Books, bargains and baked goods at library sale
BY CAT SHANNON
“The Friends of Kreutz Creek library sale is a huge, well-organized event with books displayed on 75 tables,” said Brent Peterman, president of the Friends group. “We will start Friday morning with over 24,000 books. Volunteers will keep organizing the tables throughout the sale Friday and Saturday, and we will have plenty of books available for the ... bag discount Saturday afternoon.”
The book sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in the garage bays of the Hellam Township public works department, 45 Walnut Springs Road, York.
Books will be available in numerous categories, including
fiction, nonfiction and children’s books. The inventory will be divided into format type, such as hardcover books, trade paperbacks and large-print books.
“For hardcover books, we divide out some fan favorite authors like Patterson, Roberts, Baldacci, Steel,” Peterman said.
“We will also have large sections of romance fiction, inspirational fiction - Amish, Christian - and sci-fi and fantasy.”
For children’s books, items are divided into categories such as board books, storybooks, junior chapter books and young adult novels.
“Nonfiction is separated into over 10 topics that allow shoppers to browse their areas of interest,” Peterman remarked. “Some of the favorite topics include biography/ memoirs, arts, history and politics, nature, hobbies and sports. We will have a large selection of
cookbooks. Many shoppers enjoy purchasing several cookbooks of various cooking styles just to explore new meal ideas.”
Along with books, the sale will feature a wide selection of movies on DVD and music on CD, along with puzzles.
“Puzzles are always a big draw, and we sort them by piece count so that whether you prefer 100 pieces or 1,000 pieces, shoppers can find some new challenges,” Peterman commented.
Food will also be available for purchase.
“The baked goods tables will be overflowing with cookies, brownies, loafs and many other treats,” he said. “Book shopping can work up a serious hunger, and we can help with that.”
On Saturday, from noon to 3 p.m., shoppers can take advantage of a fill-a-bag sale for one low price.

Wagman Construction achieves safety award
Wagman Construction announced it has achieved Diamond Level in Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) STEP Safety Management System.
Founded more than three decades ago, STEP is a proven system that provides the framework to measure, strengthen, and build industry-leading safety programs that enable top-performing ABC members to achieve incident rates nearly six times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics construction industry average.
Wagman’s award-winning safety program is built on proactive measures that identify and mitigate risks before they become hazards. The company has a team of full-time dedicated safety personnel who educate and enforce safe working conditions on every project. Before the start of any project, Wagman develops a project-specific safety plan, which includes a comprehensive approach to health and safety guidelines to protect both workers and occupants.
Additionally, a Hazard Risk Assessment is conducted to identify potential safety issues, which is then incorporated into daily safety huddles, covering
general site safety, tool and equipment usage and other critical work hazards.
STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies on key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing health and safety programs that reduce job site incidents. Wagman excelled in areas such as comprehensive safety training, rigorous subcontractor screening, detailed project safety plans and continuous improvement initiatives that emphasize hazard identification and prevention.
According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, STEP participants, regardless of company size or type of work, can reduce recordable incidents up to 83%, making the best-performing companies 576% safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average. Ratings range from Diamond, the highest, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participant.
Wagman, headquartered in York, is a multi-faceted construction firm with major operations in heavy civil, general construction and geotechnical construction services. For more information, visit www.wagman.com.

Scholarship and tuition waiver programs posted
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is accepting student applications for the 2025-26 Grow Pennsylvania Scholarship Grant Program, more commonly known as the Grow PA Grant.
The Grow PA Grant Program was authorized under Act 89 of 2024 to help reverse the trend of young Pennsylvanians seeking education and job opportunities in other states. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation, and agree to work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation.
Grant recipients will be required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months for each year they receive the grant; failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.
PHEAA will administer the program for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
working with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), the Independent Fiscal Office, and other stakeholders.
The application and a list of eligible programs of study or majors can be found at www.pheaa.org/growpa.
In addition, PHEAA joins Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) in administering the Grow PA Tuition Waiver Program, which allows eligible nonresident PASSHE students pursuing in-demand occupations to pay tuition at an in-state rate rather than an out-of-state rate.
Students selected for the Grow PA Tuition Waiver Program are required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months of each academic year for which they received a tuition waiver; failure to meet this requirement will result in the tuition waiver’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.
More information on this program is forthcoming.
PennDOT seeks feedback from the public
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking the public’s feedback on the agency’s services this winter at www.surveymonkey .com/r/2025PDWinter.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
circulation@engleonline.com

The survey will be available through Monday, April 28, and should take about five minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous.
The 16-question survey asks respondents about their
timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities, and how they rate PennDOT’s winter services. Respondents are also asked how they receive PennDOT roadway information and whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services. During the winter, www.511pa.com offers its standard traffic and incident information while adding PennDOT plowtruck locations, winter roadway conditions, and other services.

Travel Fair
are new this year.
“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”
Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.
The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.
The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.
Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.
At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”
Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.
“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”
According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep
their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there.
They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”
Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.
“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

May Day from pg 1
welcoming of spring and a historical tradition that holds character within the town, being one of the only places to still hold this event.”
The May Day festivities will take place on Saturday, May 3, in the high school gymnasium, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
“Students in grades seven to 11 will perform a maypole dance,” Ella shared. “Alexis Phillips will perform vocal performances. A lyrical dance will be performed by Reece Schaeffer and Halie Rineer, and the ladies of the court and their escorts
will perform a waltz to the song ‘Open Arms.’”
The celebration will also include presentation of the members of the court.
Members of this year’s court are Sydney Droege, Eva Fanous, Sehrena Finks-Garcia, Laynssa Parker, Isabelle Redding, Madelyn Redding, Riley Schaeffer, Taylor Williams, Breanna Young, Miguel Aviles, Owen Brady, John Buzzendore, Jadin Perez, Loudon Rupp, Luke Rupp, Charlie Vasquez, Alexymahr Whitley and Gage Wolf.
“The princess of the court, who is in ninth grade, is selected with a student body vote in
grades seven to nine,” Ella explained. “The senior ladies of the court are selected by grades 10 to 12. The queen is then selected by a final vote by the 12th-grade class.” The queen will be crowned at the event by the maid of honor, she said.
May Day is a holiday that traces its roots to Europe and ancient festivals to mark the beginning of summer. Celebrated around the world on or close to May 1, the holiday includes elements of nature such as flowers and foliage, the crowning of a queen and the centerpiece of the maypole, a tall wooden pole often painted or decorated with flowers.
People traditionally dance around the pole with long ribbons attached to the top of the structure.
Keeping a tradition like May Day going for eight decades requires dedication, commitment and the efforts of a team, Ella remarked.
“This event would not be possible to have without the help of our close-knit community,” she said. “We thank everyone that has helped to be a part of this long-holding tradition to keep it alive and running.”
May Day is open to the public. There is an admission charge, with one price for adults and one for students and senior citizens.

Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) invites audiences to step into the world of xiaochi, or “small eats.” Live food demonstrations will feature popular Asian street foods from Burma, Thailand, and Cambodia. The Temple Breakers, a breakdancing team from Temple University, will perform between each country’s presentation. Attendees may sample small bites and beverages. The event will also include a reception to celebrate the opening of “Ikebana”
from pg 6
(“Giving Life to Flowers”) by Lancaster AAPI artists from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Regitz Gallery. Experience the cultural richness of the local Asian American and Pacific Islander community through a collaborative art exhibit showcasing the artists’ interpretations of “Ikebana,” a Japanese art form that focuses on harmony and minimalism. The exhibit will be on display until Friday, May 30. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
