Making memories on the basketball court

Every time they stepped onto the court this season, members of the boys’ basketball team at Eastern York High School focused on a goal. They wanted to win, of course, but they also had their eyes on the prize: making it to the state championship. While the team fell just short of that this year, they still had an outstanding season, featuring a game the players said they’ll never forget.

“Growing up, I saw the older players going to the Giant Center in Hershey for the district game,” said senior and team captain Carter Foote-Renwick. “Getting to play in the district championship was kind of a dream come true. It was amazing.”

Eastern York took on Big Spring in the game, held on March 1. They knew it was going to be a tough game going in, said coach

Troy Sowers, who noted Big Spring is a strong opponent. “Each team played as hard as humanly possible for 32 minutes to win that title,” he stated. “We had to stay mentally tough and stick to our game plan.”

“We were confident in our abilities to win the game.”

Despite trailing by one point with less than five minutes to go in the game, Eastern rallied to win, besting Big Spring 55 to 50. It was the school’s first district championship since 2010 and fourth overall.

“We were confident in our abilities to win the game,” said Carter Wamsley, a junior who is also team captain. “There was nobody who had a doubt. We

believed in our coaches, and we believed in ourselves.”

From the district game, the team advanced toward the state championship, beating South Allegheny on March 8 and Valley View on March 12 before taking on Hampton High School on March 15. Although their run to the top stopped there, the players are proud of all they’ve achieved this season and how much they’ve overcome.

“We had a bumpy road this year, and our team definitely caught fire later in the season,” said Brady Seitz, a junior and team captain. He noted that he wouldn’t change a thing, however, about the season - or the team.

“My favorite thing has been getting to do this with my friends,” Brady stated. “You’re never playing alone. I’m with guys I’ve hung out with my whole life, and I would not want to do this with anyone else.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 29, at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Registration

will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

This is the second year for the event, which originated after K-9 officer Michael Carpenter suggested the fundraiser. “He had the idea to hold a golf tournament, and after talking with other first responders, he learned that such events are a huge draw for the public and are

If you come to see “Little Shop of Horrors” at Eastern York High School, be prepared to laugh while also taking home an important lesson.

“I think the message of this show is that you don’t need to change yourself for people to like you,” said Lillian Cichocki, a senior who plays Seymour in the show. “Sometimes, what you were looking for was right in

front of you the entire time, and if you waste too much time trying to fix the world around you, you become blind to what you could have had all along and miss your chance. Even if life is hard, the best thing you can do is keep being yourself no matter what.”

The Eastern York Broadway Knights will present “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. from Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, with an additional performance at 2:30 p.m. on April 6.

The championship game was my best basketball memory I’ve ever had.”

Troy, who is in his first year as Eastern’s coach but has 25 years of coaching experience, was joined in guiding the team by Eric Sowers, his cousin, and

Travis Sowers, his brother. He said he was impressed with the boys’ attitudes and abilities, but he was also awed by the community support for the team. The team enjoyed a sendoff with the school band and community members, and

they returned as champions with a police and fire truck escort.

“Hundreds of people were out in their driveways and their front lawns or at their windows. My guys were hanging out the windows of the bus like celebrities,” Troy recalled.

“We held the trophy up, and somebody played ‘We Are the Champions.’ It couldn’t have been scripted better for these guys. To come out on top for this game and then have this strong community support, it’s been incredible.”

usually profitable for the department,” said James Pollock, Hellam chief of police.

Last year’s event featured a full roster of players, lots of donations from local businesses and organizations and a great turnout for a post-tournament block party, said Courtney Bullman, police administrator.

“Players last year said the event was very well organized and very enjoyable, and even as workers, it was great to watch the players enjoy themselves,” Bullman noted. “The prizes are also a big draw, and we had a lot of winners who walked away with great items. Overall, it’s a day of fun, food and music, with everything going toward a good cause. What could be better than that?”

Each team in the tournament will have four players, and people can sign up as a team or individually, with solo players placed on teams. Special competitions will be held, including men’s and women’s longest drive, which will have cash prizes, Bullman said. Giveaway items will include gift baskets, signed sporting equipment and more.

Following the tournament, Burning Bridge Tavern, 108 Hellam St., Wrightsville, will host a meal and will feature live music.

Proceeds from the event will support the health, training and well-being of the police department’s K-9 officers. “We want to keep our dogs in tip-top shape, which means vet visits, special training and providing any and all necessities for them, such as

The department has a new addition to the unit this year, 2-year-old Sage, a black Labrador therapy dog donated by The Hero Academy. “The Hero Academy is a nonprofit organization of volunteers that provides training to service and facility dogs,” explained Mylinda Bull, K-9 handler and school resource officer. “Sage has been training since she was about 10 weeks old and has been such an asset in our elementary schools with me. We are looking forward to being out and about greeting golfers during the tournament.”

