Murder, mayhem and music in “Lucky Stiff”

Take some mistaken identities, millions of dollars and a wheelchair-bound corpse, and what do you get?

“Lucky Stiff,” a murder-mystery musical that will be performed by Columbia High School. The show will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, through Saturday, March 29, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on March 29. It will be performed in the high school auditorium, 901 Ironville Pike.

“This show is a mix between ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ and ‘Clue,’” shared senior Michael Unkow, who plays several parts in the show, including Mr. Loomis and the croupier. “It’s about a guy who finds out his uncle has passed away, and his uncle has left him $6 million in his will. But he only gets the money if he takes his uncle’s dead body around Monte Carlo for one last vacation.”

If Harry, the nephew, does not take the embalmed body of his uncle, Tony, with him for a variety of adventures Tony has preplanned, the inheritance will go to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn instead.

“There are a lot of moving parts to this show. It’s a very fastpaced comedy.”

“This is awful for Harry, because he hates dogs,” Michael said. “He really doesn’t want the money to go there. A representative from the dog home tails him, trying to get him to make a mistake so she can get the money.”

Zooey Minnick plays Annabel Glick, the dog home employee. Chaos ensues as she pursues Harry, played by Alexymahr

Whitley, and as additional quirky characters become involved in the plot.

“My character is a crazy lady, a New Jersey girl, who ... stole $6 million from her husband,” said Namara Foster, a senior who plays Rita LaPorta. “She’s the person who killed Tony, and she needs to get the money back, so she’s after his nephew, Harry.”

As cast member Samir Milligan explained, “There are a lot of moving parts to this show. It’s a very fast-paced comedy.”

Samir, a senior who plays multiple parts, including a lorry driver and a featured dancer, said the audiences can expect a lot of singing and a lot of dancing, with both music and dance in a variety of styles. Songs range from Broadway-style showstoppers to rock tunes, and dance numbers include a kick line, a waltz and a tango.

Inclusion is at the heart of an Easter egg hunt organized by the Kreutz Creek Valley VFW Post 7045.

The Eggceptional Egg Hunt, for people of all ages with special needs, will be held on Saturday, April 5. The event will begin at noon at the VFW, 341 Yorkana Road, Hallam.

“The idea for the special egg hunt specifically for people with special needs came up as a way to provide a safe and judgment-free environment for individuals with special needs to enjoy the Easter festivities,” explained Lisa Price.

“As the steward at the VFW and a parent of a 15-year-old special-needs son, I understand the importance of giving back and bringing our community together. It is about creating inclusive events where everyone can feel comfortable and be themselves. I wanted to provide a space where individuals with special needs could have an enjoyable and stress-free experience.”

Eastern York is a community rich in creativity and talent, and Kreutz Creek Library hopes to shine a light on that. The library will host “Meet Local Authors!” on Saturday, March 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will be held at the library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam.

Local authors participating in the program are Joshua Brandstadter, who writes children’s books; Janine Eaby, author of young adult fantasy

Price, who is coordinating the event with Kathy Paules, also a member of the VFW auxiliary,

books; Metro Sean Heller, who writes thrillers; M. J. McCluskey, who writes children’s books; Joan Patterson, who has written a memoir; Joshua Stauffer, author of middle-grade books; and John Verrico, who has written nonfiction self-help books. Each author will sign and sell copies of his or her books at the event, and vendors will sell book-related merchandise, said Jennifer Johnson, library manager. There will also be door prizes. All seven authors will be on-site for the duration

said the egg hunt will serve another purpose as well.

“Educating others and raising awareness about the unique needs of individuals with special needs was also a driving factor behind organizing this event,” she shared.

This is the second year for the event, which offers an opportunity for the community to come together to join in the fun.

Participants are encouraged to bring a basket or bag to collect eggs as they hunt, Paules said.

“We’ll have prizes in some of the eggs,” she stated. “We’re also having door prizes for the parents.”

The event will also feature crafts and treats, such as cupcakes and other snacks. The Easter Bunny will be on-site for pictures as well.

“This is a really fun event, and we all enjoy it,” Paules said, noting that the egg hunt reflects the mission of the VFW. “We are a very friendly place. We all act as one big family.”

year, including an Oyster Feed in February and Stars and Bars in August, featuring live music, food and vendors.

Last year’s egg hunt drew a crowd, and Price is hopeful this year’s installment will be even bigger.

“I would encourage individuals to come to this event because it is a unique and inclusive experience where they can participate in an Easter egg hunt tailored to their needs,” she said. “At our event, participants can expect a supportive and welcoming atmosphere where they can enjoy the festivities without any judgment. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends, have fun and celebrate Easter in a safe and understanding environment.”

No reservations are required for the Eggceptional Egg Hunt. Participants can just show up and join the fun. The rain date for the event will be Sunday, April 6.

Celebrate the season of Easter at St. John’s Episcopal Church when the church holds a pancake breakfast. The event will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta.

The meal will feature pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and special Easter treats. There will also be Easter egg painting for all children starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Easter Bunny will be on-site for pictures and will also hand out candy to all children age 12 and under.

“The breakfast is a great way to start the Easter season with the community,” said Nancy Kulman, church sec-

retary. “The members enjoy cooking and sharing with members of the community, especially the children. Our bunny loves being with the children, getting pictures with them and giving out candy. The children are also invited to color Easter eggs following their meal. It is a great time of fellowship and celebration of spring, new beginnings and Easter.”

Proceeds from the breakfast go back into the community, Kulman said, although organizers purposely keep the admission to the event low, with a goal of covering their costs. Any extra funds raised will benefit nonprofit organizations.

“Typically, we donate

“Several local authors had generously donated copies of their books to the library,” Johnson said. “I felt as though I could do more to promote them than just adding their titles to the collection. With the author meetand-greet event, I feel as though I am providing a platform for authors to showcase their work and for readers to learn about the amazing local homegrown talent. The library plays a unique role in this through its capacity to bring all these elements together.”

Four of the featured authors - Brandstadter, Stauffer, Heller and Eaby - created the agenda for the day.

“The authors wanted the event to be informal and low key, with the emphasis on meeting the authors, conversation and making connections with individual readers,” Johnson said.

This is the first time for this event at the library, and Johnson is optimistic about its success.

“We wanted to start small to gauge interest and then build on the event in future years,” she noted. “This is a community that reads, and this is a community that also supports its small businesses and charitable organizations. Most of these authors live, work and write in the local area. This is a chance for you to meet, get to know and support homegrown talent before they hit the big time!”

No registration is required for the event, and

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with the authors to plan the event,” Johnson shared. “I have learned so much from them about how to tailor the event to create the best experience for them and for their audience. My hope is that from this, we can create a mutually supportive community of writers and readers.”
