Celebrate 80 years of tradition at May Day

For decades, a unique celebration has been held in Columbia to welcome the change in season and bring the community together.

“This year’s event marks the 80th year the town of Columbia has held this special ceremony,” said Ella McCarty, a Columbia High School junior who explained the history of May Day. “This ceremony is a welcoming of spring and a historical tradition that holds character within the town, being one of the only places to still hold this event.”

The May Day festivities will take place on Saturday, May 3, in the high school gymnasium,

901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

“Students in grades seven to 11 will perform a maypole dance,” Ella shared. “Alexis Phillips will

perform vocal performances. A lyrical dance will be performed by Reece Schaeffer and Halie Rineer, and the ladies of the court and their escorts will perform a waltz to the song ‘Open Arms.’”

The celebration will also include presentation of the members of the court.

Members of this year’s court are Sydney Droege, Eva Fanous, Sehrena Finks-Garcia, Laynssa Parker, Isabelle Redding, Madelyn Redding, Riley Schaeffer, Taylor Williams, Breanna Young, Miguel Aviles, Owen Brady, John Buzzendore, Jadin Perez, Loudon Rupp, Luke Rupp, Charlie Vasquez, Alexymahr Whitley and Gage Wolf.

“The princess of the court, who is in ninth grade, is selected with a student body vote in grades seven to nine,” Ella explained. “The senior ladies of the court are selected by grades 10 to 12. The queen is then selected by a

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When

Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others

People who attend the bingo will also have the opportunity to win prize baskets of baby items, beauty supplies, baking tools, Nissley Vineyards products and more.

The event will feature 20 games of regular bingo, with four special-prize games for an additional cost. A 50/50 giveaway will also be held. Food, including baked goods, and

“We are collecting nonperishable items for the food bank that is housed in our church,” Morrow said, referencing the Columbia Food Bank. “For every nonperishable item brought, you get a free (giveaway) ticket.”

This is the first time the church members are hosting a community bingo, and organizers are hopeful that the event will raise muchneeded funds for church projects and initiatives.

“Previous fundraisers have restored the nave,

fixed the audio system and fixed the church roof,” Morrow shared. “The proceeds from this event will go toward new lighting in the sanctuary, upgrading the heating and cooling system in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Hall and supporting our property budget.”

She noted that the church building, located at 340 Locust St. in Columbia, is truly a community space.

“Our church is not only used by our congregation, but by local Girl Scout troops, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of PA, as well

are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz

are just a few of the local participants.

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conver-

final vote by the 12th-grade class.” The queen will be crowned at the event by the maid of honor, she said. May Day is a holiday that traces its roots to Europe and ancient festivals to mark the beginning of summer. Celebrated around the world on or close to May 1, the holiday includes elements of nature such as flowers and foliage, the crowning of a queen and the centerpiece of the maypole, a tall wooden pole often painted or decorated with flowers. People traditionally dance around the pole with long ribbons attached to the top of the structure.

Keeping a tradition like May Day going for eight decades requires dedication, commitment and the efforts of a team, Ella remarked.

“This event would not be possible to have without the help of our close-knit community,” she said. “We thank everyone that has helped to be a part of this long-holding tradition to keep it alive and running.” May Day is open to the public. There is an admission charge, with one price for adults and one for students and senior citizens.

The show features cast members depicting different types of bugs, modern dance numbers and elaborate costumes and props.

by local actors, musicians, and the Ephrata Cloister Chorus. The production ran every summer Saturday until it closed in 1989. In the following years, the space hosted weddings and community events until it fell into disrepair and was completely closed in 2020.

In 2021, the Ephrata Cloister Associates launched a revitalization project, funded through private donations and local grants. Excavation began in August 2024, and major construction wrapped up in early winter.

The updated venue now features four terraces, including two paved levels for improved accessibility to the stage and seating areas. The amphitheater accommodates approximately 250 guests, with options to sit on stone walls, benches, or chairs and blankets.

While the core of the project is complete, minor

renovations to the set buildings and surrounding landscaping will continue into the summer.

Donations are still being accepted. Gifts of set minimum amounts will be recognized in the Donor Book of Honor or on the Donor Wall of Honor located on the stage set buildings. During the open house, a draft of the Donor Book of Honor and a preliminary design of the Donor Wall of Honor will be on display in the Visitor Center.

Golf event to help fund cystic fibrosis research

Team Shad will host its 20th annual Score Fore a Cure Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 26, on the East Course at Briarwood Golf Club, 4775 W. Market St., York. Registration will be held from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m., with a captains’ meeting at 7:50 a.m. The four-person scramble format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams. The event will also include prizes for closest to the pin on par 3’s, pot of gold, a putting contest, and a hole in one contest.

The fee includes the green fee, use of a cart, coffee, doughnuts, lunch, and beverages. Alcohol may be purchased at the course.

All proceeds will benefit

the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). The organization works to fund research to find a cure and improve the lives of those with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease. Since 2004, Team Shad has contributed more than $525,000 to the CFF. Shad, after whom Team Shad is named, was diagnosed with CFF 20 years ago, and since then, life expectancy of people with this condition has increased from 18 to 61 years.

Entry will be limited to the first 144 players to pay the registration fee. To sign up or become a sponsor, visit www.team shad.org. Those mailing an entry form must do so by Monday, June 16.