The Mountwaybia Club is marking its 100th year of existence. Founded in 1924 by Mrs. Helen Breneman, the club originally drew its members from Columbia and Mountville and along the Lincoln Highway which connects them. While the geographic area has since widened, the club continues to provide a forum for women to read books and research pertinent topics, and present the results during meetings in members’ homes.

Following club tradition, the current meeting year will conclude with a tea in May. Club members are in search of descendants of former and deceased Mountwaybia members who may have memories of the involvement of their mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, or aunts in the club. Descendants are asked to contact Joanna at 717-653-2019 or Deanna at 717-490-0111 by Friday, April

5, to share their recollections of the club.

Charter members of the club included Mrs. J.W. Zehring, Mrs. Michael Rorabaugh, Mrs. W.K. Kendig, Mrs. Oliver Fridy, Miss Louella Fridy, Miss Elizabeth Weaver, Mrs. Clarence Gable, Mrs. Elinor White, Mrs. A.J. Greenleaf, Mrs. A.G. Hess, Mrs. Edward Edgerly, and Mrs. Frank Hege. Set in rundown place called Skid Row, the musical follows an awkward botanist, Seymour Krelborn, as he handles unrequited love for his co-worker, Audrey, while also tending to a very unusual plant. “When a strange, sassy plant shows up and turns his life around, it tests Seymour’s limits of what he is really willing to do for love in a riveting story of murder and mystery,” Lillian shared.

Eastern York’s production will feature a cast, crew and pit orchestra of about 70 students.

Junior Caris Rolph, who plays Audrey, said rehearsing the show has been fun but also challenging, as the cast learned to work around an ever-growing plant, operated by puppeteers. Caris also noted that audiences can expect to see good chemistry on stage, adding, “We all work really well together, which

makes bringing these characters to life fun.”

For Corbett Hilt, a senior who portrays flower-shop owner Mr. Mushnik, the show has provided an opportunity to have fun on stage while putting together an entertaining finished product.

“This production is full of little jokes and puts a little funny twist on a

horror-themed atmosphere,” Corbett said. “Viewers can definitely expect lots of laughs and plot curveballs.”

Tickets for “Little Shop of Horrors” can be purchased at the Broadway Knights website, https://tinyurl .com/5742zsx5, or at the door. The show will be held in the Eastern York Performing Arts Center, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.

Horn Farm sets composting, baking workshops

Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, has scheduled programs. There is a fee, and preregistration is required at https://hornfarmcenter .org. For more information, call 717-757-6441 or email education@ hornfarmcenter.org.

In partnership with the York County Solid Waste Authority, the Horn Farm Center will offer Backyard Composting on Saturday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. This comprehensive, skill-building workshop emphasizes affordability and simplicity, and it is suitable for people with any level of knowledge or experience.

The class will first choose a site for a new compost pile and construct a bin. The low-cost bin uses welded wire fencing that creates a 3-by-3-foot cylinder. Participants will add leaves, kitchen scraps, and any other available and appropriate materials in layers. Participants will also get the opportunity to mix a pile that is pre-existing and see an active pile that is late in the decompositional process. Topics will include uses for finished compost, vermicomposting, mulching methods, and grasscycling or ways to reduce yard waste. There will be time for questions. Each participant will leave with a 12-foot roll of welded wire and a brochure that contains information covered in the class.

A Gluten-Free Bread Baking program will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will learn to make gluten-free and vegan bread from scratch. They will discover how to store, maintain, and care for gluten-free sourdough starter; create yeast-risen, gluten-free bread; and make no-rise flatbreads in under 30

minutes. All participants will leave with gluten-free sourdough starter and some freshly baked bread.

This class is suitable for anyone with gluten sensitivities who

wants to expand his or her baking repertoire. However, those with Celiac disease should note that the Horn Farm’s summer kitchen is not a gluten-free facility.

This year’s inductees are Jerry Afari, William Bowers, Jeanne Ryan, Frederick Sample, Nancy Stevens, and Steve Ward.

Afari attended Columbia High School, where he earned nine varsity letters. As a football standout, he was First Team All-Section in 2001 and 2002, and Section 3 Linebacker of the Year in 2003. He earned Third Team All-State in 2003 and finished his football career with 169 tackles, two interceptions, and three sacks.

On the wrestling mat, Afari competed for three years, compiling a record of 105-16 with 66 pins. He set a school record for takedowns in 2002 with 117. He was named Second Team All-American at NHSCA Duals, First Team All-League at 215 pounds, and Lancaster-Lebanon League and sectional champion in 2002 and 2003. Afari was the 215-lb. District 3 and regional champion and 215-lb. state runner-up in 2003.

Afari was awarded a wrestling scholarship to the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year starter and two-time team captain. He finished his collegiate career with 52 wins and a third-place finish at the ACC Conference Championship.

