more, search for “The Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania” on Facebook or visit https://columbiaurc.org.
Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, is hosting two exhibits through Thursday, May 30. They will be open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibits are closed on Wednesdays; previous information incorrectly stated that the exhibits are open on Wednesdays.

Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a new bucket list of things to see, do, explore, and eat in America’s 55th National Heritage Area. Visitors and local residents can use the list to explore 55 experiences featuring SNHA businesses, events, and landmarks in Lancaster and York counties.
Through the bucket list, people can explore the region’s history, including York’s and Lancaster’s brief stints as the nation’s capital, African American and Civil War history, the region’s role in Colonial America as a gateway to the frontier, ghost towns, railroads, the York State Fair, and the more than 25 covered bridges in Lancaster County. Outdoor activities include discovering a nature preserve, finding a waterfall, and being in two states at once when straddling the Mason-Dixon Line. More than 100 miles of trails and more than 10 scenic overlooks await discovery. People may also learn about the region’s produce, such as the Washington Boro Jet Star tomato, the York Imperial apple, and the native pawpaw fruit. Plenty of produce is available at the area’s
farmers markets.
People are invited to share their bucket list experiences by snapping photos and posting them to social media, tagging @SusqNHA in the post. Those who complete at least five items will receive a Susquehanna National Heritage Area sticker.
People may also bring their National Park Service passport to collect official

For more than 50 years, representatives of the JLL have graced the stage at the Fulton Theatre, presenting shows that not only supported renovations at the theater but also made a significant impact on local organizations.
Sponsored by the Louise Steinman von Hess Foundation as the Centennial Presenting Sponsor and Woodstream Foundation, the gala will bring together active and sustaining members, community partners, and friends of the JLL for an evening of food, drinks, dancing, and live music provided by the Mama Tried Band. Members of the church will set up stands with yard sale items, including clothing and accessories, and people in the community are encouraged to contact the church to rent a space for their own yard sale table.
“Something we’re doing this year that we’ve never done before is each of the stands from the church will put together a basket for a silent auction,” Ream shared. “When people visit the stand, they can put in a chance to win it.”
Although the food is good and the rummage sale features a lot of variety, the plant sale is the biggest moneymaker for the church, Ream noted. It will feature a variety of plants, focusing on perennials, along with gently used lawn ornaments and garden décor.
Children’s activities will
be planned during Spring Fling to keep kids occupied while parents shop. Proceeds from the event will be used for improvement projects around the church and for the church’s general fund, Ream said. It takes a team of volunteers to organize Spring Fling, and other members of the committee include Phil Lehman, Barbara Stoner and Bonnie Shaffer.
Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church is home to Phoebe’s Closet, a community clothing bank, as well as the Eastern York Food Pantry. The church holds services on Sundays at 9 a.m. Vacation Bible school will take place this summer in partnership with Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam.

Narvon resident and author Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb.
Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War.
“Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served, and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers.
One of the boys included in the book, Nathaniel McClean Gwynne, was still a civilian when he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper.
“At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go into battle,” said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), ‘That’s not why I’m here,’ and he went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore.
Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor
Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin Williams of Georgia in the book. Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties. “Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore,
adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”
Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” “Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at Moores Memorial Library, Christiana, on April 27. Moore will be featured at several upcoming events, including the Civil War Living History Encampment in Quarryville, from Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, and the Memorial Day event in Maytown on Monday, May 27, from
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In June, Moore will be at the Strawberry Festival in Bainbridge on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m., and the Burning Bridge in Columbia on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. He will appear at the White Chimneys Estate in Gap on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., and in August, he will be featured at a 2 p.m. presentation at Hopewell Furnace in Elverson on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Moore has more than four decades of experience as an educator and he recalled teaching the Civil War through the eyes of the boys who took part. More information about Moore and his books may be found at www.jarthur moore.com.
