Annual May Day Celebration Set Columbia High School’s May Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of the school, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. The May Day event is an annual spring festivity that includes entertainment, the May Day court and crowning, and a celebration. This year will mark the the 74th celebration of May Day. The May Day committee extends an invitation to the community to attend and support the celebration. There is a fee to attend, with separate fees set for adults and for students and seniors. May Day is being led by junior Chante Gilbert, sophomore Anonya Bland, and the May Day committee.

Prayer Breakfast Scheduled In Wrightsville The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, hosted by Wrightsville Mayor Michael Albert and local churches, will take place on the National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 2, from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. in the gym at Wrightsville Elementary School, 320 Chestnut St., Wrightsville. The breakfast, themed “Love One Another,” will include prayer led by local pastors, special music and an address from Albert. The event was held for the first time last year, and about 100 people attended. Organizers are looking forward to even more people attending this year. The event is free, although attendees are asked to preregister so organizers can prepare. To register, readers may visit www.wrightsvillechurch.com and click the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast tab. Attendees do not have to be residents of Wrightsville to attend.
Tradition To Offer Fun For All A community tradition that has been beloved for several decades will return on Saturday, May 4, when Kreutz Creek Elementary School holds its annual May Day event. The community is invited to the carnival event, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school, 50 N. Lee St., Hellam. The school playground will be full of games and bounce houses. Apparatus will also be available from a business known for its inflatables and mechanical bulls. Face painting will be available, and attendees may listen to the elementary band and orchestra, directed by Mr. Donahue and Ms. Duane. Instead of doling out homework and grades, staff members will offer edible goods at the Teacher’s Cafe. When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope See Golf Outing pg 2