Afari was inducted into the Columbia High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

Bowers started his running career at McCaskey High School and matriculated at Millersville State College, where he earned four letters in track and three in cross-country. He earned school records in the 440-yard dash and 440-yard hurdles. Bowers had a distinguished career in both, where he won many dual meets and won a medal at the Penn Relays for the first time in Millersville school history. In his senior year, Bowers set a school record for the 440 dash and was the PSAC champion in the 440 hurdles, also setting a school record. His Millersville team won the PSAC Championships for the first time in school history and also went 9-0 during the dual meet season.

Bowers then proceeded to coach cross-country at Hempfield High School from 1972 to 2003 and girls’ track from 1976

to 1988 and 1998 to 2004. He also coached at Millersville State College from 1972 to 1975. In boys’ cross-country, he coached three District 3 Championship teams and had two teams that finished as PIAA state runners-up. He coached two girls’ cross-country teams to District 3 Championships. Bowers also started the girls’ cross-country program at Hempfield. He coached eight boys’ cross-country state champions and five girls’ state champions. He won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross-Country Coach of the Year award five times. His total dual meet record - including both track and cross-country - was 1115-187-2, for an 85.7% winning percentage. He also ran in AAU meets from 1970 to 1987.

He was inducted into the Hempfield High School Sports Hall of Fame as a coach, the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete, and the Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame. He received the George W. Kirchner Award for his contributions to sports in Lancaster County.

Ryan started swimming competitively at the age of 10 and dominated Lancaster’s summer swim leagues from 1965 through 1972. She set many records as a young swimmer. In 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970, she qualified for the National AAU Championships. In 1968, she placed second in the nation in 100-meter breaststroke and second in the 400-meter medley relay. At nationals in 1969, she placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke and third in the 400-meter medley relay. In 1970, her 400-meter freestyle relay team was ranked first in the country. Ryan won the 1970 Lancaster Aquatic Club Outstanding Swimmer award. She won the 200-meter breaststroke and placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Eastern Swim Championships in 1970. In 1971, Ryan was nationally ranked in her age group: first for 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 200-yard freestyle relay, and second for 50-yard freestyle. In the summer of 1972, she qualified for her 10th national championship and Olympic trials.

Ryan furthered her education at West Chester State College, where in 1973, her swim team won the national championship.

Sample graduated from Columbia High School in 1948 after earning 16 total letters in four sports. He participated in

football, basketball, baseball, and track, serving as co-captain of the football team.

In 1952, Sample graduated from Lebanon Valley College, where he played football. He served as co-captain in his senior season, and his team played in the final Bully Bowl in Tennessee.

Sample then pursued a career in education, starting as a teacher and advancing to administration. He served as a high school principal for two years, school district superintendent for 14 years, and college president for 16 years.

Stevens graduated from Manheim Central High School and matriculated at West Chester State College, where she captained the 1975 field hockey team that won the AIAW national championship. She then served as the assistant coach for field hockey and lacrosse at Penn State from 1977 to 1979, proceeding on to Franklin & Marshall to be the head coach for field hockey and lacrosse for two seasons. She was then the head field hockey coach for Northwestern University for nine seasons. Her Wildcats won four Big Ten Championships and appeared in eight consecutive NCAA Division I Championship quarterfinal and three NCAA semifinal games.

Stevens then took the helm at the University of Connecticut. Her UConn teams appeared in 24 NCAA tournaments and reached 18 quarterfinals and 10 NCAA semifinals. Her teams won 19 Big East tournament titles and 19 Big East regular season titles while producing 50 First-Team All-Americans. Stevens led the Huskies to a No. 1 ranking in five seasons. She won NFHCA National Coach of the Year three times and Big East Coach of the Year 13 times. She saw 11 of her former players play on the U.S. national team.

Stevens was part of the USA Field Hockey national coaching staff from 1982 to 1990. She has also coached in the U.S. developmental program and the Olympic Festival. She was inducted into the NFHCA Hall of Fame in 2007 and the West Chester University Hall of Fame in 2003. She received the West Chester University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018.

Ward was a three-sport athlete, graduating from Columbia High School in 1971. In his three years of varsity football, the Crimson Tide went 26-3-1. He was a versatile halfback as a

sophomore, with 514 receiving yards and 549 rushing yards. Ward became the varsity quarterback in the 1970 and 1971 seasons. Columbia went 10-0 during his junior season, and the Tide won the conference championship in 1971. During his senior season, Ward threw 18 touchdown passes and ran for seven more. He compiled 1,774 all-purpose yards that season. He was named First Team AllCounty and Honorable Mention All-State.

Ward was an All-County selection in basketball during his junior and senior seasons. He was an All-County selection in baseball as lead-off hitter and shortstop/third baseman during his sophomore and junior seasons.

He attended Franklin & Marshall College, where he played football during his freshman season and graduated in 1975. Ward then moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he coached and refereed football. For 18 years, he served as president and commissioner of the Blue Springs Football Association.
